"W'at ye talkin' about?" inquired the Rev. William Watchcob, a grey-haired mountaineer preacher, who had finished his "preachin'," and stood talking to a group of parishioners at the church door. He was somewhat out of sorts, notwithstanding his late lurid dissertation on original sin. The rain falling in gentle rhythm without held the few jarring members within doors. "I be talkin' erbout Gyp, that 'bominable wee Stybright cub who's alius givin' his daddy and mammy trouble," Snags replied with unnecessary glow in her sharp, resolute eyes. Well, you see, mister, some times I miss 'em and I wanted the dog to get a good start. Although one of the smallest of game animals, the cottontail rabbit furnishes more pounds of meat annually in the U. S. Than all the big game species combined. A conservative estimate places the total harvest at something over pounds each year - this despite the fact that the cottontail rabbit is a choice item in the diet of a host of predators and is subject to a gamut of diseases and parasites which at times reach epizootic proportions. There is some conjecture as to whether the cotton tail IS the number one game animal in North Caro lina. Most biologists, however, put the cottontail first on the list 1n number harvested each year, with the gray squirrel running a close second. There is no doubt, however, that the PH 01' bunny rabbit holds a warm place ln the hearts of Tarheel nimrods.
