Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Slaveholder's Daughter The life of the great landowners and slaveholders resembled that of the old feudal lords. The overseer stood between the master and the slave in matters of detail. He conducted the local business of the planta tion, managed the negroes, and was the possessor of almost unlimited power when the less serious-minded planter preferred his pleasures to his duties. The mid dle class carried on the concerns of commerce and the trades incident to a vast agricultural area, and were the men of affairs in its churches and municipalities. The third class constituted a yeomanry, - small farmers Who, for the most part, preempted homesteads on the poorer lands, sometimes owning a few slaves, and who lived in a world of their own, -the westward drift from the Atlantic seaboard and the Blue Ridge mountains, with an inherited tone of life that defied change until the public school, of post-bellum origin, began its syste matic inroads on the new generation. Book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass

Download or read book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass written by Frederick Douglass and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-12 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave is a memoir written in 1845 by a former slave who went on to become a famous orator. Eleven chapters long, it chronicles Douglass's life, which was characterized by a will to become free. Douglass recalls his life in factual detail but also spends time undermining the logic and legacy of slavery with an expository style, demonstrating that it belongs in the category of a moral crime.Douglass starts his memoir by conveying that he does not know his birthday; instead, he chose a date for himself: February 14, 1818 (making him roughly twenty-seven years old at the time of the memoir). His mother passed away in his early childhood. Because he was so young, he finds it difficult to remember her, knowing also that mothers who were slaves are rarely given time with their children. Still, he recalls a few times at night when she was able to visit him. Douglass hypothesizes that his father is the slave owner who owned his mother and him. As a young boy, he remembers his aunt Hester being whipped for an unknown minor transgression. Douglass explains many features of the cruel relationship between slaves and their owners. Among these features are the behavioral norms imposed on slaves while in front of their masters. Douglass explains fear is the primary mechanism for keeping the slaves from rebelling, asserting that the fear is grounded in trauma from horrible violence inflicted on them historically. When Douglass is about ten, his owner, Master Anthony, dies, leaving his estate to be divided between his son and daughter. The slaves are given monetary values as if they are farm animals, upsetting Douglass more than ever before. He remembers this being a formative moment when he began to question the reality of slavery.Next, Douglass goes to live under a new mistress, Mrs. Sophia Auld, the daughter of Master Anthony. He says that had he not been moved into this second life, he would still be a slave and would probably never get an opportunity to be free. The move causes Douglass to feel hope for his future. However, though Mrs. Auld is initially very kind, she turns malevolent over time. She helps Douglass learn the alphabet and how to construct simple words. When Hugh Auld discovers this, he is outraged, saying that if slaves knew how to read, they would no longer be good slaves because they would be able to reflect on their lives and fall into endless melancholy. When Douglass hears this, he has the insight that reading is extremely valuable, opening up a world of future possibilities. He tries to read and absorb as much knowledge as possible. Sometimes, his new skill does, indeed, cause him pain. As he learns, he discovers the word abolition and resolves to escape to the North where slavery has been abolished. He learns to write and read fluently as he labors for the Aulds. Passing through a few more owners thereafter, Douglass eventually is sent to St. Michaels to work for Hugh Auld. Here, he regrets having been afraid to run away. However, he realizes that he has moved further northeast, bringing him closer to the North, his ultimate destination. During his tenure at St. Michaels, he is treated brutally and sometimes starved. He is sent to work for Mr. Covey for a year as part of a lending agreement between the two masters, and considers himself fortunate because he is better fed there. However, Mr. Covey has a reputation as a "negro-breaker," a term that means he delights in breaking down the resolve of slaves. At Mr. Covey's, Douglass faces the worst abuse of his life. He is whipped severely almost every week. On one occasion, he bites Covey's hand in self-defense. Once after being beaten to the point of exhaustion, he collapses in a field. His owner responds by beating him again. Douglass complains to Auld, who sends him back anyway. Several days later, Covey tries to bind Douglass in order to abuse him. Douglass manages to win the fight...

Book excerpt: The sentimental antislavery novel Ida May appeared so like its predecessor in the genre, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, that for the month of November 1854, reviewers looked for Harriet Beecher Stowe’s hand in the narrative. Ida May explores the “possibility” of white slavery from the safety of an exciting, romantic narrative: Ida is kidnapped on her fifth birthday from her white middle-class family in Pennsylvania, stained brown, and sold into slavery in the South. Traumatic amnesia brought about by a severe beating keeps her from knowing who she really is, until after five years in slavery her identity is recovered in a dramatic flash of recognition. To the abolitionists of the period, fictional narratives of white enslaved children offered a crucial possibility: to unsettle the legitimacy of a race-based system of enslavement. The historical appendices to this Broadview Edition provide context for the novel’s reception, Pike’s racial politics, and the “problem” of white slavery in nineteenth-century abolitionist writing.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our World:"Conspicuous among these cabins are two presenting a much neater appearance: they are brightly whitewashed, and the little windows are decorated with flowering plants. Within them there is an air of simple neatness and freshness we have seldom seen surpassed; the meagre furniture seems to have been arranged by some careful hand, and presents an air of cheerfulness in strange contrast with the dingy cabins around. In each there is a neatly arranged bed, spread over with a white cover, and by its side a piece of soft carpet. It is from these we shall draw forth the principal characters of our story. Upon a brick foundation, about twenty rods from the right wing of the mansion, stands a wood cottage, occupied by the overseer. Mr. John Ryan not being blessed with family, when Marston is not honored with company takes his meals at the mansion.

Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XI EVOLUTION OF SOUTHERN WOMEN The only conclusive evidence of a man's sincerity is that he gives himself for a principle. Words, money, all things else are comparatively easy to give away; but when a man makes a gift of his daily life and practice, it is plain that the truth, whatever it may be, has taken possession of him.--Lowell. During the Southern Exposition in 1884, my second trip was made to New Orleans. The world had changed considerably to me since my first visit: my eyes had grown accustomed to larger visions. Since beginning to teach, every question that related to the attainments and possibilities of women was of intense interest to me; but especially her developed power of bread-winning. Julia Ward Howe was lecturing in the city. She was the first woman I had ever heard speak before a public audience, except students on a school rostrum. Never can the eagerness be forgotten with which my feet hastened to the hall where she was to be heard, nor the absorption with which my listening ears drew in every word, nor the critical attention that was given to every detail of the speaker's appearance, from the lace cap that rested on her brainy head down to the toes of her common-sense boots. She spoke on "Woman's Work." As she talked brilliantly and fluently my enchantment grew. The remark that she had visited several foreign countries and had addressed the women of each in their own tongue particularly impressed me. How far away those strange lands seemed! How wonderful to be looking at a person who had really seen them! Going to Europe had been the dream of my life, and here was a woman who had actually been there! For many years an earnest desire had possessed me to behold a genuinely strong-minded woman, --one of the...
