Book Lectures on the History of Moral and Political Philosophy

Download or read book Lectures on the History of Moral and Political Philosophy written by Jonathan Wolff and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-27 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previously unpublished writings from one of the most important political philosophers of recent times G. A. Cohen was one of the leading political philosophers of recent times. He first came to wide attention in 1978 with the prize-winning book Karl Marx's Theory of History: A Defence. In subsequent decades his published writings largely turned away from the history of philosophy, focusing instead on equality, freedom, and justice. However, throughout his career he regularly lectured on a wide range of moral and political philosophers of the past. This volume collects these previously unpublished lectures. Starting with a chapter centered on Plato, but also discussing the pre-Socratics as well as Aristotle, the book moves to social contract theory as discussed by Hobbes, Locke, and Hume, and then continues with chapters on Kant, Hegel, and Nietzsche. The book also contains some previously published but uncollected papers on Marx, Hobbes, and Kant, among other figures. The collection concludes with a memoir of Cohen written by the volume editor, Jonathan Wolff, who was a student of Cohen's. A hallmark of the lectures is Cohen's engagement with the thinkers he discusses. Rather than simply trying to render their thought accessible to the modern reader, he tests whether their arguments and positions are clear, sound, and free from contradiction. Throughout, he homes in on central issues and provides fresh approaches to the philosophers he examines. Ultimately, these lectures teach us not only about some of the great thinkers in the history of moral and political philosophy, but also about one of the great thinkers of our time: Cohen himself.

Book First Outline of a System of the Philosophy of Nature

Download or read book First Outline of a System of the Philosophy of Nature written by F. W. J. Schelling and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appearing here in English for the first time, this is F. W. J. Schelling's vital document of the attempts of German Idealism and Romanticism to recover a deeper relationship between humanity and nature and to overcome the separation between mind and matter induced by the modern reductivist program. Written in 1799 and building upon his earlier work, First Outline of a System of the Philosophy of Nature provides the most inclusive exposition of Schelling's philosophy of the natural world. He presents a startlingly contemporary model of an expanding and contracting universe; a unified theory of electricity, gravity magnetism, and chemical forces; and, perhaps most importantly, a conception of nature as a living and organic whole.

Book Outlines of the Philosophy of Right

Download or read book Outlines of the Philosophy of Right written by G. W. F. Hegel and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-07-10 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is rational is actual and what is actual is rational. Hegel's Outlines of the Philosophy of Right is one of the greatest works of moral, social, and political philosophy. It contains significant ideas on justice, moral responsibility, family life, economic activity, and the political structure of the state - all matters of profound interest to us today. Hegel's aim is to lay out the various forms that human freedom must take on, if it is to be true freedom. He seeks to show that genuine human freedom does not consist in doing whatever we please, but involves living with others in accordance with publicly recognized rights and laws. Hegel demonstrates that institutions such as the family and the state provide the context in which individuals can flourish and enjoy full freedom. He also demonstrates that misunderstanding the true nature of freedom can lead to crime, evil, and poverty. His penetrating analysis of the causes of poverty in modern civil society was to be a great influence on Karl Marx. Hegel's study remains one of the most subtle and perceptive accounts of freedom that we possess. This new edition combines a revised translation with a cogent introduction to his work. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Book Nineteen Lectures on Chinese Philosophy

Download or read book Nineteen Lectures on Chinese Philosophy written by Zongsan Mou and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese philosophy is often dismissed as either too underdeveloped or too mystical in comparison to the well-developed philosophies of the West. However, Mou Zongsan, arguably the most important Chinese philosopher of the twentieth century, devoted the majority of his more than sixty-year career to establishing and fostering a dialogue between Western and Eastern philosophy. To achieve this, he produced volumes of original work that detailed how Chinese philosophy addresses many of the same universal issues as Western philosophy and how, when combined with Western thought, it has much to contribute toward producing a universal value system. In 1978, Mou Zongsan delivered a series of lectures to graduate students outlining his unique East-West comparative approach. Published in Chinese in 1983, the transcription of those lectures has been a primary resource for learning about Chinese philosophy. In Nineteen Lectures on Chinese Philosophy, these public addresses are presented in English for the very first time. Rigorously researched and cross-referenced with Mou's previous works, this meticulous translation also includes synopses and key concepts that further enhance this essential resource for anyone interested in a deeper study of Chinese philosophy.

Download or read book History and Freedom written by Theodor W. Adorno and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite all of humanity's failures, futile efforts and wrong turnings in the past, Adorno did not let himself be persuaded that we are doomed to suffer a bleak future for ever. One of the factors that prevented him from identifying a definitive plan for the future course of history was his feelings of solidarity with the victims and losers. As for the future, the course of events was to remain open-ended; instead of finality, he remained committed to a Hölderlin-like openness. This trace of the messianic has what he called the colour of the concrete as opposed to mere abstract possibility. Early in the 1960s Adorno gave four courses of lectures on the road leading to Negative Dialectics, his magnum opus of 1966. The second of these was concerned with the topics of history and freedom. In terms of content, these lectures represented an early version of the chapters in Negative Dialectics devoted to Kant and Hegel. In formal terms, these were improvised lectures that permit us to glimpse a philosophical work in progress. The text published here gives us an overview of all the themes and motifs of Adorno's philosophy of history: the key notion of the domination of nature, his criticism of the existentialist concept of a historicity without history and, finally, his opposition to the traditional idea of truth as something permanent, unchanging and ahistorical.
