One who wants to get joy of book reading especially in very less time can go for it. About The Book Sir John Frederick William Herschel, only child-and, as an astronomer, almost the only rival-of Sir William Herschel, was born at Slough, in Ireland, on March 7, 1792. At first privately educated, in 1813 he graduated from St. John's College, Cambridge, as senior wrangler and first Smith's prizeman. He chose the law as his profession; but in 1816 reported that, under his father's direction, he was going "to take up stargazing." He then began a re-examination of his father's double stars. In 1825 he wrote that he was going to take nebulae under his especial charge. He embarked in 1833 with his family for the Cape; and his work at Feldhausen, six miles from Cape Town, marked the beginning of southern sidereal astronomy. The result of his four years' work there was published in 1847. From 1855 he devoted himself at Collingwood to the collection and revival of his father's and his own labours. His "Outlines of Astronomy," published in 1849, and founded on an earlier "Treatise on Astronomy" of 1833, was an outstanding success. Herschel's long and happy life, every day of which added its share to his scientific services, came to an end on May 11, 1871. For more eBooks visit www.kartindo.co

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Astronomy If proof were wanted of the inexhaustible fertility of astro nomical science in points of novelty and interest, it would suffice to adduce the addition to the list of members of our system of no less than eight new planets and satellites during the prepara tion of these sheets for the press. Among them is one whose discovery must ever be regarded as one of the noblest triumphs of theory. In the account here given of this discovery, I trust to have expressed myself with complete impartiality; and in the exposition of the perturbative action on Uranus, by which the existence and situation of the disturbing planet became revealed to us, I have endeavoured, in pursuance of the general plan of this work, rather to exhibit a rational view of the dynamical action, than to convey the slightest idea of the conduct of those masterpieces of analytical skill which the researches of Messrs. Leverrier and Adams exhibit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Review: Outlines of Astronomy The introduction is reprinted with but slight change from the former work. It is a beautiful chapter, clear and con cise, informing beginners in astronomy what they have a right to, expect from an elementary work on this science. Its utmost pretension, says Herschel, is to place them on the threshold of this particular wing of the temple of Science, or rather on an eminence exterior to it, whence they may obtain something like a general notion of its structure or, at most, to give those, who may wish to enter, a ground-plan of its accesses, and put them in possession of the password. Admission to its sanctuary, and to the privileges and feelings of a votary, is only to be gained by one means, - sound and suflicient knowledge of mathematics, the great instrument of all exact inquiry, without which no man can ever make such advances in this or any other of the higher departments of science, as can entitle him to form an independent opinion on any subject of discussion within their range. It is not without an effort that those who possess this knowledge can communicate on such subjects with those who do not, and adapt their language and their illustrations to the necessities of such an intercourse. Propositions which to the one are almost identical are theorems of import and difficulty to the other; nor is their evidence presented in the same way to the mind of each. The book is divided into four parts. The first comprises more than half the volume, and treats of spherical astronomy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Astronomy, Vol. 1 The method, therefore, we propose to follow is neither strictly the analytic nor the synthetic, but rather such a combination of both, with a leaning to the latter, as may best suit with a didactic composition. Our object is not to convince or refute Opponents, nor to inquire, under the semblance of an assumed ignorance, for prin ciples of which we are all the time in full possession but simply to teach what we know. The moderate limit of a single volume, and the necessity of being on every point, within that limit, rather diffuse and copious in ex planation, as well as the eminently matured and asoer tained character of the science itself, render this course both practicable and eligible. Practicable, because there is now no danger of any revolution in astronomy, like those which are daily changing the features of the less advanced sciences, supervening, to destroy all our hypo-3 theses, and throw our statements into confusion. Eligible, because the space to be bestowed, either in combating refuted systems, or in leading the reader forward by slow and measured steps from the known to the un known, maybe more advantageously devoted to such ex planatory illustrations as Will impress on him a familiar and, as it were, a practical sense of the sequence of phe momena, and the manner in which they are produced. \ve shall not, then. I'gjgci. The analytic course where it leads more easily and directly to our Obje0ts, or in any way fetter ourselves by a rigid adherence to method. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SIR JOHN F. W. HERSCHEL PART ONE NEW YORK F. COLLIER SON M C M I I SCIENCE SIR JOHN HERSCHEL SIB JOHN FREDEBICK WILLIAM HERSCHEL, BART., tlie illustrious astronomer, was the only son of Sir JB William Herschel. He was born at Slough, Bucking hamshire, England, in the year 1792. His scholastic education began at Eton, whence, at the age of seven teen, he was sent to St. Johns College, Cambridge, where he attained to great eminence in mathematics. After leaving the University, he entered upon the study of astronomy, and in 1820, assisted by his father, com pleted a mirror of 18 inches diameter and 20 feet focal length for a reflecting telescope. This, as subsequently improved, became the instrument which enabled hirn to effect the astronomical observations that formed the basis of his fame. In 1821-28 he undertook the re-examina tion of his fathers double stars. For this work he re ceived in 1826 the gold medal of the Astronomical So ciety, and the Lalande Medal of the French Institute. From 1824 to 1827 he was Secretary o the Eoyal So ciety, and in 1827 was elected to the Chair of the As tronomical Society, which office he filled on two subse quent occasions. In 1831 the honor of knighthood was conferred on him by William IV., and he subsequently 3 4 SIB JOHN HERSCHEL was made a baronet. His exploration of the southern heavens constituted an epoch in astronomy, and secured for him the distinction of memberships in almost every important society in both hemispheres. His Outlines of Astronomy, 7 here reproduced, first appeared in 1849, and, notwithstanding the disadvantage arising from the practice of stereotyping text-books which relate to pro gressive sciences, there is no more instructive volume extant on the subject of which it treats. Sir John Her schel died in 1871 his remains are interred in West minster Abbey, close to the grave of Sir Isaac Newton. Book A Synopsis of the Elements of Astronomy and a Description of the Celestial Indicator

Download or read book A Synopsis of the Elements of Astronomy and a Description of the Celestial Indicator written by Henry Bryant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Synopsis of the Elements of Astronomy, and a Description of the Celestial Indicator: Written to Accompany the Apparatus, by the Inventor Astronomy is the science which teaches the knowledge of the stars; a study that has at once the beauty of poetry, and the exactness of Geometry. Te look in all directions, on a clear evening, and we see a multitude of stars; were we to remain out all night, we should continue to see them coming up in the east, and going down in the west, until the dawn of morning obscured them from our sight. The sun rises; it is but a star, like those seen in the night and were it as far away from us as the other stars, we should continue to see stars all the time under a clear sky; but, being comparatively near us, it looks large and gives us a flood of light. That makes our day. Its distance is but miles, and its light but eight minutes in reaching us, while the light from the next near est fixed star, at Centauri, is more than three years in reaching us; and the light from some of the remoter fixed stars, that are seen with telescopes, would require a hund red thousand years to travel to us; yet their light is here, and the Beyond - a boundless space - yet filled with stars. We live among the stars and amidst star-systems; yet we see less than with our unaided vision; with the telescope, more than twenty millions. But now we will confine our description to one star, and its planets moving eastward around it. To us it is a sun.
