Spegal'skii and the Reconstruction of Pskov, is the first comprehensive, critical biography in any language of this outstanding man, a native of one of Russia's oldest and most beautiful cities, Pskov. It is the story of one man's love and passion for Pskov's architectural and cultural heritage and the struggles he endured to try and save that heritage. Spegal'skii (1909-69) was a man of enormous gifts and wide-ranging interests, stonemason, architect-restorer, scholar, steeplejack, and gifted artist who poured his love for Pskov into art intended to educate and inspire his fellow citizens. He lived in a time of great political and cultural turmoil in Russia and was tempered by the struggles he endured early in his life. Orphaned as a teenager after his father died in WWI and his mother moved away, he raised himself in an abandoned 17th-century house, spending his days drawing the architectural monuments which dotted the ancient city and working as an apprentice stonemason. He moved to Leningrad and became an architect, and returned to begin resurrecting his city's ancient monuments. His work was cut short by WWII, during which he barely survived the siege of Leningrad, camouflaging and preserving the city's damaged architecture. He returned to Pskov after the war, to a city devastated by Nazi brutality, living under extremely severe conditions and supported in his work by his wife, the architect Ol'ga K. Arshakuni. As the second half of the title indicates, the book chronicles his efforts to preserve architectural monuments in post-war Pskov in 1944-47, detailing his conservation and restoration work, his revolutionary project for architectural reserves and the foundation of the Pskov Restoration Workshop. However, he was eventually driven from his native city by forces opposed to his plans and ideas, the "e;Outcast Visionary"e;, an outsider who battled the reconstruction projects undertaken in Pskov by a government hostile to its architectural legacy. The book addresses in detail such topics as his controversial theories on the evolution and characteristics of Pskov stone church and house architecture, his extensive legacy of scholarly publications and his fine, graphic and applied art. Biblical prophecy and, to a lesser extent, classical oracle again became viable models for poetry and even for journalistic prose. Notably, this development arose out of the new-found freedom of biblical interpretation that began in the mid-eighteenth century, as the Bible was increasingly seen to be a literary and mythical text. Taking Walter Benjamin’s thinking about history as a point of departure, the author shows how the model for Romantic prophecy emerges less as a prediction of the future than as a call to change in the present, even as it quotes, at key turns, texts from the past. After surveying developments in eighteenth-century biblical hermeneutics, as well as the numerous instances of prophetic eruption in Romantic poetry, the book culminates in close readings of works by Blake, Hölderlin, and Coleridge. Each of these writers interpreted the Bible in strong, variously radical and conservative ways, and each reworked prophetic texts in often startling fashion. The author’s reading of Blake focuses on the complex temporal and rhetorical dynamics at work in a prophetic tradition, with attention paid to the key mediating figure of Milton. The chapter on Hölderlin investigates the truth-claim of poetry and the consequences of Hölderlin’s insight into the necessarily figural character of poetry. The analysis of Coleridge correlates his theory of allegory and symbol with his theory and practice of political writing, which often relies on mobilizing prophetic authority. Together, the readings force us to reexamine the claims and practices of Romantic poets and thinkers and their ideas and ideologies, not without engendering some allegorical resonance with issues in our own time.

Yet, within the variety, a certain generic core remains constant: the journey as cultural critique, as exploration beyond society and within oneself. This book traces the generic evolution of the road movie with respect to its diverse presentations, emphasizing it as an "independent genre" that attempts to incorporate marginality and subversion on many levels. David Laderman begins by identifying the road movie's defining features and by establishing the literary, classical Hollywood, and 1950s highway culture antecedents that formatively influenced it. He then traces the historical and aesthetic evolution of the road movie decade by decade through detailed and lively discussions of key films. Laderman concludes with a look at the European road movie, from the late 1950s auteurs through Godard and Wenders, and at compelling feminist road movies of the 1980s and 1990s.

How can one reconcile this complexity with the fact that human thinking cannot escape the centre/periphery dichotomy?
