Affirmation is declaration of a relation between this and that; Negation is a declaration of non-relation. The statements are true according as they agree with the facts of the case. 5. The phrase Not-man is not a name; nor is there any existing name by which we can call it, for it is neither a sentence nor a negation. Let it pass as an Indefinite name, for it can be ranked equally well under either Being or Not-being. Every affirmation or negation will be made up of a name and a verb, or of an indefinite name and a verb: for without a verb there can be neither affirmation nor negation. 6. Of terms, some are General, others Singular. By the former I mean such as can be predicated of many subjects; by the latter, such as cannot; e.g., we place man among general terms, Kallias among singular. A Proposition is a sentence affirming or denying one thing of another. It may be either Universal, Particular, or Indefinite. By Universal, I mean a proposition which asserts something of all or none of its subject; by Particular, one which asserts or denies something of some or not all of the subject; by Indefinite, one which makes an assertion without specifying whether it is universal or particular, as were one to say that the same science deals with opposites, or that pleasure is not a good. The two main views of language, that it describes the world, and that it expresses thought, are not directly applicable to questions. Ques tions are not assertions. A question may be apt, sharp, to the point, impor tant, or it may be inappropriate, ambiguous, awkward, irrelevant or irreverent. But it cannot be true or false. It does not have a truth value not just because an utterance like Was the letter long? does not indicate which letter is being talked about. The indicative The letter was not long has the same indeter minacy. In actual context the anaphoric definite article will be resolved both for a question and for an indicative sentence. Contextual resolutions are easily found for most cross-references. A question cannot be either true or it does not describe a state of affairs. Neither does it express false, because thought, because it is an expression of suspended thought, of lack of judge ment. To dress it in other philosophical styles, a question is not a judgment, it is not a proposition, it is not an assertion. A philosopher may try to paraphrase a question as an indicative sentence, for instance as a statement of ignorance, or as a statement of the desire to know. Hintikka, Wachowicz and Lang explore this territory. Or he may interpret it as a meta statement intimating the direction in which the flow of the discourse is going.

Book excerpt: This book offers a new and original hypothesis on the origin of modal ontology, whose roots can be traced back to the mathematical debate about incommensurable magnitudes, which forms the implicit background for Plato’s later dialogues and culminates in the definition of being as dynamis in the Sophist. Incommensurable magnitudes – also called dynameis by Theaetetus – are presented as the solution to the problem of non-being and serve as the cornerstone for a philosophy of difference and becoming. This shift also marks the passage to another form of rationality – one not of the measure, but of the mediation. The book argues that the ontology and the rationality which arise out of the discovery of incommensurable constitutes a thread that runs through the entire history of philosophy, one that leads to Kantian transcendentalism and to the philosophies derived from it, such as Hegelianism and philosophical hermeneutics. Readers discover an insightful exchange with some of the most important issues in philosophy, newly reconsidered from the point of view of an ontology of the incommensurable.
