Download or read book Human Population written by Richard P. Cincotta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-02-08 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume the dynamic patterns of human density and distribution are examined in relation to the viability of native species and the integrity of their habitats. Social, biological, and earth scientists describe their models, outline their conclusions from field studies, and review the contributions of other scientists whose work is essential to this field. The book starts with general theories and broad empirical relationships that help explain dramatic changes in the patterns of the occurrence of species, changes that have developed in parallel with human population growth, migration and settlement. In the following chapters specific biomes and ecosystems are highlighted as the context for human interactions with other species. A discussion of the key themes and findings covered rounds out the volume. All in all, the work presents our species, Homo sapiens, as what we truly have been and will likely remain—an influential, and often the most influential, constituent in nearly every major ecosystem on Earth.

Download or read book Communities in Action written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, some populations suffer from far greater disparities in health than others. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.
Download or read book Statistical Literacy at School written by Jane M. Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals the development of students' understanding of statistical literacy. It provides a way to "see" student thinking and gives readers a deeper sense of how students think about important statistical topics. Intended as a complement to curriculum documents and textbook series, it is consistent with the current principles and standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The term "statistical literacy" is used to emphasize that the purpose of the school curriculum should not be to turn out statisticians but to prepare statistically literate school graduates who are prepared to participate in social decision making. Based on ten years of research--with reference to other significant research as appropriate--the book looks at students' thinking in relation to tasks based on sampling, graphical representations, averages, chance, beginning inference, and variation, which are essential to later work in formal statistics. For those students who do not proceed to formal study, as well as those who do, these concepts provide a basis for decision making or questioning when presented with claims based on data in societal settings. Statistical Literacy at School: Growth and Goals: *establishes an overall framework for statistical literacy in terms of both the links to specific school curricula and the wider appreciation of contexts within which chance and data-handling ideas are applied; *demonstrates, within this framework, that there are many connections among specific ideas and constructs; *provides tasks, adaptable for classroom or assessment use, that are appropriate for the goals of statistical literacy; *presents extensive examples of student performance on the tasks, illustrating hierarchies of achievement, to assist in monitoring gains and meeting the goals of statistical literacy; and *includes a summary of analysis of survey data that suggests a developmental hierarchy for students over the years of schooling with respect to the goal of statistical literacy. Statistical Literacy at School: Growth and Goals is directed to researchers, curriculum developers, professionals, and students in mathematics education as well those across the curriculum who are interested in students' cognitive development within the field; to teachers who want to focus on the concepts involved in statistical literacy without the use of formal statistical techniques; and to statisticians who are interested in the development of student understanding before students are exposed to the formal study of statistics.
Download or read book Reading Specialists and Literacy Coaches in the Real World written by Brenda A. Shearer and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2018-07-23 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now more than ever, the roles and responsibilities of today’s literacy professionals are expanding. Many recent developments require a closer look at the changing careers of reading specialists, coaches, and administrators leading to an emphasis on increased collaboration and coaching, integration of standards, and student improvement initiatives. Both scholarly and practical, Reading Specialists and Literacy Coaches in the Real World provides the support and guidance both literacy and content area teachers need. The learning goals and outcomes in each chapter are aligned with ILA’s Standards for the Preparation of Literacy Professionals 2017, providing opportunities for group inquiry and new perspectives on professional learning. The authors examine the historical, political, and social forces that shape evidence-based practice and incorporate significant developments in intervention, assessment, and adolescent literacy. Their impact on instruction and the needs of students are studied in conjunction with RtI/MTSS programs, progress monitoring and differentiation, instructional technologies related to twenty-first century literacies, updated information about effective academic language instruction for English learners, and a moral imperative for fostering equity, social justice, and global perspectives. The Fourth Edition also provides Resource Materials to support the text, giving it a great deal of flexibility to explore projects for portfolios and self-assessment. In the real world, as learners among learners, literacy professionals use their experiences and voices for advocacy to help prepare students for success in their lives and careers.
