Download or read book From the Kitchen to the Parlor written by Lanita Jacobs-Huey and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2006-04-20 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines how hair and hair care take on situated social meanings among African American women in varied linguistic interactions--whether with one another, with African American men, or with European American women. Based on years of fieldwork in a range of sites, from cosmetology schools in South Carolina to hair care seminars in Beverly Hills, from stand up comedy clubs in Los Angeles to online debates about black hair, Jacob-Huey's multifaceted approach documents how and why hair comes to matter so much in African American women's construction of their identities, and how language both mediates and produces these social meanings. --From publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively and authoritative volume makes clear that the quest for taste and manners in America has been essential to the serious pursuit of a democratic culture. Spanning the material world from mansions and silverware to etiquette books, city planning, and sentimental novels, Richard L. Bushman shows how a set of values originating in aristocratic court culture gradually permeated almost every stratum of American society and served to prevent the hardening of class consciousness. A work of immense and richly nuanced learning, The Refinement of America newly illuminates every facet of both our artifacts and our values.

Book excerpt: A life lived in earnest provides one with a moral compass upon which to gauge the parameters of one's inner journey, the source of any lasting fulfillment. Wayfarers gives evidence of the epic miles one may travel when morality transcends the dead-end of mindless dogma and becomes, instead, a conduit to personal happiness. John Johnson, linguist A Scribendi critique Hello Mr. Cook, I read your engaging novel and thoroughly enjoyed it. I found it difficult to put away in the evenings. It was a pleasure to read with its vivid details presented in wonderfully lush descriptive passages. By focusing specifically on a handful of characters, you manage to ensure that the story is not too bogged down in historical details, which could be distracting. The book is well-organized and obviously well thought out. The plot, which is excellent, flows organically from one event to the next, toward the natural conclusion. It's especially interesting how Daniel and Jerry's lives parallel each other throughout the book. The dialogue is so well done. You do an excellent job of capturing the nuances of the characters' speech and their accents. Additionally, you do well at making the dialogue realistic to the characters. For the most part, it seems that each character would naturally say whatever it is you have written for them. Very nicely done! Mr. Cook: I'm the person at WritersLiterary responsible for reviewing your manuscript. I just finished -- and feel compelled to tell you that I think you have a SUPERB writing style, and I love your prose. Russell (Brooklyn, NY)

Book excerpt: Jeremy had to go to the funeral to honor his uncle Jim, who had taught him so much about horses and life in general. He knew somehow he had to share the knowledge with others, especially what Jim had taught him about horse whispering, a talent that only six other people had in the states at the time. Jeremy also wondered about what doors this talent would open and where it might lead him. A man of influence was how Jeremy remembered Jim. Even in his death, Jim was bigger than life. The way he dealt with people and horses had been a gift sent from heaven above. Jeremy knew from all of Jims teachings that he could be one of the best horse whisperers ever. Jeremy only hoped that he could prove his talents when he tried out for the foreman position at the E&J Stud Farm owned by Esmira, a beautiful independent woman used to having things her way. Both Jeremy and Esmira were not prepared for what would happen if love was thrown into the mix.

The Mill of Lost Dreams is a story of love, friendship and sacrifice that provides an inside view into the world of textile mills and the daily life of seven courageous souls who leave home and risk everything for their shared dream of a better life: Angelina and Guido Wallabee, who have left their family’s failed farm in Italy; eleven-year-old Miranda Alysworth and her fifteen-year-old brother, Francois, who have escaped from indentured service in Canada; twins Phoebe and Charlie Dougherty, the children of Irish immigrant parents, who, though not yet thirteen, are forced to work in Troy Mill to support their family after their father’s untimely death; and eleven-year-old, Anne Kenny, an orphan who’s never known where she came from. All but one take jobs in Troy Mill in Fall River. Over the course of seven decades, there are marriages, births, secrets exposed, friendships tested, and innocence lost. Some succeed in making a new life away from harm but pay a terrible price. Book 110 Turn of the Century House Designs

Download or read book 110 Turn of the Century House Designs written by R. W. Shoppell and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its wealth of representative styles and its emphasis on craftsmanship and exterior design, the late-Victorian era ranks among the halcyon days in American house building. This survey of the era's traditional designs—reproduced from a rare edition—offers a complete and authentic guide to faithful restorations or re-creations. A New York City-based firm prepared and published this catalog in 1897, selecting the very best models from more than 12,000 houses built from their plans. Designed with style, utility, and low cost of construction uppermost in mind, it features hundreds of illustrations, including perspective drawings and floor plans. Details of interior and exterior materials and potential modifications include remarks on the particular amenities of each house, plus estimates of building costs. Antique collectors, home hobbyists, and fans of traditional design will find this volume a valuable reference and an endless source of inspiration.
