Book excerpt: Young Lentil wants to learn to sing, but no matter how hard he tries he can’t sing on key. He can’t even pucker his lips to whistle! So Lentil learns to play the harmonica instead and beautifully carries his tune through the winding streets of Alto, Ohio. Lentil masters his craft just as the beloved Colonel Carter returns to town and the Alto residents decide to plan a special celebration. But Old Sneep, the grouchiest man in town, doesn’t want anyone celebrating Colonel Carter’s homecoming. When Old Sneep stops the welcoming parade in its tracks, Lentil’s music turns out to be just what Alto needs. Robert McCloskey, the Caldecott-winning author and illustrator of Make Way for Ducklings, brings readers this delightful two color picture book.

Book Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen Cleveland s Free Stamp

Download or read book Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen Cleveland s Free Stamp written by Edward J. Olszewski and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1985, the Sohio oil company commissioned Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen to design and construct a large outdoor sculpture for its new corporate headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. The result was Free Stamp, a bold and distinctive installation that captured both a Pop Art sensibility and a connection to the city’s industrial past. Sohio executives approved the design, and work was already underway, when British Petroleum acquired the company. The new owners quickly decided that the sculpture was “inappropriate” for their building and attempted to rid themselves of Free Stamp by donating it to the city of Cleveland—a gift that the city initially had no desire to accept. After much debate and public protest, the sculpture found a home in Willard Park, where it stands today. This is the first study of any sculpture by Oldenburg and van Bruggen to examine the genesis of their art from conception to installation. Edward J. Olszewski has put together a fascinating narrative based on interviews with the artists, archival material from city records, and in-house corporate memoranda, as well as letters to the editor and political cartoons. He traces the development of the sculpture from the artists’ first sketches and models to the installation of the completed work in its urban environment.

Book excerpt: There is no other exhibit like Outdoor Sculpture at Maudslay. This artist-organized event is site-specific, egalitarian, multi-generational, and uncurated. Its format inspires thought-provoking, accessible artwork. Over three hundred diverse artists, including professionals and those new to artmaking, created 700 plus in-site installations during its first twenty years. Photographs of over 400 of these accompany the show's history and culture. Artists' monumental scale, intimate, conceptual, or representational sculptures form this art in nature. The exhibit's origin, funding, format, and leave-no-trace philosophy, and anecdotes about the artists and their work personalize the book. Always outdoors, the art endures the elements - even an occasional Nor'easter. The public, local towns, and the State of Massachusetts have consistently supported the exhibit since 1998, verifying its value to the community. Inspiring backdrops are the rolling meadows, forests, water features, and historic gardens of Maudslay State Park in Newburyport. Open to walkers, those on horseback, and families, the park is an ideal venue for site-specific art. Self-expression is vital to the show these outdoor artists create. This book is their story.

  • Pages : 96 pages

Download or read book A Garden for Art written by Valerie J. Fletcher and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 1998 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than sixty sculptures in a broad range of styles dating from the 1880s through the 1960s are displayed in it, while another dozen sculptures from the 1960s to the 1990s occupy the plaza around the museum building. Together the landscaped grounds form an outdoor gallery that is enjoyed by more than 340,000 visitors annually. In her introductory essay, Valerie Fletcher records the little-known history of the Hirshhorn Museum's garden and plaza, and provides a succinct overview of one hundred years of subjects and styles as represented in the Hirshhorn's sculpture collection. This is followed by sumptuous photographs of the sculptures and of the garden's changes through the seasons. Among the artists represented are Rodin, Bourdelle, Maillol, Matisse, Archipenko, Lachaise, Miro, Calder, Picasso, Smith, Moore, Kelly, Cragg, and Shea. Texts on the individual works address many of the comments made by visitors to the garden, from queries about Rodin's Burghers of Calais to wonderment at the celestial surprise hidden within Snelson's abstract Needle Tower.
