Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline for Review American History When the close of the year's work approaches, the teacher of history is confronted with the problem of bringing out the subject as a whole, and of so focusing it as to make the picture clear-cut and vivid in the pupil's mind. Text-book and notebook and classroom work have each done their part in arousing the imagination and informing the memory - how shall the prominent figures and the smaller details, the multitude of memories and impressions so made, be fixed and established in their proper perspective? It was the effort to solve this problem that produced this series of Outlines in Greek, Roman, English, and American history. They were first privately printed, and have been experimented with for several years. The result has been so gratifying, in accomplishing the end in view, as to suggest that they might prove similarly useful to others; hence, their present publication. The Outlines have been enlarged and revised in collaboration with a colleague of wide experience in preparing pupils for college, Mr. E. B. Treat, who has used them in their original form, and who therefore brings the valuable assistance of independent experiment and experience to the work of improvement and revision. It cannot be too emphatically said that the Outlines should not be introduced into the class until after the work of the text-book is finished - they are preeminently intended, as their title indicates, for review. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline History of English and American Literature: For Use in Colleges and Schools IT has been my object to compress into this book the minimum of what every young person should know of the literature of our own country and England, even if his education is strictly scientific. I believe that Specializing in any one period is more likely to prove fruitful and of benefit to the student if preceded by a general review of the development of thought and expres sion in the English-speaking peoples. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline Guide to American History by the Source and Library Method The problems before us today are the legacy of those who have preceded us, - the results of their successes or failures. This makes history a living science, no longer to be regarded as a mere culture study, dependent upon the 'memory alone. Today the genuine study of history demands the exercise of all the mental faculties in determining motives, com paring situations and drawing conclusions. This can not be done by reading one meager text book. Dif ferent authors must be read to get different points of view. Better still is the present tendency to send the pupil directly to the original source, whether it be a newspaper clipping, a speech, a diary account, a letter or a government record. How much more meaning the Compromise of 1850 has when one reads the speeches and debates of that time! The original sources are constantly being made more available to the student. Every teacher should own, and may the time soon come when every pupil may own, the sheldon-barnes American history, or some similar collection. The following Outline Guide is putin print for the Convenience of the Iowa State Normal students, but may possibly be useful to others. It is not intended that any one student shall use all the references given, but different students using different books will bring a variety of opinions to the class, whichmust be discussed and accounted for. Six or eight good texts have been cited throughout, and such other books as have been found most helpful. A list of the books referred to with the publishers' names is given for the use of any who may be selecting libraries for school or private use. Book excerpt: A luminous, powerful novel that establishes Rachel Cusk as one of the finest writers in the English language A man and a woman are seated next to each other on a plane. They get to talking—about their destination, their careers, their families. Grievances are aired, family tragedies discussed, marriages and divorces analyzed. An intimacy is established as two strangers contrast their own fictions about their lives. Rachel Cusk's Outline is a novel in ten conversations. Spare and stark, it follows a novelist teaching a course in creative writing during one oppressively hot summer in Athens. She leads her students in storytelling exercises. She meets other visiting writers for dinner and discourse. She goes swimming in the Ionian Sea with her neighbor from the plane. The people she encounters speak volubly about themselves: their fantasies, anxieties, pet theories, regrets, and longings. And through these disclosures, a portrait of the narrator is drawn by contrast, a portrait of a woman learning to face a great loss. Outline takes a hard look at the things that are hardest to speak about. It brilliantly captures conversations, investigates people's motivations for storytelling, and questions their ability to ever do so honestly or unselfishly. In doing so it bares the deepest impulses behind the craft of fiction writing. This is Rachel Cusk's finest work yet, and one of the most startling, brilliant, original novels of recent years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American History: Outlines and Notes; A Preference Manual for Teachers and Pupils Of the making of books there is no end. What is needed is A5 not more books, but better books. This statement is as true with regard to text-books as along other lines of literary effort. Before a new vessel is launched even though it be but a steam tug, 'a demand for its existence should be felt. Before launching this little bark upon the untried sea of popular favor, we inquire, Is-it needed? Will it supply a long-felt demand? Is this demand sufficiently pressing to warrant the time and expense required to launch this little bark? From the standpoint of a field educational worker, I do not hesitate to say, after years of observation, that a complete series of outlines to guide in the study of United States History, pointing out the hand of Providence in the discovery, exploration, and colonization of America at just the time and in just the manner prescribed by the Ruler of nations, is greatly needed by our teachers everywhere as an aid in their earnest endeavor to impress upon the mind of the student the eternal principle, The most High ruleth in the kingdom of men and giveth it to whomsoever He will. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Review of History and Politics, and General Repository of Literature and State Papers, Vol. 2 Those great qualities of mind for which General Hamilton was so illustriously distinguished, and which are so seldom concomitant in one individual, are nowhere more conspicuous, than in his development of the plan and views of the Conven tion. His essays on this subject exemplify in a striking manner, the unerrin g sagacity of his political calculations, -his profound and enlarged acquaintance with the science and history of poli tics, - his enlightened and ardent attachment to the cause of temperate freedom, - the magnanimous candor of his disposi tion, - that original, and, if we may be allowed the expression, that magnificent cast of thought, which was visible in all his intellectual efforts, and by which nature seemed to have mark ed him out for the highest sphere of human action. The num bers of the Federalist which explain the structure Of the federal system, bear testimony, not only to the extraordinary merits of the writer, but to those of the American Convention, of whose feelings and reasonings he may be considered as the organ. We have already intimated, in general terms, our ex alted opinion of the character Of that august assembly, and have stated summarily the peculiar advantages as well as difficulties, under which they acted in the execution of their stupendous trust. The more minute examination into which we shall now enter, of the considerations and principles by which 'they were guided, and of the result of their labours, will confirm the eulogy which we have so unhesitatingly pronounced on them, and on the constitution which issued from their hands. Never was any body Of legislators intrusted with so awful and momentous a charge, and never did any deliberative assembly so completely realize an image, which Mr. Burke proclaims to be the most imposing and venerable that can be presented to the imagination the concentration of the wisdom and virtue of a whole people into one focus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Historical Review, Vol. 15: October, 1909, to July, 1910 Among your great contributions to civilization President Eliot rightly counts your great inventions; still, as science is universal, inventions are generally suggestions from the work of other people, and those achieved by you would certainly have come out sooner or later with the progress of science. What has come from you, in opposition to the general modern tendency, is your respect for woman, the place you have made for her among mankind, together with the strong current of pure thought, which you oppose to the literature of sensualism flourishing among other races. Certainly asceticism, in the monastic times, and chivalry, in the Middle Ages, show well enough that Europe is capable of engendering the strongest currents of purity; even yours is probably only a survival of English Puritanism, kept alive under more favorable conditions; but, with regard to purity of thought towards woman, the present leadership of the world belongs indeed to America.
