Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Old Testament Theology The position which is taken in the following chapters with regard to the composition and date of the Old Testament Books, as explained in the Introduction, is that which is generally adopted by Old Testament scholars at home and abroad. Among writers who are members of the Church of England the reader may be referred to Prof. Driver, in his works as cited in this d104-book (cf. especially p. 1); Prof. Sanday, Inspiration, Lectures iii.-v; Prof. Kirkpatrick, The Doctrine of the Prophets; Prof. Ryle, The Early Narratives of Genesis, etc.; Mr. Ottley, Aspects of the Old Testament: among Scottish writers to Prof. A. B. Davidson, the author of commentaries on Job and Ezekiel in the Cambridge Bible for Schools, etc.; and Prof. G. A. Smith, the author of commentaries on Isaiah and the Minor Prophets in The Expositor s Bible, and The Historical Geography of the Holy Land: and generally to the articles on Old Testament subjects in Dr. Hastings' Dictionary of the Bible. Among Roman Catholic churchmen who adopt the same position may be mentioned the Abbe Loisy, in Les Etudes Bibliques, and Baron F. Von Hugel, The Historical Method and the Documents of the Hexateuch, and The Church and the Bible (see Dublin Review, April and October, 1895). Further study of the Theology of the Old Testament may be made with great profit in Dr. Schultz's Old Testament Theology (English trans.1892), and in many of the articles in the new Dictionary of the Bible above mentioned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Studies: An Outline of Old Testament Theology The bible is a many-sided book, and it should be read and studied from many points of view. The truths which were conveyed through the centuries to God's ancient people, and which through them were intended to be conveyed to us, must be thoroughly and rightly grasped before they can be safely applied. This book is the brief development of a plan of Old Testament study which I have pursued for several years, and with great profit to myself. If any Bible student who has not already done so, should develop for himself this or some similar topical plan, neither could he fail to find it very beneficial, especially if it should be done in that spirit which should always characterize our study of the Word of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of New Testament Theology This Outline of New Testament Theology was originally prepared for the use of classes in the Hamilton Theological Seminary, and has been repeatedly used in the course of classroom work. It is now offered with diffidence to a wider circle, in the hope that it so summarizes the teachings of the New Testament as to be of some service to students of the Word of God. It will at once be noted that it claims to be only an outline. Consequently conclusions are often given without a statement of the reasons which have led to their acceptance, and all exegetical discussions have been rigidly excluded. This has been required by the condensation indispensable for classroom work, and no less by the author's conception of the scope of the science. Book Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament Classic Reprint written by John Walter Beardslee and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of an Introduction to the Old Testament These Outlines are the outgrowth of fifteen years of study and teaching. They are designed simply to indicate the lines along which study is demanded if one is to understand the teachings of the Old Testa ment. NO effort has been made to present an exhaust ive review of the ideas which have been advanced by others in regard to these remarkable books, or to give completeness to the views of the author. Only such points as seem necessary to a correct understanding of the text are presented and these are stated in the briefest form, with such references as may guide the way to further study. If the position here taken seem conservative, it is not because the writer has ignored the later criticism or underestimates its value, but because the newer ideas do not seem to be sufficiently established to demand the abandonment of the older. Great gain has already come from the learned and laborious investigations of the new school of criticism and we hope for still richer fruitage in the future, but the results thus far secured are too vague to become a satisfactory basis for the interpretation of Scripture. Book Old Testament Theology in Outline

Download or read book Old Testament Theology in Outline written by Walther Zimmerli and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1983-03-01 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period that the Old Testament came into being, Israel, from who whose world the documents contained in the Old Testament derive, underwent many changes, especially in its sociological structures. Such changes produce changes in liturgical life, resulting finally in the elimination of a multiplicity of sanctuaries and focusing on Jerusalem.Walther Zimmerli suggests that a presentation of Old Testament theology cannot close its eyes to all this movement and change. This classic study expertly outlines the essential religious structures and tensions of the Old Testament.

This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of New Testament History The present is a companion volume to the Outlines of Jewish History published some months ago. It deals with the historical data supplied by the inspired writings of the New Testament, in exactly the same manner as the pre ceding work did with the various events recorded in the sacred books of the Old Testament. In both volumes the writer has pursued the same purpose and followed the same methods. Both works have been prepared for the special use of theological students, not, however, without the hope that they may prove serviceable to a much larger number of readers, such as teachers of Bible history in Sunday-schools, colleges, academies, and the like. In neither volume has it been the aim of the writer to supply a substitute for the Bible itself, but rather a help towards a more careful perusal of the inspired record. With this purpose in view, he has set forth such results of modern investigation as may render the sacred narrative more intelligible and attractive. Many of the difficulties which are daily being raised on historical grounds are also touched upon, and the biblical student is supplied with constant references to further sources of in formation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theology of the Old Testament The book Of which this is a translation made its appear ance in 1886. It seems to have at first attracted little attention even in Europe, owing probably to the fact that it was written in French and published in Paris. Schultz, who mentions a smaller work by Kayser of the same date, had evidently overlooked this one, when, in 1888, he issued the last edition Of his Theologie. The book was first brought to the notice Of Americans by the Presbyterian Quarterly, in 1888. The review Of it then published was very favorable. In fact, the reviewer said of it: On the whole, we regard it as the best Theology of the Old Testa ment that has yet been published. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Old Testament History: Progressive Grade, With Written-Answer Questions for the Older Classes This Outline of Old Testament History has been prepared in the hope that it may be found useful in giving a clear conception of the progress of events connected with the history of the chosen people. One of the most important questions in the preparation of such an outline is whether the lessons shall be extended over two or more years, or be condensed into a single year. At first thought the larger number of lessons may seem preferable because they give time for a more careful study of details. But in outline study it is of the first importance not to dwell on details, for otherwise the outlines are lost in a maze of subordinate incidents. Such has been the experience of multitudes in the study of the Old Testament. The principal thing to be sought in such study is a comprehensive survey of the whole history, and the smaller the number of lessons in which this can be done the better. The details may be studied later as occasion arises. A careful analysis of Old Testament history shows that it can readily be treated in about forty topics, each repte senting a distinct forward step in the history. We regard it of primary importance that each of these topics or steps be covered by a single lesson and no more, so that the topic and its significance shall stand out clearly before the mind. These outlines have been arranged in accordance with this principle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
