Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Every leader in America needs to read this book! It's by far the best summary of what's at stake." —Rick Warren The Supreme Court has issued a decision, but that doesn't end the debate. Now that the Supreme Court has ruled, Americans face momentous debates about the nature of marriage and religious liberty. Because the Court has redefined marriage in all 50 states, we have to energetically protect our freedom to live according to conscience and faith as we work to rebuild a strong marriage culture. In the first book to respond to the Supreme Court's decision on same-sex marriage, Ryan Anderson draws on the best philosophy and social science to explain what marriage is, why it matters for public policy, and the consequences of its legal redefinition. Attacks on religious liberty--predicated on the bogus equation of opposition to same-sex marriage with racism--have already begun, and modest efforts in Indiana and other states to protect believers' rights have met with hysterics from media and corporate elites. Anderson tells the stories of innocent citizens who have been coerced and penalized by the government and offers a strategy to protect the natural right of religious liberty. Anderson reports on the latest research on same-sex parenting, filling it out with the testimony of children raised by gays and lesbians. He closes with a comprehensive roadmap on how to rebuild a culture of marriage, with work to be done by everyone. The nation's leading defender of marriage in the media and on university campuses, Ryan Anderson has produced the must-read manual on where to go from here. There are reasonable and compelling arguments for the truth about marriage, but too many of our neighbors haven't heard them. Truth is never on "the wrong side of history," but we have to make the case. We will decide which side of history we are on.

Book The Sex Starved Marriage

Download or read book The Sex Starved Marriage written by Michele Weiner-Davis and published by Simon & Schuster Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Not tonight, darling, I've got a headache...' An estimated one in three couples suffer from problems associated with one partner having a higher libido than the other. Marriage therapist Michele Weiner Davis has written THE SEX-STARVED MARRIAGE to help couples come to terms with this problem. Weiner Davis shows you how to address pyschological factors like depression, poor body image and communication problems that affect sexual desire. With separate chapters for the spouse that's ready for action and the spouse that's ready for sleep, THE SEX-STARVED MARRIAGE will help you re-spark your passion and stop you fighting about sex. Weiner Davis is renowned for her straight-talking style and here she puts it to great use to let you know you're not alone in having marital sex problems. Bitterness or complacency about ho-hum sex can ruin a marriage, breaking the emotional tie of good sex.

Book The Woods and Flora of the Florida Keys Pinnatae

Download or read book The Woods and Flora of the Florida Keys Pinnatae written by Barrett N. Rock and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pinnatae; comprising six families of woody plants with pinnately compound leaves, is represented on the Florida Keys by at least 16 species. The taxonomic treatment of these families at the ordinal level has been inconsistent. The purpose of this study is to correlate the data derived from intensive study of the xylem anatomy of these 16 species with data from the literature concerning these and other members of the families involved, so that new insight might be gained concerning the taxonomic relationships among these families. This study indicates that the members of the Pinnatae are anatomically homogeneous. All members possess simple perforation plates, vessel elements having alternate intervascular pitting, fibrous elements with small slitlike simple to vestigially bordered pits, and apotracheal and paratracheal axial parenchyma, or both. Secretory structures, such as crystalliferous idioblasts, parenchymatous cells containing 'gum'; and intercellular canals, are of wide occurrence within the Pinnatae. In addition, many species possess septate fibers and axial parenchyma arranged in aggregate patterns, with banded arrangements being most frequent. There is no anatomical basis for the separation of families into distinct orders in my view. The only separation of families within the Pinnatae suggested by a syndrome of several unique characters, in addition to those common to all members, is the formation of an Anacardiaceae-Burseraceae complex. The members of the Pinnatae belong to a taxon corresponding well with Cronquist's Sapindales. Phylogenetically, the Pinnatae constitutes an advanced taxon, based on xylem anatomy.
