Book Bred of the Desert Esprios Classics

Download or read book Bred of the Desert Esprios Classics written by Marcus Horton and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-09-16 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It was high noon in the desert, but there was no dazzling sunlight. Over the earth hung a twilight, a yellow-pink softness that flushed across the sky like the approach of a shadow, covering everything yet concealing nothing, creeping steadily onward, yet seemingly still, until, pressing low over the earth, it took on changing color, from pink to gray, from gray to black-gloom that precedes tropical showers. Then the wind came-a breeze rising as it were from the hot earth-forcing the Spanish dagger to dipping acknowledgment, sending dust-devils swirling across the slow curves of the desert-and then the storm burst in all its might. For this was a storm-a sand-storm of the Southwest."

Book The English Traditional Ballad

Download or read book The English Traditional Ballad written by David Atkinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ballads are a fascinating subject of study not least because of their endless variety. It is quite remarkable that ballads taken down or recorded from singers separated by centuries in time and by hundreds of kilometres in distance, should be both different and yet recognizably the same. In The English Traditional Ballad, David Atkinson examines the ways in which the body of ballads known in England make reference both to ballads from elsewhere and to other English folk songs. The book outlines current theoretical directions in ballad scholarship: structuralism, traditional referentiality, genre and context, print and oral transmission, and the theory of tradition and revival. These are combined to offer readers a method of approaching the central issue in ballad studies - the creation of meaning(s) out of ballad texts. Atkinson focuses on some of the most interesting problems in ballad studies: the 'wit-combat' in versions of The Unquiet Grave; variable perspectives in comic ballads about marriage; incest as a ballad theme; problems of feminine motivation in ballads like The Outlandish Knight and The Broomfield Hill; murder ballads and murder in other instances of early popular literature. Through discussion of these issues and themes in ballad texts, the book outlines a way of tracing tradition(s) in English balladry, while recognizing that ballad tradition is far from being simply chronological and linear.

Book excerpt: John Montgomery Ward (1860-1925) tossed the second perfect game in major league history and later became the game's best shortstop and a great, inventive manager. He led the players into their own league in 1890 and came within a hair's breadth of changing the structure of baseball forever. Two years before that, however, in 1888, he published the book Base-Ball: How to Become a Player. The book is one of the game's early classics, and should be in every serious baseball library. "The author ventures to present this book to the public. because he believes there are many points in the game of base-ball which can be told only by a player," wrote Ward in his preface to the book. "He has given some space to a consideration of the origin and early history of the game. because they are subjects deserving of more attention than is generally accorded them . His principal aim, howcver, has been to produce a hand-book of the game, a picture of the plays seen by a player." Illustrated with woodcuts, the book is divided into chapters for each position on the field as well as chapters on the origin of the game, theory and strategy, training, base-running, and batting. SABR previously published this book under the title Ward's Baseball Book in 1993. This is the first SABR ebook edition.
