Book Outlaws mobsters crooks from the Old West to the Internet

Download or read book Outlaws mobsters crooks from the Old West to the Internet written by Marie J. MacNee and published by UXL. This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents the lives of seventy-five North American criminals including the nature of their crimes, their motivations, and information relating to the law officers who challenged them. This set chronicles the history of seventy-three famous and infamous criminals, including duos like Bonnie and Clyde and gangs such as The Purple Hand Gang. Each volume includes a reader's guide that explains the purpose of the set and what the reader will find in each entry, an alphabetical listing of the outlaws, and a time line encompassing 1750 to the present that puts the outlaws into the context of the world at the time they were active. An index for the set is included in each volume. The outlaws are broken down into mobsters, racketeers and gamblers, robbers, computer criminals, spies, swindlers, terrorists, bandits and gunslingers, bootleggers and pirates. Each individual entry includes a biographical look at the outlaw, his or her crimes, and the end result of those crimes. Information boxes that give the reader little-known facts about the criminal's life; suggestions for books to read ( Badmen by Jay Robert Nash, [M. Evans, 1973] seems to be the most suggested title); movies relating to that criminal; and the many photographs all add to the set's interest level. There is no glossary, but many words that a middle school student would find difficult are defined within the text. Browsers and researchers alike will make good use of this enjoyable reference set due to its fact-filled content and peek into the lives of such a wide variety of outlaws. Because of the time line, this book would also be helpful for students who need to do a report on a particular time period and want to choose an outlaw as their focus. While the cost may be prohibitive for some, it would be a good addition because of its short, factual chapters and interesting tidbits of information.-LynnEvarts. Copyright 1999 Voya Reviews Vol. 1-3 presents the lives of seventy-five North American criminals including the nature of their crimes, their motivations, and information relating to the law officers who challenged them. Book Outlaw Tales of the Old West Fifty True Stories of Desperados Crooks Criminals and Bandits

Download or read book Outlaw Tales of the Old West Fifty True Stories of Desperados Crooks Criminals and Bandits written by Erin H. Turner and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of fifty outlaw tales includes well-knowns such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Frank and Jesse James, Belle Starr (and her dad), and Pancho Villa, along with a fair smattering of women, organized crime bosses, smugglers, and of course the usual suspects: highwaymen, bank and train robbers, cattle rustlers, snake-oil salesmen, and horse thieves. Men like Henry Brown and Burt Alvord worked on both sides of the law either at different times of their lives or simultaneously. Clever shyster Soapy Smith and murderer Martin Couk survived by their wits, while the outlaw careers of the dimwitted DeAutremont brothers and bigmouthed Diamondfield Jack were severely limited by their intellect, or lack thereof. Nearly everyone in these pages was motivated by greed, revenge, or a lethal mixture of the two. The most bloodthirsty of the bunch, such as the heartless (and, some might argue, soulless) Annie Cook and trigger-happy Augustine Chacón, surely had evil written into their very DNA.

Book 100 Oklahoma Outlaws Gangsters Lawmen

Download or read book 100 Oklahoma Outlaws Gangsters Lawmen written by Laurence Yadon and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only thing wilder than Oklahoma in the late nineteenth century are the tales that continue to surround it. In the days of the Wild West, Oklahoma was teeming with assassins, guerillas, hijackers, kidnappers, gangs, and misfits of every size and shape imaginable. Featuring such legendary characters as Billy the Kid, Bonnie and Clyde, Machine Gun Kelly, Belle Starr, and Pretty Boy Floyd, this book combines recorded fact with romanticized legend, allowing the reader to decide how much to believe. Violent and out of control, the figures covered in 100 Oklahoma Outlaws, Gangsters, and Lawmen often left behind numerous victims, grisly accounts, and unforgettable stories. Included are criminals like James Deacon Miller, the devout Methodist and hired assassin. Righteous and devious, he often avoided the gallows by convincing others to admit to his murders. Rufus Buck, a man of Native American descent, targeted white settlers. His crimes against them became so heinous as to cause the Creek nation to take up arms against him. The answer to criminals such as these came in the form of Hanging Judge Parker and other officers of the law. Although they were greatly outnumbered, they provided some balance to the chaos. This historical compilation covers every memorable outlaw and lawman who passed through Oklahoma.

Book Gangs and Outlaws of Western Pennsylvania

Download or read book Gangs and Outlaws of Western Pennsylvania written by Thomas White and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-24 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violent bank heists, bold train robberies and hardened gangs all tear across the history of the wild west--western Pennsylvania, that is. The region played reluctant host to the likes of the infamous Biddle Boys, who escaped Allegheny County Jail by romancing the warden's wife, and the Cooley Gang, which held Fayette County in its violent grip at the close of the nineteenth century. Then there was Pennsylvania's own Bonnie and Clyde--Irene and Glenn--whose murderous misadventures earned the "trigger blonde" and her beau the electric chair in 1931. From the perilous train tracks of Erie to the gritty streets of Pittsburgh, authors Thomas White and Michael Hassett trace the dark history of the crooks, murderers and outlaws who both terrorized and fascinated the citizenry of western Pennsylvania.

Killers like Bible-quoting choir leader Deacon Jim Miller wreaked havoc. Gunslinger femme fatale Belle Starr specialized in horse theft. Wannabe outlaws like Al Jennings traded train robbing for politics and Hollywood films. And Elmer McCurdy's determination and inept skill earned him a carnival slot and the nickname "the Bandit Who Wouldn't Give Up." Historians Robert Barr Smith and Laurence J. Yadon dispel myths surrounding some of the most significant lawbreakers in Sooner history.
