Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Second Edition of 21st Century Astronomy reaffirms its status as the most current and authoritative text for introductory courses. Written by a team of specialists who are also experienced teachers, this accessible text fosters scientific literacy by relating core concepts in modern astronomy to the real-world process of science. Retaining the lively prose and narrative style of the previous edition, the text now offers improved pedagogy, an expanded art program, and dynamic new multimedia tools for students and instructors. The text is also now available in a comprehensive one-volume edition, a flexible ebook format, or two separate volumes, one focusing on the solar system and the other focusing on stars and galaxies. Highlights The most up-to-date and authoritative introductory text. With six experienced teachers on the author team, each specializing in a different area of astronomy, 21st Century Astronomy continues to provide the most current and authoritative coverage in the field. Among other recent discoveries, the Second Edition includes coverage of 2003 UB313 and the many recently documented extrasolar bodies. Fosters scientific literacy by emphasizing the scientific process. 21st Century Astronomy enables students to grasp the core concepts of modern astronomy by emphasizing the scientific process through which astronomers make observations and interpret their findings. Integrated throughout, this emphasis shows students how scientific principles are developed through the trial-and-error process of discovery and research. Expanded art program and pedagogy reinforce core concepts. 21st Century Astronomy's acclaimed four-color art program has been expanded for the Second Edition, with over 150 new photographs and figures. The Second Edition also offers improved pedagogical features: Annotated figures offer visual cues to help students focus on the essential principles being conveyed. Key Concepts boxes at the beginning of each chapter call attention to important topics, while new end-of-chapter Summaries reinforce these topics. Key Idea statements, throughout each chapter, draw students' attention to important concepts as they read. Seeing the Forest Through the Trees sections conclude each chapter by linking the chapter's key concepts to the larger themes. Review Questions at the end of each chapter have been expanded, and Key Term lists have been added. Inviting narrative style emphasizes the dynamic "story" of science and modern astronomy. Avoiding the dry, encyclopedic style of other texts, 21st Century Astronomy engages students by focusing on the dynamic narratives of scientific discovery. Each chapter presents theories and concepts by telling their "story": explaining how and when they were developed, how they are related to fundamental scientific principles, and how they are connected to other astronomical theories and concepts covered in the text. New multimedia tools for instructors and students. The Second Edition features an exceptional multimedia program, including the SmartWork homework management system to help students review and hone their math skills, an extensive student website (StudySpace) for reviewing important concepts, a brand-new set of interactive animations, and the Starry Night Enthusiast 5.0 CD-ROM and Workbook. Instructors will have access to full-color lecture presentations, test banks, course cartridges for WebCT and BlackBoard, and more.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ROSAT Observations G. HASINGER Max-Planck-Institut flir extraterrestrische Physik, D-85740 Garching, Germany Abstract. This review describes the most recent advances in the study of the extragalactic soft X-ray background and what we can learn about its constituents. The deepest pointed observations with the ROSAT PSPC are discussed. The logN-logS relation is presented, which reaches to the faintest X-ray fluxes and to the highest AGN surface densities ever achieved. The N(>S) relation shows a 2 density in excess of 400 deg- at the faintest fluxes and a flattening below the Einstein Deep Survey limit. About 60% of the extragalactic background has been resolved in the deepest field. Detailed source spectra and first optical and radio identifications will be discussed. The results are put into perspective of the higher energy X -ray background. Key words: X-rays, background radiations, active galactic nuclei. 1. Introduction The extragalactic X-ray background (XRB), discovered about 30 years ago, has been studied extensively with many X-ray experiments, in particular with the satel lites HEAO I and II (see ego Boldt 1987) and with ROSAT (e. g. Hasinger et aI. , 1993). Figure 1 shows a compilation of some of the most recent spectral measure ments for the X-ray background. Over the energy range from 3 to about 100 keY its spectrum can be well approximated by an optically thin thermal bremsstrahlung model with kT ~ 40 keY, while at lower X-ray energies a steepening into a new component has been observed observed (e. g.

Book excerpt: It is the customary practice to report the major events of a General Assembly -the Invited Discourses, Joint Discussions and Joint Commission Meetings in Highlights of Astronomy. Vol. 8 reports the highlights of the XXth General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union, 1988 August 2-11, Baltimore, USA. The present volume contains the 3 Invited Discourses and papers presented at 7 Joint Discussion Meetings and 6 Joint Commission Meetings. Two Joint Commission Meetings will be reported elsewhere -JCM5 Spectroscopy of Individual Stars in Globular Clusters and the Early Chemical Evolution of our Galaxy (in summary only here, published by the Imprimerie de l'Observatoire de Paris) and JCM7 Star Clusters in the Magellanic Clouds (see Transactions of the IAU, Vol.XXB, report of Commission 37). I am most grateful to the authors of the invited discourses R.M. West and V.I. Moroz, M. Schmidt and M. Rees for sending me the manuscripts so promptly. I am also indebted to the Chairmen of the Joint Discussion and Joint Commission Meetings for their organisation of the meetings and for the assembly of their material for publication. Unfortunately the deadline for receipt of manuscripts coincided with an extended postal strike in France which seriously hindered the preparation of the volume for publication.
