Book Outlines of Modern Chemistry Organic

Download or read book Outlines of Modern Chemistry Organic written by Charles Gilbert Wheeler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Modern Chemistry, Organic Organic chemistry has not as yet secured in American colleges sufficiently pronounced attention to create a demand for text-books of considerable size or extended scope. In these simple Outlines, therefore, no more has been attempted than this circumstance would appear to warrant. It is hoped that the necessary conciseness in method and form of expression has not resulted in any important sacrifice of perspicuity in thought or arrangement. It would have been easier to prepare a larger work. From the bewildering wealth of results afforded by the labors of investigators in this branch of science, the appropriate selection of that suited to the wants of students was by no means an easy task. It is assumed in these Outlines that those entering upon the study of Organic Chemistry have previously made themselves acquainted with Inorganic Chemistry as taught by some modern author, such as Miller or Barker, or have at least become familiar with the general principles of modern chemical philosophy. The author taking this for granted, has not, therefore, encumbered the work with a restatement of that which appertains to the theory of chemistry in general. Book Outlines of Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Outlines of Organic Chemistry written by F. J. Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Organic Chemistry: A Book Designed Especially for the General Student The present edition represents a thorough revision of the text in which, however, the original point of view has been strictly retained. The attempt has been made to have all statements accord strictly with the results of the latest and most reliable investigations, and the opportunity has been taken to introduce several topics of practical interest which had hitherto been omitted. Among these may be mentioned citric acid, the fulminates, the synthesis of india-rubber, and the chemistry of tannin. The chapter devoted to the compounds of cyanogen has been brought more nearly in accord with modern technical practice, and that dealing with stereoisomerism has been largely rewritten in the interest of clearness. The author desires to express his thanks to all those who have called attention to inaccuracies or loose statements in the first edition, and hopes that he may rely upon them for similar favors in the future. He is especially indebted to his colleague, Professor W. T. Hall, for valuable assistance in reading the proofs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wohler's Outlines of Organic Chemistry It is, therefore, natural that of late the attention of Americans should have been attracted towards this field; and there begin to be slight indications of a desire on their part to aid In clearing up its many mysteries, a work in which for some years the Ger mans have been engaged almost to the exclusion of the chemists of other countries. Should the publica tion of this work tend in the slightest degree to increase this desire, I shall feel that my labor has not been in vain. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wöhler's Outlines of Organic Chemistry In presenting this book to the American scientific public, I need only, as an excuse, refer to the success which it has met in Germany, as indicated by the appearance of eight editions in rapid sequence. The grounds of its success may, in part, be looked for in the fact that it is adapted as well to the use of beginners as to that of those advanced in the science. The beginner will find a simple principle of classification, carefully carried out, eminently fitted to his first object of obtaining a general view of the subject; the advanced will find it exceedingly rich in statements of facts with which he has constantly to deal. The year that has elapsed since the appearance of the last German edition, with its quota of investigations in this branch of science, has caused the necessity of a revision in order that the work might he equal to its avowed object. The additions and corrections have been made as nearly as possible in the spirit of the original, with the view merely of rendering the book a representative of the science at the date of publication.
