Download or read book Outlines of Missionary History Classic Reprint written by Alfred Dewitt Mason and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Missionary History There is, of course, a right place for these things. But while the interest of the child is child like, the mere interest of the adult is childish. Let us have interest in the Sunday school, but let us have passion in the Church, based upon some knowledge of its progress. We must expect from the Church more than interest in that work of re demption for which Christ endured the agony of a Gethsemane and the heartbreak of a Calvary. The Master went to His death amidst apparent failure and defeat, content to foresee the result of that travail of His soul which should satisfy. The work which was thus initiated by the pas sion of Christ can hardly be carried on only as it appeals to the interest of the Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Missionary History The voices that are coining out of the East with increasing frequency in these days are being listened to more than formerly and with distinct advantage to ourselves. They not only interpret to us the life and thought of other peoples, but they convey to us the careful observations of those who have gone out from amongst us upon the errands of God and of the Church and who have cast in their lot with those people. One of these latter has recently sent out with peculiar force an appeal to which this book is a distinct and somewhat unique response. The thought that thus comes to us and which should be given heed to with especial care at this time, is that, if the evangelization of the world is a truer conception of the duty of the Church than mere proselytism for its own sake, the conception of the Church's responsibility must deepen into something very much more than mere interest in foreign missions, and her efforts must be something more than the purely superficial attempts to keep up that interest by the spectacular attractions and displays which may momentarily arrest the eye, but can not so assuredly and permanently affect the heart. If missionary work has to depend upon the power of keeping up such an interest its day is past. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Christian Epoch Makers

Download or read book Christian Epoch Makers written by Henry C. Vedder and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Epoch-Makers: The Story of the Great Missionary Eras in the History of Christianity "There is a law of the imagination, forcing it to demand a concrete and personal center, around which (as a flint gathers around some organic substance in the chalk) its floating historical conceptions shall dispose themselves." These words, though they in no way suggested the writing of this book, not inaptly describe its organizing idea. The chapters following are the outgrowth of the author's experience in teaching the history of Christian missions to his classes for more than a dozen years. No method is so practically effective in arousing the student's interest and in helping him see the facts in their true perspective as the biographical. Many books already exist that tell the story of Christian missions, but none pursue this method. And yet the subject is one peculiarly fitted for biographical treatment - indeed, it cannot be treated in any other way without most inadequate presentation of the facts. It will occur to some readers, possibly, that other chapters ought to have been added on modern missionaries, the absence of whose names they will mark and deplore. But a little further consideration will make it plain that this would have been incompatible with the plan of the book. If one were attempting to give a complete history of missions, or even a fairly complete collection of missionary biographies, the omission of such names as Brainerd, Morrison, Paton, Neesima, would indeed be inexcusable. Book Missionary Sketches

Download or read book Missionary Sketches written by S. F. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missionary Sketches: A Concise, History of the Work of the American Baptist Missionary Union These sketches were suggested by my friend Rev. Dr. Bright, of New York, and appeared in successive months in "The Examiner and Chronicle." They were received with much favor, and I have been requested by many whose judgment I respect, to gather them together into their present form. Each chapter is of proper length to be read at one sitting, or at a missionary concert; and each gives a concise view of a single mission. Within so narrow a compass, it was impossible to embrace every name, or interesting incident, or succession of events, or important detail. The work aims to be only what its title implies. I have revised the Sketches, and continued them to the present date. I lay the little volume on the altar of missions, and dedicate it to Him, to whom, in due time, "every knee shall bow." Book Outline of Church History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outline of Church History Classic Reprint written by J. F. Hurst and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of Church History In the present edition of the Outline of Church History, an effort has been made to adapt it more fully to the needs of the student, of the teacher, and of the general reader, than were the former editions of the work. Some departments have been thoroughly changed. Dates, so far as they can be definitely or approximately known, have been assigned to the tables of the Church Fathers. The chapter in the first edition treating of the latest history of the Church has been canceled, and another, bringing down the history to the present year, has been substituted for it. The Survey of Missions has been entirely re-written, giving the latest progress in the foreign mission fields of the Church. An Index, which was not thought necessary in the first issue of the work, has been found, by the use of the volume, to be a real want, and has been supplied in the new edition. The first summary which we give below, the General Periods of Church History, should be carefully committed to memory, to serve as a framework for the entire structure of Church History. The student will then have in mind a general survey of all the periods, in historical order, with exact dates defining the general divisions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Missionary in Many Lands: A Series of Interesting, Sketches of Missionary Life and Labours, and of the Progress of the Gospel in Foreign Countries In the matter Of style there is not, possibly, that elaborateness or rigid precision and finish which scholars might desire but there is clearness and Simplicity, I trust, qualities quite as desirable in a book for general readers as any that might be named. In an experience, as a speaker to the young, of twenty years' standing, I have discovered that they prefer an incident or fact stated in sim ple, clear words, to one robed in beautiful drapery, or smothered with a profusion Of finely chosen or high sounding epithets. Download or read book Sketches From Church History for Mennonite Schools Classic Reprint written by Cornelius H. Wedel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches From Church History for Mennonite Schools The purpose of this little volume is to offer not what the pupil should hear in his classes, nor what the teacher should know, but what the former should learn and take with him from school and should use as a nucleus around which to gather further knowledge. Because of the fact that only a short time can be devoted to this study in school, it is self-evident that the amount of matter presented must be very limited. The teacher should let the class read each new paragraph and should explain such words and sentences as are not understood by the pupils. Then the pupils should close their books while the teacher enlarges upon the subject-matter of the text-book. This method will naturally arouse the interest of the pupils. The teacher, however, must guard against presenting too much outside matter. During the following recitation period he must expect the pupils to know what is given in the text-book. If they can give anything definite of what he added, they should be especially commended. It is scarcely necessary to warn against a discussion of the peculiarities distinguishing the various branches of our denomination. For that reason every occasion for such discussion has been avoided in this book. Short devotional meditations and applications are appropriate. They, however, will make deeper impressions if they are presented orally by the teacher instead of being read out of the text-book. We hope that this little volume will prove helpful in our schools.
