Book Handbook of Mental Examination Methods

Download or read book Handbook of Mental Examination Methods written by Shepherd Ivory Franz and published by . This book was released on 1919 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The present work is the direct outcome of a series of lectures and demonstrations of neurological and mental examination methods which the author gave in a course to the interns of the Government Hospital for the Insane, first in 1910 and which has been repeated in subsequent years. It is also partly due to repeated suggestions that the scheme of examination published in the first edition of White's "Outlines of Psychiatry" (Chapter 7) be elaborated. The book is intended to place in the hands of psychiatrists, neurologists and students methods of examination which have been successfully used in psychological practice, to the end that the mental examination of patients may be conducted in a more systematic and scientific manner. An endeavor has been made to select methods which not only serve to show certain phases of mental processes, but which at the same time are easy to perform and are sufficiently accurate for certain kinds of research as well as for routine clinical purposes. All the methods which are described have been successfully used by the author from time to time, but it must not be assumed that each and every test may or must be applied to each and every patient who is to be examined. Alternative methods are often given because the author has found that one method can not be used with advantage with all kinds of patients"--Preface.

Book excerpt: The transition from young layman aspiring to be a physician to the young physician skilled in technique and confident in his dealings with patients is slow and halting. To study medicine is generally rated one of the major educational ordeals of American youth. The difficulty of this process and how medical students feel about their training, their doctor-teachers, and the profession they are entering is the target of this study. Now regarded as a classic, Boys in White is of vital interest to medical educators and sociologists. By daily interviews and observations in classes, wards, laboratories, and operating theaters, the team of sociologists who carried out this firsthand research have not only captured the worries, cynicism, and basic idealism of medical students—they have also documented many other realities of medical education in relation to society. With some sixty tables and illustrations, the book is a major experiment in analyzing and presenting qualitative data.

Book An Outline of Abnormal Psychology

Download or read book An Outline of Abnormal Psychology written by William McDougall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1926, a complement to the author’s Outline of Psychology, this book surveys the field of neurotic and mental disorders in so far as they are not due to gross organic lesions. It discusses this principal types of mental process that are abnormal or disorderly in the sense that they are departures from the fully waking processes of the normal mind, seeking to understand them in terms of the general principles laid down in the earlier volume. Sleep, the influence of drugs and suggestion, conflict and repression, automatisms and somnambulisms, morbid fears, obsessions and impulsions, perversions, delusions, exaltation and depression, multiple personalities, psycho-therapy, and the schools of abnormal psychology – these and many others are the topics discussed from the point of view, not of medical practice, but of psychological theory. A book, not for the medical expert only, but for every man or woman interested in the riddle of human personality.
