Book excerpt: This is a short outline of Mormon doctrine written by one of the church's members. "Every person, whether consciously or not, gradually builds up, from his observations and reason, a system of philosophy by which he explains, to himself at least, the problems that the new experiences of his life present for solution. It is of great importance, therefore, that, instead of basing one's system of thought upon the contradictory hypotheses of speculative philosophy, we start right, so that our ideas on the questions of life may square with the truth as it is known to the Lord. And these considerations are the excuse for this work. This work is designed rather for study than for reading. To the hasty, illusioned reader, it will prove a short, dull book; but the studious reader, who can render a thought into experience, will find it a voluminous work, profusely illustrated with pictures such as no painter ever transferred to canvas; for to him, because of the nature of the subject, it will tell the whole beautiful story of life. The thanks of the author are due, most of all, to the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, for the helpful criticism of their committee of this work; and, next, to the scores of friends who have given him the benefit of their suggestions."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Book excerpt: Mormon Philosophy Simplified takes a readable approach to the foundational underpinnings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Accessible for members of the Church and non-members alike, this book takes classic questions in philosophy and provides responses based on the philosophical teachings of Joseph Smith, LDS scholars, and modern Mormon thinkers. There is a huge gap between the colorful world of Mormon academia and the average member, to the point that the two groups have difficulties engaging with one another. So while most books on Mormon thought rotate around complex Mormon history and require a high academic background, this book exists as a bridge allowing anyone the tools, background, context, detail, and permission to think deeply about the most existential questions we are all faced with. In Mormon culture, we find a sort of caricature of Mormon fundamentalism, but in Mormon thought, we find philosophical gems from the late teaching of Joseph Smith, expanded by the Pratt Brothers, and organized by scholars James E. Talmage and B.H. Roberts. Readers will enjoy exploring the depths of Mormon theology not addressed in modern-day manuals or press releases and will be surprised at what Mormonism has to offer when asking such questions as what is the nature of God, how powerful is God, when does life begin, why do things exist, why does evil exist, what is beauty, what is right and wrong and how can we distinguish between the two, how do we learn, what is the nature of the universe, what is the nature of eternal relationships, what is sin, how much free will we have, what is the nature of man, and other such questions that have kept man from proper sleep since the beginning of time. It outlines as simply as possible how Mormonism would respond if it were a student in a Philosophy 101 class. This book presents an entire philosophical system from top to bottom for anyone wanting to better understand the metaphysical foundation of Mormonism. The result is an invitation for all of us to evaluate our own personal philosophies and live an examined life worth living. Philosophy is a study of the good life, and we all need a little bit more good in our lives.

Unlike previous surveys of Latter-day Saint beliefs, Explaining Mormonism not only outlines Mormon doctrines but provides an in-depth exploration of some of their most distinctive doctrines regarding the nature of God, the purpose of life, the value of suffering, and even human sexuality. The author himself is a self-described "skeptic both by nature and by nurture," who nevertheless converted to Mormonism as a young man. He takes the reader on an exciting journey through one of the world's most controversial and perplexing religions. For Latter-day Saint readers, Explaining Mormonism will aid in strengthening their faith through its in-depth examination of the compelling logic behind the Mormon world view. For the skeptical outsider, it situates Mormon beliefs in a broad context of history, theology, philosophy, and social science and demonstrates Mormonism's ability to provide bold and compelling answers to the most fundamental questions of human existence. And for the serious student of Mormonism, it furnishes insights that only an insider can bring to some of the Latter-day Saints' most peculiar teachings.
