Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Primitive Belief Among the Indo-European Races There are two roads along which students are now travelling towards (we may reasonably hope) the same goal of fuller knowledge touching Prehistoric Belief. One way is that of Comparative Mythology, which has become so favourite a pursuit with the present generation. In this method the myth is taken for the centre-point of the enquiry, and - just as a specimen in natural history may be - it is traced through all the varieties and sub-species that are to be discovered in various lands. The other method, which is an historical rather than a scientific one, may be called the study of the History of Belief. In it our eyes are for the time being fixed upon a single race of men; and it is the relationship of these people to the world by which they are surrounded that we seek to know. The following outlines of early Aryan belief belong to the class of studies, which are distinctly historical in character. They are not designed to establish any new theory of the origin of belief among mankind; nor are they meant to deal with theories which relate to creeds other than the Indo-European. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of the Primitives My career as an African missionary, interrupted by a short sojourn in Europe and another in India, began in 1877 on the eastern coast. I brought with me all the current ideas as to the black populations: fetichist peoples, without religion or morality, with no family life, stupidly adoring animals, trees, and stones. Book The Aryan Race Its Origins and Its Achievements Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Aryan Race Its Origins and Its Achievements Classic Reprint written by Charles Morris and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aryan Race: Its Origins and Its Achievements Any attempt, indeed, to tell the story of the Aryan race, even in outline, during the recent age of mankind would be equivalent to an attempt to write the history of civilization, - which is far from our purpose. But in the comparison of the intellectual conditions and products of the several races of mankind, and in the consideration of the evolution of human institutions and lines of thought and action, we have a field of research which is by no means exhausted, and with which the general world of readers is very little con versant. Our work will therefore be found to be largely comparative in treatment, the characteristics and conditions of the other leading races of mankind being considered, and contrasted with those of the Aryan, with the purpose not only of clearly showing the general superiority of the latter, but also of point ing out the natural steps of evolution through which it emerged from original savagery and attained to its present intellectual supremacy and advanced stage of enlightenment. Book The Cradle of the Aryans Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cradle of the Aryans Classic Reprint written by Gerald H. Rendall and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cradle of the Aryans The following Essay is a paper originally communicated, necessarily in abridged form, to the members of the Liverpool Literary and Philosophical Society, and is an attempt to give a clear account of present controversies regarding the origin, local and racial, of the Aryan stock. It makes no claim to original discoveries in the field of language; but it embodies the results of somewhat extensive reading, mainly in German authorities; it gives a much fuller account than as yet exists in English of the latest Continental theories; and it presses some conclusions and inferences to what appears to me their legitimate issue, more closely than has been done by previous writers. I give it separate publication, thinking it may be of use to other students in the field of language. The better to fulfil this end, in the sections dealing with vocabulary I have systematically inserted in brackets some familiar representative of the term discussed; where this is not done, it is to be understood that the English word itself represents the stem in question. This, with the comparative tables introduced, will make it easy to check etymological statements, without uncertainty and loss of time. To gain compactness, I have refrained from not a few tempting digressions, and confined myself to categorical statement, with or without supporting reference in the notes.
