Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Human Physiology: Designed for the Use of the Higher Classes in Common Schools It is hardly necessary to add, that this little work makes no claims to originality. It has been compiled with some degree of care from the best authorities on the subject, and the materials, which the labor and re search of others have collected, have been freely em ployed. The compiler fears that it is by no means free from errors he is aware that he could not bring to the task all the knowledge of the subject that was de sirable, and he executed it while engaged to some ex tent in the active duties of a responsible profession. He was induced to undertake it, in the hope that it might be useful to the young; and his object will be effected, if it should open to them a new and interest esting branch of knowledge. He was desirous that they should become acquainted with human physiology, as he felt confident, that they could not fail to see in the structure and functions of their own bodies, the clearest evidence of wonderful contrivance and benefi cent wisdom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of a Course of Lectures on Human Physiology This little book contains an outline of two short Courses of Lectures on Human Physiology delivered to many thousands of persons at large towns in the North of England and the Midlands, and also in the Metropolis. It embodies an attempt I have made to excite an interest in, and give some sound elementary knowledge of, a branch of science which surpasses all others in its practical bearing upon the maintenance and improvement of the health of the community. It is not intended as a text-book, but as an adjunct to the Lecture-room Although written chiefly to help the -numerous students who attend my own Lectures, it may also possibly prove of service to medical and other students who are engaged in attending Lectures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Physiology: In Its Relations to Man The use Of a text-book appropriate to his course may also enable a teacher to develope to a greater extent an effective method of communicating and of testing knowledge. This, will be accomplished: (l) by a clear and concise statement of facts; (2) by the experimental demonstration, as far as possible, of these facts 5 and (3) by frequent oral examination of the students individually. Two features of this book require a word of explanation (l) I have avoided the discussion of minute anatomical and histological details, because I regard this as belonging more especially to the province of anatomy. Granting that there is What is termed Physiological Anatomy, it must be evident to all that physiology, as a distinctive subject, is now so largely concerned in the application of physical and chemical truths to the phenomena of the living organism, as to make it desirable to give over to the sister science the description of arrangements of tissues, organs, and of Systems which suggest function. At the same time, wherever it was neces sary to allude to structure for the intelligent comprehension of function, I have not hesitated to do so.
