The correct answer to that question is foundational for receiving from God. Book Are We Bodies Or Souls

Download or read book Are We Bodies Or Souls written by Richard Swinburne and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are humans? What makes us who we are? Many think that we are just complicated machines, or animals that are different from machines only by being conscious. In Are We Bodies or Souls? Richard Swinburne comes to the defence of the soul and presents new philosophical arguments that are supported by modern neuroscience. When scientific advances enable neuroscientists to transplant a part of brain into a new body, he reasons, no matter how much we can find out about their brain activity or conscious experiences we will never know whether the resulting person is the same as before or somebody entirely new. Swinburne thus argues that we are immaterial souls sustained in existence by our brains. Sensations, thoughts, and intentions are conscious events in our souls that cause events in our brains. While scientists might discover some of the laws of nature that determine conscious events and brain events, each person's soul is an individual thing and this is what ultimately makes us who we are.

Download or read book Who Am I written by Dr. Juliet Tennison and published by Juliet Tennison. This book was released on with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover how to live a spiritual life instead of a soulish life. We are tripartite beings, having body, soul, and spirit. The spirit is conscious of God; the soul, of self; and the body, of the things of this world. In this relatable treatise, backed by her own experience, author Juliet Tennison describes how to avoid war within ourselves as she examines the spirit, soul, and body and unpacks scriptural truths about spiritual versus carnal living. God created us for love and to have an intimate relationship with Him. We will never understand who we are until we see ourselves as God sees us. In the Garden of Eden, man had perfect relationship with God, but after the Fall, sin separated man from Him. Adam and Eve hid from God because the soul had become self-conscious instead of God-conscious, and they could no longer enjoy walking in fellowship with a Holy God. We were created to love God and to love others, but our soul keeps us from ever achieving this purpose. We must lose our soul to love and we must seek God, who is love. God created us to live a supernatural life by the power of the Holy Spirit. Our brain, our will, and our emotions, which make up our soul, are natural. The body we walk in is natural. The soul and the spirit are so close to one another that the two require the word of God to divide them, to separate them from each other: “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).So many of us practice religion without relationship. This is “churchianity”—we attend church but have no relationship with Jesus Christ. We pray for forgiveness without repenting our sins. Repentance means to stop doing our will and to start doing God’s Will. We struggle in our walk with God because we fail to differentiate between our soul and our spirit; we substitute the thoughts or emotions of the soul for the works of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit can only take residence in our spirit. It is in our spirit that we worship, fellowship and stay connected to God for “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:24.The knowledge of God is not some generic idea that He exists “up there.” It involves an intimate acquaintance with His character and actions. God’s love is manifested in His Son Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. He has placed His Spirit within His adopted children, giving us a heart to love Him, a mind to know Him, and a will to obey Him. The salvation which comes from God means being completely delivered from our self and being placed into perfect union with Him by the Power of the Holy Spirit. As fallen humans, we need a saviour to save us from our own wicked soul. Salvation is only understood in our spirit and only when the spirit is made alive by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The soul cannot comprehend this, because it is filled with its own pride; neither can the body, which is world-conscious and only understands the worldly things. Knowing these things, we learn to live a victorious spiritual life as the Holy Spirit lives in our spirit, and we crucify the detrimental desires of the soul and body.

Book On the Soul and Its Origin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Saint Augustine
  • Publisher : CreateSpace
  • Release : 2015-06-08
  • ISBN : 9781514267462
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book On the Soul and Its Origin written by Saint Augustine and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine, the man with upturned eye, with pen in the left hand, and a burning heart in the right (as he is usually represented), is a philosophical and theological genius of the first order, towering like a pyramid above his age, and looking down commandingly upon succeeding centuries. He had a mind uncommonly fertile and deep, bold and soaring; and with it, what is better, a heart full of Christian love and humility. He stands of right by the side of the greatest philosophers of antiquity and of modern times. We meet him alike on the broad highways and the narrow footpaths, on the giddy Alpine heights and in the awful depths of speculation, wherever philosophical thinkers before him or after him have trod. As a theologian he is facile princeps, at least surpassed by no church father, schoolman, or reformer. With royal munificence he scattered ideas in passing, which have set in mighty motion other lands and later times. He combined the creative power of Tertullian with the churchly spirit of Cyprian, the speculative intellect of the Greek church with the practical tact of the Latin. He was a Christian philosopher and a philosophical theologian to the full.

Book Lovely

Download or read book Lovely written by Amanda Martinez Beck and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All bodies are good bodies. Except fat bodies. At least that’s what our society tells us. According to the prevailing dogma, thin bodies are good; fat bodies are bad. In fact, any body that fails to measure up to society’s standards of perfection is bad. The perfect face has no blemishes, the perfect belly has no love handles, and the perfect skin has no wrinkles or stretch marks. According to this standard of flawlessness, a good body can have no illness, no disability, and no inadequacy. Our cultural understanding of good bodies makes most of us feel like hopeless failures. This is not what our loving God wants for us. In Lovely, size-dignity activist and self-proclaimed “fat girl” Amanda Martinez Beck talks openly about the purpose of bodies, what makes a body good, and the need to reframe the way we think and speak about our own bodies and the bodies of the people around us. Much more than a “self-image” read, Lovely will retrain you to think about your whole self — body and soul — in terms of mercy, kindness, and wonder rather than criticism, failure, and self-loathing. Don’t let the scale, the mirror, your interior critic, or the world around you keep you trapped in lies. All bodies are good bodies, including yours.
