Book Pacific Missionary George Brown 1835 1917

Download or read book Pacific Missionary George Brown 1835 1917 written by Margaret Reeson and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Brown (1835-1917) was many things during his long life; leader in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Australasia, explorer, linguist, political activist, apologist for the missionary enterprise, amateur anthropologist, writer, constant traveller, collector of artefacts, photographer and stirrer. He saw himself, at heart, as a missionary. The islands of the Pacific Ocean were the scene of his endeavours, with extended periods lived in Samoa and the New Britain region of todays Papua New Guinea, followed by repeated visits to Tonga, Fiji, the Milne Bay region of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. It could be argued that while he was a missionary in the Pacific region he was not a pacific missionary. Brown gained unwanted notoriety for involvement in a violent confrontation at one point in his career, and lived through conflict in many contexts but he also frequently worked as a peace maker. Policies he helped shape on issues such as church union, indigenous leadership, representation by lay people and a wider role for women continue to influence Uniting Church in Australia and churches in the Pacific region. His name is still remembered with honour in several parts of the Pacific. Browns marriage to Sarah Lydia Wallis, daughter of pioneer missionaries to New Zealand, was long and rich. Each strengthened the other and they stand side by side in this account.

Book American Catholics and the Church of Tomorrow

Download or read book American Catholics and the Church of Tomorrow written by Catherine R. Osborne and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-twentieth century, American Catholic churches began to shed the ubiquitous spires, stained glass, and gargoyles of their European forebears, turning instead toward startling and more angular structures of steel, plate glass, and concrete. But how did an institution like the Catholic Church, so often seen as steeped in inflexible traditions, come to welcome this modernist trend? Catherine R. Osborne’s innovative new book finds the answer: the alignment between postwar advancements in technology and design and evolutionary thought within the burgeoning American Catholic community. A new, visibly contemporary approach to design, church leaders thought, could lead to the rebirth of the church community of the future. As Osborne explains, the engineering breakthroughs that made modernist churches feasible themselves raised questions that were, for many Catholics, fundamentally theological. Couldn’t technological improvements engender worship spaces that better reflected God's presence in the contemporary world? Detailing the social, architectural, and theological movements that made modern churches possible, American Catholics and the Churches of Tomorrow breaks important new ground in the history of American Catholicism, and also presents new lines of thought for scholars attracted to modern architectural and urban history.

Book Music in Twentieth Century Oxford New Directions

Download or read book Music in Twentieth Century Oxford New Directions written by Robin Darwall-Smith and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-04-18 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book length study of musical education and culture in twentieth century Oxford. Music has always played a central role in the life of Oxford, both in the city and the university, whether through the great collegiate choral foundations, the many amateur choirs and instrumentalists, or the professional musicians regularly drawn to perform there. Oxford, with its collegiate system and its centuries-long tradition of musical activity, therefore presents a distinctive and multi-layered picture of the role of music in urban culture and university life. While college and university life dominate the volume, the collection also draws attention to the city's musical life, underlining music's unique ability to link 'town and gown'. Volume chapters tackle varied subjects such the Oxford Bach Choir, music in the city churches and the major choral foundations. The volume also tells the story of the development of the University's Music Faculty, music in the women's colleges, and the University Opera Club. Special attention is given to prominent Oxford composers, including Edmund Rubbra, Kenneth Leighton and Robert Saxton. The University College Musical Society and the Oxford and Cambridge Musical Club, which served as a kind of laboratory for such significant figures as Ralph Vaughan Williams and Walford Davies, also feature prominently. The volume will be indispensable reading for scholars and students of music in twentieth-century Britain, as well as those interested more generally in the history of Oxford's thriving cultural life in the university, its colleges and the city.
