Download or read book Outlines of Introduction to the Hebrew Bible Classic Reprint written by Alfred; S. Geden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Introduction to the Hebrew Bible The following chapters have formed substantially the groundwork of basis of a series of lectures introductory to the study of the Old Testament, which for several years past have been delivered at the Wesleyan College, Richmond. I have ventured to dedicate them accordingly to my fellow-students, past and present, to some of whom, I would fain trust, the memory of studies pursued in common may prove as pleasant as it has often been to me. It has been my aim throughout rather to stimulate and suggest, than ex cathedra to instruct; and I have been led to publish in the hope that others also, students in a broader field, may find herein interest and aid. That the lectures make no pretension to exhaustiveness, on a theme amongst the most enravelled that the human mind can essay to resolve, will be patent to all. In every instance, however, I have sought to indicate lines of profitable or necessary research, and of set purpose have refrained from attempting to discuss details or to present and criticise the varying conclusions and results of many minds. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John J. Collins's Introduction to the Hebrew Bible> is one of the most reliable and widely adopted critical textbooks at undergraduate and graduate levels alike, and for good reason. Enriched by decades of classroom teaching, it is aimed explicitly at motivated students, regardless of their previous exposure to the Bible or faith commitments. The approach is ecumenical, in the sense that it seeks not to impose any particular theological perspective but to provide information and raise questions that should be relevant to any student. Collins proceeds through the canon of the Old Testament and the Apocrypha, judiciously presenting the current state of historical, archaeological, and literary understanding of the biblical text, and engaging the student in questions of significance and interpretation for the contemporary world. The third edition is presented in a new and engaging format with new maps and images. An index has been added to the volume for the first time.
