Book Outlaws mobsters crooks from the Old West to the Internet

Download or read book Outlaws mobsters crooks from the Old West to the Internet written by Marie J. MacNee and published by UXL. This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the lives of seventy-five North American criminals including the nature of their crimes, their motivations, and information relating to the law officers who challenged them. This set chronicles the history of seventy-three famous and infamous criminals, including duos like Bonnie and Clyde and gangs such as The Purple Hand Gang. Each volume includes a reader's guide that explains the purpose of the set and what the reader will find in each entry, an alphabetical listing of the outlaws, and a time line encompassing 1750 to the present that puts the outlaws into the context of the world at the time they were active. An index for the set is included in each volume. The outlaws are broken down into mobsters, racketeers and gamblers, robbers, computer criminals, spies, swindlers, terrorists, bandits and gunslingers, bootleggers and pirates. Each individual entry includes a biographical look at the outlaw, his or her crimes, and the end result of those crimes. Information boxes that give the reader little-known facts about the criminal's life; suggestions for books to read ( Badmen by Jay Robert Nash, [M. Evans, 1973] seems to be the most suggested title); movies relating to that criminal; and the many photographs all add to the set's interest level. There is no glossary, but many words that a middle school student would find difficult are defined within the text. Browsers and researchers alike will make good use of this enjoyable reference set due to its fact-filled content and peek into the lives of such a wide variety of outlaws. Because of the time line, this book would also be helpful for students who need to do a report on a particular time period and want to choose an outlaw as their focus. While the cost may be prohibitive for some, it would be a good addition because of its short, factual chapters and interesting tidbits of information.-LynnEvarts. Copyright 1999 Voya Reviews Vol. 1-3 presents the lives of seventy-five North American criminals including the nature of their crimes, their motivations, and information relating to the law officers who challenged them. Book The Great American Outlaw

Download or read book The Great American Outlaw written by Frank Richard Prassel and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1996-09-01 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores in depth the origins, development, and prospects of outlawry and of the relationship of outlaws to the social conditions of changing times. Throughout American history you will find larger-than-life brigands in every period and every region. Often, because we hunger for simple justice, we romanticize them to the point of being unable to separate fact from fiction. Frank Richard Prassel brings this home in a thorough and fascinating examination of the concept of outlawry from Robin Hood, Dick Turpin, and Blackbeard through Jean Lafitte, Pancho Villa, and Billy the Kid to more modern personalities such as John Dillinger, Claude Dallas, and D. B. Cooper. A separate chapter on molls, plus equal treatment in the histories of gangs, traces women's involvement in outlaw activities. Prassel covers the folklore as well as the facts, even including an appendix of ballads by and about outlaws. He makes clear how this motley group of bandits, pirates, highwaymen, desperadoes, rebels, hoodlums, renegades, gangsters, and fugitives—who stand tall in myth—wither in the light of truth, but flourish in the movies. As he tells the stories, there is little to confirm that Jesse and Frank James, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the Daltons, Pretty Boy Floyd, Ma Barker, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, Belle Starr, the Apache Kid, or any of the so-called good badmen, did anything that did not enrich or otherwise benefit themselves. But there is plenty of evidence, in the form of slain victims and ruined lives, to show how many ways they caused harm. The Great American Outlaw is as much an excellent survey on the phenomenon as it is a brilliant exposition of the larger than-life figures who created it. Above all, it is a tribute to that aspect of humanity that Americans admire most and that Prassel describes as a willingness "to fight, however hopelessly, against exhibitions of privilege."

Book excerpt: Train robbers, horse thieves, murderers. These are only a few of the accusations leveled against the Dalton Gang, the fraternal band of Western lawmen turned outlaws in the latter part of the nineteenth century. Daring in their exploits, the gang members turned their backs on laws they found to be criminally flawed and stole horses, bootlegged whiskey into Indian Territory, and committed the first American train robbery. A rare firsthand account originally published in 1918, this volume details the time when sheriffs were paid for each man they hanged, law enforcement rode under the banner of "Smith & Wesson" rather than "To Serve and Protect," and outlaws ruled the rails.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have always been fascinated by criminals. Belle Gunness and the Bloody Benders were a different breed of criminal, more deadly, and harder to detect. While bank and train robbers rarely harmed their victims, Belle Gunness and the Benders took a gruesome pleasure in killing their victims before they robbed them. The Banditti of the Prairie was a loose-knit band of thieves that came together during the 1830s and 1840s. Their field of operations covered a multi-state area, including Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Michigan, and Arkansas. The members of the Banditti would come together to pull a raise, then disappear into the wooded banks along the area rivers. Should one of them get caught, a dozen members came forward with alibis placing them hundreds of miles away when the crime was committed. In many areas, the local sheriff or judge were members of the Banditti or received payoffs from them. As a result, it was next to impossible to secure convictions against the criminals. When things got too far out-of-whack, Judge Lynch, dealt out justice at the end of a rope. Then life went back to normal-for a while. As civilization crossed the Mississippi, criminals became bolder and more daring. The Reno Brothers pulled the first robbery of a moving train in 1866. Jesse James spent a decade perfecting the method after he robbed his first train at Adair, Iowa, in 1873.
