Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of the Kingdom of God A satisfactory treatment would require many months of closet application and an entire volume for the presentation of the evidence. In spite of the comparative length of the chapter, he does not pretend to have treated the subject in any exhaustive way. Indeed, this may be said with equal truth of the whole book. Rather than a minute examination of the facts, he has sought to take a bird's-eye view of the outstanding features, the more conspicuous movements and growth of Christianity. The primary purpose, the Japanese audience, and the practical, rather than the theoretical interest and aim of the book, will thus account for certain of its features, which, if produced under different circumstances, it might not have had. Its value, however, may possibly be increased rather than diminished by these factors and features. His indebtedness to various writers and his sources of information are sufficiently indicated in the course of the successive chapters. His thanks are due to personal friends and kindred who have rendered very material assistance in the forms of stimulus, suggestions, and correction of the manuscript. The defects incident to the attempt to cover so much ground in a single brief work, none realise more than the author. Among such a mass of statistics, errors are inevitable. None will be more glad than the writer to have such pointed out and corrected. That this volume may find its niche of usefulness, and may help onward the growth of the Kingdom, is the one desire of its author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kingdom of God: Studies From the View-Point of "Our Father" About twenty years ago the author conceived the idea that there must be a theory of religion (which is only another name for. A true life) that will commend itself to the judgment, and receive the approval, of every candid, reasonable Bible student - a theory on which all Christians can and will conscientiously unite. To suppose the contrary is to impeach both the wisdom and goodness of the omniscient and most loving of all fathers. Since He gave us the Bible as a revelation of truth, both respecting Himself and our relations to Him and to one another, and the duties that grow out of those relations, on its pages such a theory must be found. We must remember, however, that the Bible is what the inspiring, Spirit intended to teach; not what sectarian bigots have claimed to find there. It is time to recognize that its solution lies not in bio logical analogies, not in the exaltation of the State at the expense of the individual, nor again in the destruction of government, but in that gospel of the Kingdom of God which means the realization of certain ideals at once through social relations and through the highest and fullest development of personality. Book The Kingdom of God Or Reign of Heaven Among Men Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Kingdom of God Or Reign of Heaven Among Men Classic Reprint written by Francis Asa Wight and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kingdom of God, or Reign of Heaven Among Men The law in hermeneutics The Unity of Truth has been fully recognised and it is the greatest joy to see all Scripture, whether in the Old or New Testament, that bears upon this theme brought into complete harmony. Every verse has been given its most obvious meaning; for most certainly the Lord knows how to express truth in the clearest way and He means what He says, and says exactly what He desired to say; and all twisting or strain ing of the Scriptures is insulting to God. Beware of the commentator who magnifies obscure truths, putting them in a place of great promlnence. God's light is not put under a bushel waiting for some visionary to lift it Off. AS it is absolutely necessary for a surveyor to find first his beginning corner before he runs his lines, so it is just as essential for a student to find the beginning of God's kingdom, that John and Jesus proclaimed to be at hand, before he can understand the purpose, nature or place of the kingdom of God in the earth. Book The Kingdom and the Messiah Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Kingdom and the Messiah Classic Reprint written by E. F. Scott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kingdom and the Messiah It has long been recognised that the message of Jesus was related, in some of its aspects, to apocalyptic Judaism. The closeness of this relation has become ever more apparent as we have advanced to a larger knowledge of the surviving Jewish literature. Criticism is gradually settling towards the conviction that the apocalyptic element is not merely accidental to our Lords teaching, but is all-pervading and determinative. The discovery is still so recent that there is a tendency on all hands to exaggerate its significance. Conservative and radical thinkers alike have eagerly laid hold of it, and have endeavoured to press it into the service of their favourite theological views. In the present book I have sought to interpret the Gospel record on the ground of the new hypothesis, with special reference to the attitude of Jesus towards the two cardinal apocalyptic ideas of the Kingdom of God and the Messiah. Book The Kingdom of God Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Kingdom of God Classic Reprint written by Ian MacLaren and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kingdom of God There are times when one wishes he had never read the New Testament Scriptures - that he might some day open St. Luke's Gospel and the most beautiful book in the world might come upon his soul like sunrise. It is a doubtful fortune to be born in Athens and every day to see the Parthenon against the violet sky: better to make a single pilgrimage and carry for ever the vision of beauty in your heart. Devout Christians must be haunted by the fear that Jesus' sublime words may have lost their heavenliness through our familiarity, or that they may have been overlaid by our conventional interpretations. This misgiving is confirmed by the fact that from time to time a fresh discovery is made in Jesus' teaching. As a stranger, unfettered by tradition, will detect in a private gallery some masterpiece generations have overlooked, so an unbiassed mind will rescue from neglecting ages some lost idea of the Master. Two finds have been made within recent years; the Divine Fatherhood and the Kingdom of God. If any one will take the Gospels and read them, he will be amazed by the continual recurrence of this refrain, the "Kingdom of God" or "Heaven." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Kingdom of God, and the Church In the body of our Lord's teaching as recorded in the Gospels the references to the kingdom of God occupy a prominent place. According to the common testimony of the Synoptical Gospels Jesus opened his public ministry in Galilee with the announcement, that the kingdom was at hand, Matt. iv. 17; Mk. i. 15; Lk. iv. 43. In the last mentioned passage he even declares that the main purpose of his mission consists in the preaching of the good tidings of the kingdom of God. Book The Magna Charta of the Kingdom of God

Download or read book The Magna Charta of the Kingdom of God written by George Frederick Genung and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Magna Charta of the Kingdom of God: Plain Studies in Our Lord's Sermon on the Mount It is universally agreed that the Sermon on the Mount is an utterance of cardinal significance in its relation to that divine kingdom which Christ came to set up in the hearts of men. What that relation is, however, is a question that has received various answers. The title here chosen may perhaps suggest, as well as a single phrase could, the idea to which the present study of that discourse has led. The Sermon on the Mount is not a code or digest of specific commands, nor is it, though indeed in imperative form, a manifesto, summarizing those intentions of the King which mere extraneous authority is adequate to enforce. It proposes a kind and degree of obedience which only the free and loving impulse of the regenerate heart can make good. Meeting us on the threshold of the kingdom of God, it determines for us our status, where we stand, as free and loyal subjects, in the sight of God and in the presence of our true life.
