This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline Guide to American History by the Source and Library Method The problems before us today are the legacy of those who have preceded us, - the results of their successes or failures. This makes history a living science, no longer to be regarded as a mere culture study, dependent upon the 'memory alone. Today the genuine study of history demands the exercise of all the mental faculties in determining motives, com paring situations and drawing conclusions. This can not be done by reading one meager text book. Dif ferent authors must be read to get different points of view. Better still is the present tendency to send the pupil directly to the original source, whether it be a newspaper clipping, a speech, a diary account, a letter or a government record. How much more meaning the Compromise of 1850 has when one reads the speeches and debates of that time! The original sources are constantly being made more available to the student. Every teacher should own, and may the time soon come when every pupil may own, the sheldon-barnes American history, or some similar collection. The following Outline Guide is putin print for the Convenience of the Iowa State Normal students, but may possibly be useful to others. It is not intended that any one student shall use all the references given, but different students using different books will bring a variety of opinions to the class, whichmust be discussed and accounted for. Six or eight good texts have been cited throughout, and such other books as have been found most helpful. A list of the books referred to with the publishers' names is given for the use of any who may be selecting libraries for school or private use. Book High Lights in United States History

Download or read book High Lights in United States History written by Stephen Edward Hurley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High Lights in United States History: A Help Book for Students of United States History There are outline books in American history almost without number. Why another? Outlines are not rarely of more value to teacher than to pupil. They at times defeat their purpose by going into a wealth of rather confusing detail. It has been my intention to omit much which they usually contain. If this little book proves of any service, and I hope that it will, it will be as much for what it leaves out as for what it includes. A student of any elementary subject does not remember everything. There are some things which he ought to remem ber, certain important features which are the very groundwork of his subject. I have attempted to pick out those things in American History which are important and to arrange them in orderly fashion. Essentials have been emphasized; details have been left to larger works. Brief explanations have been added wherever they might be helpful. An attempt has been made to treat the topics in the order of their occurrence. However, the student of history realizes that to be chronological is not always to be logical. For this reason the time limits of different periods have not always been strictly observed. Highlights IN U. S. History is designed as a help book, to be used in connection with the regular texts. It has been prepared with the pupil chiefly in mind, yet with a feeling that whatever helps the pupil must unfailingly do as much for the teacher. It may also be used as a reference in reading, as a guide in following a lecture course, or as an aid in reviewing for examinations. I am indebted to many books for the facts and. Ideas set forth. Chief among these I must mention: Elson's History of the United States; Epochs of American History, by Thwaites. Book American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book American History Classic Reprint written by Lewis W. Newton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History Not a great deal depends upon the form of notation used in an outline, provided the form adopted is consistently followed, and provided further that it may be easily comprehended and followed by the pupil Like the use of capital letters, punctuation, inden-tion-of paragraphs, and so forth, the use of indention and notation in an outline is for purposes of mental economy. When, because of proper indention, a simple and logical notation, and a clear, definite, and suggestive wording in an historical outline, the student is enabled in the shortest possible time to form a full and correct mental connection between any given subject and the larger subject or subjects of which it is a part, the author of an outline has gone as far as possible in assisting the student's thought process. The form of notation which it has seemed best to adopt for this outline is the following: Capital let ters, capital letters in parentheses, Roman numerals, Roman numerals in parentheses, Arabic numerals, Arabic numerals in parentheses, small Roman numerals, small Roman numerals in parentheses, small letters, and small letters in parentheses. Thus: A, (a), I, (i), I, (i), i, (i) a, (a). The letters are used only where there are so few coordinate parts as not to be confusing. The author of this outline has succeeded best with this method. Another problem in outlining a course in history for class work is that of properly combining period. Or chronological analysis with subject or movement analysis. By an historical movement I mean a series of historical facts or events relating to the same subject and linked together by cause and effect: such, for in stance, as, Territorial Expansion of the United States from 1789 to the Present. By a period of history is meant a certain block of time within which a particular movement or tendency seems to predominate. The almost exclusive use of movement analysis would be preferable were the aim of the course in American history solely to reorganize and interpret facts and events already familiar to the student. But since no such familiarity exists among our students at the beginning of the course, we are {compelled to analyze the general progress of history much in the way that it actually occurred. In this outline, there fore, I have attempted, while following the development of history by periods, to adhere as much as possible to movement analysis. For this reason, I have not always followed the topical order of treatment in any textbook. Indeed, this is unnecessary either in an outline or in the recitation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History by Topic: A Collection of Notes and Outlines of U. S. History, as Used in the Class Room of the Author This little book has been prepared, as its title indicates, as a guide for a topical history class; and has been used by the author for many years with marked success. It will, also, be found very useful for reviews or for reference. For use in the class, we would recommend that first the outline at the heading of each chapter be thoroughly learned (where no outline is given, the paragraph heads may be used). Let each pupil be able to write it upon the board; or, one write as the others dictate. Next study each item; the number for each lesson must vary with their importance and the capabilities of the pupils; but be thorough. The more kinds of text-books the better, as each author will have something that the others have not. Review often. Trace the causes of every important event; also, its effects. Any goo-d anecdote that you may give concerning an event, will help to impress that event upon the pupil's mind. Show them that peace is better than war, and that Hon esty is the best policy; giving as examples such contrasts as Richard H. Lee and Burr, Washington and Arnold, or Jackson and Buchanan. Do not dwell upon the detail of battle but upon its cause and effect. Learn few dates; a few important ones to mark epochs around which the others group - what care we whether a battle was fought May Ist or August 16th? We wish for results. To teach history, or any other branch, get your pupil interested. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A History of the United States Classic Reprint written by Henry Eldridge Bourne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States This textbook is based on the plan of study recommended for the seventh and eighth grades by the Committee of Eight of the American Historical Association. The work for the sixth grade has been given in a shorter book, entitled Introductory American History. About two-thirds of that book concern the beginnings in Great Britain and Europe of the civilization which the people of the United States share with other peoples of European race. The remainder contains descriptions of the discoveries and early settlements of America, principally in the sixteenth century. This volume for the upper grades opens with a chapter which repeats brie y the story of early discovery and settlement. The chapter may be used as a review in those schools which use the Introductory American History. Teachers who do not use that book will find in the chapter the essential facts of the period. American history is so rich and varied that the most serious ques tion which confronts the authors of a textbook is that of selection and emphasis. If space is to be found for adequate treat ment of the most characteristic features of our national develop ment, especially of those within the comprehension of the pupil of the seventh or eighth grade, certain phases of the political and military history of the country must be reserved for later study. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outline of History, Being a Plain History of Life and Mankind: Written With the Advice and Editorial Help of Ernest Barker The need for a common knowledge of the general facts of human history throughout the world has become very evident during the tragic happenings of the last few years. Swifter means of communication have brought all men closer to one another' for good or for evil. War becomes a universal disaster, blind and monstrously destructive; it bombs the baby in its cradle and sinks the food-ships that cater for the non-combatant and the neutral. There can be no peace now, we realize; but a common peace in all the world; no prosperity but a general prosperity. But there can be no common peace and prosperity without common historical ideas. Without such ideas to hold them together in harmonious co-operation, with nothing but narrow, selfish, and conflicting nationalist traditions, races and peoples are bound to drift towards conflict and destruction. This truth, which was apparent to that great philosopher Kant a century or more ago it is the gist of his tract upon universal peace is now plain to the man in the street. Our internal policies and our economic and social ideas are profoundly vitiated at present by wrong and fantastic ideas of the origin and historical relationship Of social classes. A sense of history as the common adventure of all man kind is as necessary for peace within as it is for peace between the nations. Such are the views of history that this Outline seeks to realize. Book A Syllabus of United States History 1492 1920 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus of United States History, 1492-1920 This syllabus is an evolution from an outline of Bassett's Short His tory of the United States, prepared as an aid in teaching an introductory course in United States history at Ohio State University. In giving the syllabus the present form, it seems desirable to explain that while Pro fessor Bassett's text remains the basis, and the page notations through out the body of the syllabus refer to it, considerable liberty has been taken in rearranging the subject matter for class discussion. It has been our practice in assigning collateral reading to allow students to select two entire volumes each semester from the American Statesmen and American Crisis series of biographies, but the inclusion of reference lists at the close of each main division of the syllabus will easily make possible an alternative plan of reading. The classification of references und'er Other texts, General accounts, Topical readings, and Additional topics calls for no comment, except that the numerals preceding the topical references correspond with the subdivisions of the outline. The list of books cited is rigidly minimized, in order to come well within the limitations of small libraries, and because about half of our students are Freshmen for whom excellent treatises are sometimes obviously unsuited. A full list of books cited will be found at the close of the syllabus. The body of the syllabus directs the student's attention to a few important documents in parenthetical references to readings. To minimize expense Brown's Epoch-making Papers has been used, but the term, readings, will permit those who wish to place more stress on documents to use a larger source book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School History of the United States: Containing Maps, a Chronological Chart, and an Outline of Topics for a More Extensive Course of Study But these are passing rapidly away; soon the last one of the actors in our Revolution will have gone down to the grave of his fathers. The voice of these worthies will no longer be heard amidst their descendants, around the domestic hearth, relating the story of their country - its days of wo and weal. To you, therefore, the written page must supply the place of the animated tale from the venerable men whose voice is silenced by the tomb. And a portion of the period allotted for the pursuits of science is claimed by this subject. The rising generation of this country ought to be made early and familiarly acquainted with the way in which God has led their fathers, and to know the expenses they incurred in providing the legacy they have left. It may be said, in truth, that God hath not dealt so with any other people. His hand was scarcely more conspicuous in bringing Israel out of Egypt, than in pro viding for the settlement of the Pilgrims in the new world. Hardly more conspicuous to the sons of Jacob were the pillars of cloud and of fire, than have been the dispensations of his providence in establishing, and defending his American Israel. Blessings like those we now enjoy must be known, and their expense, their char acter, their value appreciated, if we would hope to see them defended and perpetuated. In our hands they are to be preserved or lost. This responsibility is ours, and we can no more divest ourselves of it, than we can terminate our rational existence. There is not, therefore, a son or daughter of the American republic, to whom the details of our history can be either useless or uninteresting. Let us, therefore, call your attention to this interesting study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
