Book The Oxford History of Poland Lithuania

Download or read book The Oxford History of Poland Lithuania written by Robert I. Frost and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of eastern European is dominated by the story of the rise of the Russian empire, yet Russia only emerged as a major power after 1700. For 300 years the greatest power in Eastern Europe was the union between the kingdom of Poland and the grand duchy of Lithuania, one of the longest-lasting political unions in European history. Yet because it ended in the late-eighteenth century in what are misleadingly termed the Partitions of Poland, it barely features in standard accounts of European history. The Making of the Polish-Lithuanian Union 1385-1569 tells the story of the formation of a consensual, decentralised, multinational, and religiously plural state built from below as much as above, that was founded by peaceful negotiation, not war and conquest. From its inception in 1385-6, a vision of political union was developed that proved attractive to Poles, Lithuanians, Ruthenians, and Germans, a union which was extended to include Prussia in the 1450s and Livonia in the 1560s. Despite the often bitter disagreements over the nature of the union, these were nevertheless overcome by a republican vision of a union of peoples in one political community of citizens under an elected monarch. Robert Frost challenges interpretations of the union informed by the idea that the emergence of the sovereign nation state represents the essence of political modernity, and presents the Polish-Lithuanian union as a case study of a composite state. The modern history of Poland, Lithuania, Ukraine, and Belarus cannot be understood without an understanding of the legacy of the Polish-Lithuanian union. This volume is the first detailed study of the making of that union ever published in English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poland is a country which sporadically hits the headlines of the Anglo-Saxon world. It has suffered the dubious distinction of being wiped off the political map in 1795 to be resurrected after the First World War only to suffer apparent annihilation during the Second, with reduction to satellite status of the Soviet Union only to emerge in the van of resistance to Soviet domination during the 1980s. Yet the history of Poland remains comparatively little known. This book offers a brief, non-specialist introduction to Polish history, from medieval times to the present day, and is the only short history of Poland available in English. It concentrates essentially on political development which, particularly for the pre-nineteenth-century period, still remains little known to English readers. The book also includes much material on relations with Germany, Russia, the Ukraine, Lithuania, and other neighbouring states.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline of the History of Poland: From the Earliest Period to the Present Time, in Form of Two Lectures, Delivered to the Members of the City of London Literary and Scientific Institution, the Eastern Athenaeum, the Eastern Literary and Scientific Institution, by a Polish Exile Under the absolute reign of the Piasts (the race of kings), from 964 to 1385, Poland - in spite of an 630 haustion of her national resources of wealth by the frequent inroads of numerous hordes of the harha rians, whose progress she had stopped by the most signalised defeats, in spite of many an unfavourable circumstance - had gradually grown into a powerful and well organized state. Her sodal relations, when compared with that of other countries, fostered within the healthiest seeds of liberty, which sprung up and blossomed in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, would have yielded the fruits of the greatest value to mankind, had not the blast of external causes given a melancholy turn to the scene of her bright hopes, and left her now to contend for her very political existence. I will presently investigate this subject. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
