Book The Art of Fire

Download or read book The Art of Fire written by Daniel Hume and published by Random House. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fire can fascinate, inspire, capture the imagination and bring families and communities together. It has the ability to amaze, energise and touch something deep inside all of us. For thousands of years, at every corner of the globe, humans have been huddling around fires: from the basic and primitive essentials of light, heat, energy and cooking, through to modern living, fire plays a central role in all of our lives. The ability to accurately and quickly light a fire is one of the most important skills anyone setting off on a wilderness adventure could possess, yet very little has been written about it. Through his narrative Hume also meditates on the wider topics surrounding fire and how it shapes the world around us.

Book Out of the Smoke and Into the Flame

Download or read book Out of the Smoke and Into the Flame written by Mark Goodman & and published by . This book was released on 2016-02-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay by MARK GOODMAN and Photographs by SYBIL MILLERThe Bastrop County Complex Wildfire started September 4, 2011, a Sunday afternoon on Labor Day weekend. It burned along a twenty-four mile front consuming thirty-five thousand acres—half of the Lost Pines—including my three acres, house of twenty-four years, and the places I photographed. It was the most destructive wildfire in Texas history. Five thousand people evacuated, two people died, nearly seventeen hundred homes and businesses were destroyed, and a million and a half trees vanished. FROM THE INTRODUCTION: What remained was emptiness and irrevocable change. I couldn’t grasp my future or touch anything from my past. Other fire victims partially consoled themselves by saying they still had their family, that the rest was just stuff. But I didn’t have a family, and stuff was my anchor. The insurance company adjustor explained to me the value of such things: Something artlessly made from mahogany had greater value than something lovingly made from white pine—base materials counted, they are what they are, possessing properties that are known and established values. Whereas art and love are in the eye of the beholder—my taste, your taste, both are up for debate, nothing more than agreeing to disagree—a stalemate. In the end, you loved what you had and now you don’t have it. Your compensation consists of memories. PLEASE CLICK PREVIEW TO SEE ENTIRE BOOK.

Sedaris proceeds from bizarre conundrums of daily life - the etiquette of having a lozenge fall from your mouth into the lap of a fellow passenger or how to soundproof your windows with LP covers against neurotic songbirds - to the most deeply resonant human truths. Taking in the parasitic worm that once lived in his mother-in-law's leg, an encounter with a dingo and the purchase of a human skeleton, and culminating in a brilliant account of his attempt to quit smoking - in Tokyo - David Sedaris's sixth story collection is a fresh masterpiece of comic writing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Book Critics Circle Award Winner: “The terrifying story of the worst disaster in the history of the US Forest Service’s elite Smokejumpers.” —Kirkus Reviews A devastating and lyrical work of nonfiction, Young Men and Fire describes the events of August 5, 1949, when a crew of fifteen of the US Forest Service’s elite airborne firefighters, the Smokejumpers, stepped into the sky above a remote forest fire in the Montana wilderness. Two hours after their jump, all but three of the men were dead or mortally burned. Haunted by these deaths for forty years, Norman Maclean puts together the scattered pieces of the Mann Gulch tragedy in this extraordinary book. Alongside Maclean’s now-canonical A River Runs Through It and Other Stories, Young Men and Fire is recognized today as a classic of the American West. This edition of Maclean’s later triumph—the last book he would write—includes a powerful new foreword by Timothy Egan, author of The Big Burn and The Worst Hard Time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2020 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards Winner, Silver (Political and Social Sciences) Winner of the Montaigne Medal, awarded to "the most thought-provoking books" The first book to explore a shocking yet all-too-common type of wrongful conviction—one that locks away innocent people for crimes that never actually happened. Rodricus Crawford was convicted and sentenced to die for the murder by suffocation of his beautiful baby boy. After years on death row, evidence confirmed what Crawford had claimed all along: he was innocent, and his son had died from an undiagnosed illness. Crawford is not alone. A full one-third of all known exonerations stem from no-crime wrongful convictions. The first book to explore this common but previously undocumented type of wrongful conviction, Smoke but No Fire tells the heartbreaking stories of innocent people convicted of crimes that simply never happened. A suicide is mislabeled a homicide. An accidental fire is mislabeled an arson. Corrupt police plant drugs on an innocent suspect. A false allegation of assault is invented to resolve a custody dispute. With this book, former New York City public defender Jessica S. Henry sheds essential light on a deeply flawed criminal justice system that allows—even encourages—these convictions to regularly occur. Smoke but No Fire promises to be eye-opening reading for legal professionals, students, activists, and the general public alike as it grapples with the chilling reality that far too many innocent people spend real years behind bars for fictional crimes.

Book Into the Smoke with New York s Bravest

Download or read book Into the Smoke with New York s Bravest written by Thomas Barry and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Into the Smokeis a work of photojournalism and traces Tom Barry's career as a firefighter--spanning parts of four decades in FDNY--along with the forty-year effort of noted freelance photographer Michael Dick. The era covered in this book is best known in the fire service on the east coast of the United States as the War Years, the urban decay and social unrest that started in the 1960s and persisted, continually fed by arson for profit, into the 1990s. Firefighting is a truckie blindly crawling down a smoke-filled hallway, searching for victims, hoping to find them before the fire does. It is an engine operator, calling on the last ounce of strength and pushing deeper into the apartment to extinguish the fire in the rear bedroom and beat the "Red Devil" one more time. Fellowship of the firefighter Fantasies from childhood intertwine with the terror of impending death, the pain of disfigurement, the joys of success, and the comradeship and respect of their peers. Many of the fires depicted in this book predate OSHA personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. This period was a fertile stage for innovation and development of firefighting techniques and equipment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From USA Today Bestselling Author, A.M. Hargrove, comes the 3rd stand alone book in the West Brothers Novels. They say there's a fine line between love and hate. Ours was a mile wide. To put it bluntly, my life sucked. When I finally got up the courage to divorce my jerk of a husband, never in a million years did I imagine his prick of an attorney would gain him full custody of my daughter. My scant two weekend visits per month killed me.And my ex made it as difficult as possible on me every single time.So imagine my shock when said attorney's name appeared at the top of the list at the in-patient substance abuse clinic where I worked as a counselor. My list. The first thing that occurred was I completely lost my Zen. Then my blood boiled. Then his chart flew across the room and slammed into the wall. How could this possibly be happening?Karma couldn't be this cruel. How in the world could I be an empathetic abuse counselor to the cocky Pearson West, who destroyed my life?I would rather become an addict myself, or better yet, strangle him first. This is a full-length, contemporary, single-mom, enemies-to-lovers, romance.I'm so in love with this story, the amazing characters and the storyline. This 6 star story was just beautifully executed to perfection. TDC reviewsI was captured and tied down to this book within one instant. Most of the time I wasn't sure whether it was a romance or a thriller that I held in my hands and devoured it in every spare minute I had. Andrea, Goodreads ReviewerThe plot was fast paced from beginning to end and the tension and suspense had me gripping my kindle so tight my knuckles were white. Make My Day Books
