Book Outlines of the History of Education

Download or read book Outlines of the History of Education written by William B. Aspinwall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Education This little volume of studies has been prepared as a guide to the study of the History of Education for students in colleges and normal schools, with the hope that from out of the maze of facts and events which surround and obscure the subject, they may by its aid gain a clearer understanding of the development of educational thought and practices. Most books that deal with this broadest of historical subjects do not marshal the facts contributing to progress in education so that a definite tendency or purpose or result can be discerned. As a matter of value and profit, it is not so important to the student to know the facts as it is to know the bearing of the facts upon the movement, to understand their dependence upon what has gone before as well as upon the actual conditions surrounding them and to see their influence upon the development of the movement. We all know that any type of educational practice is but the outward expression of the thoughts and ideals and purposes which guide one generation in the rearing of the next, while these thoughts, ideals, and purposes are, in their turn, born of the national life and civilization in which they have matured. Now, it is always a difficult thing for the student to pick out the essential and contributing facts and to discover their meaning, and usually, working by himself, he either fails to get very much true significance from them or else he gets it at very great expense of thought and effort. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes and Outlines of Topics in the History of Education These notes and outlines are not published, but merely printed for use in the classes studying the History of Education in the Michigan State Normal School. It has been found that such outlines save much "note-taking," and much time otherwise occupied in giving references and suggestions. The references are confined, except in a very few cases, to works accessible to students in the library of the school. Occasionally additional references are given upon special topics as they may be found of advantage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Outline History of Education

Download or read book Outline History of Education written by Felix Arnold and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline History of Education An outline history of education or of any other subject should always be used in conjunction with original works or with a more discursive book on the same subject. No outline can take the place of a more extended treatise or of original works. The present outline is no exception to this rule. The student should read some books by Herbart, Pestalozzi, Froebel, Spencer, Comenius, Rousseau, Locke, Rabelais, or other writers. He should also read some good history of education of which there are now quite a few. Among others, the following suggestions might be of aid: I. Try to apply in the classroom as much of the educational theory and practice as possible. Much of what is given by Herbart, Froebel, Pestalozzi, Comenius, and others is still of great practical value. II. Organise the different suggestions given by any author and try to discover stages of development, interconnection, and interdependence. For example, show how the different topics treated under Herbart and the Herbartians develop naturally out of the Herbartian scheme of consciousness and ideas. III. Compare a series of educational works and show relationships. Find resemblances and differences. Take any topic and work it through a number of educational theories and practices. Compare, for example, the ideas of self-activity or of doing as presented by Froebel, Comenius, and Herbart. Compare the different aims of education of writers or teachers of the same period, or of different periods. Book The Oxford Handbook of the History of Education

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the History of Education written by John L. Rury and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-06-17 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook offers a global view of the historical development of educational institutions, systems of schooling, ideas about education, and educational experiences. Its 36 chapters consider changing scholarship in the field, examine nationally-oriented works by comparing themes and approaches, lend international perspective on a range of issues in education, and provide suggestions for further research and analysis. Like many other subfields of historical analysis, the history of education has been deeply affected by global processes of social and political change, especially since the 1960s. The handbook weighs the influence of various interpretive perspectives, including revisionist viewpoints, taking particular note of changes in the past half century. Contributors consider how schooling and other educational experiences have been shaped by the larger social and political context, and how these influences have affected the experiences of students, their families and the educators who have worked with them. The Handbook provides insight and perspective on a wide range of topics, including pre-modern education, colonialism and anti-colonial struggles, indigenous education, minority issues in education, comparative, international, and transnational education, childhood education, non-formal and informal education, and a range of other issues. Each contribution includes endnotes and a bibliography for readers interested in further study.

Book A Brief History of Schooling in the United States

Download or read book A Brief History of Schooling in the United States written by Edward Janak and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a sweeping overview of the historical and philosophical foundations of schooling in the United States. Beginning with education among the indigenous peoples of the Americas and going on to explore European models of schooling brought into the United States by European colonists, the author carefully traces the arc of educational reform through major episodes of the nation’s history. In doing so, Janak establishes links between schools, politics, and society to help readers understand the forces impacting educational policy from its earliest conception to the modern day. Chapters focus on the philosophical, political, and social concepts that shaped schooling of dominant and subcultures in the United States in each period. Far from being merely concerned with theoretical foundations, each chapter also presents a snapshot of the “nuts and bolts” of schooling during each period, examining issues such as pedagogical devices, physical plants, curricular decisions, and funding patterns.

Book Outlines of the History of Education

Download or read book Outlines of the History of Education written by W. D. Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Education: For Teachers' Training Classes and All Who Desire an Elementary Knowledge of the Subject When called upon to instruct a class in the history of education in a New York State training class, I could find no book covering all requirements in the subject by the Department of Public Instruction. I found many books which contain satisfactory information on many topics in the training class syllabus, while some topics could be found discussed in the largest encyclopedias, only. When the pupil prepared his lessons from these numerous and exhaustive treatises, he often wasted time by reading much not essential and often failed to understand what he read. After three years of careful reading, I have succeeded in compiling notes on the subject for my class. These notes were dictated to my last class. The final examination was readily passed. Believing from this experience and from the expressions of other teachers of training classes that these notes may be of service to other pupils, I venture to have the notes published. It is the wish of the author that this volume may be received in the spirit in which it is sent out. The book is intended to be a guide, only, to the study of the history of education. I find that a pupil comprehends a subject very much more easily and readily, if he begins the study of its outlines, such as this volume is intended to be on the History of Education.
