Book excerpt: The story centres around Dikeledi, a young girl in the "independent" homeland of Transkei, one of the "Bantustans" of the former apartheid era in South Africa. The Sotho tribe is in the minority in this area and culture still plays a very big role in the villages. Education is not a priority for most of the people there, so when Dikeledi meets and falls in love with a youth in high school, she is confused by his ambitions to study further and go to university. They marry despite the fact that her husband's mother hates her, mainly due to the fact that Dikeledi is not traditionally considered beautiful, comes from a poor home and her family is not known in the village, neither is she a relative. Apartheid laws ensure that, even when Dikeledi's husband wants to take her with him to Johannesburg, without valid documents, it is near impossible for her to live with him, and she has to endure her mother-in-law's abuse.

Book Our Life Is A Tale That Is Told

Download or read book Our Life Is A Tale That Is Told written by Charlene Maxfield and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2024-01-24 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all tell a story as we walk through the pages and chapters of our lives. Mine began in Farmersville, a small Texas town outside of Dallas. In those early days of my youth, I attended the great tent revivals of the 1950s. The atmosphere in these services was electrifying as the glory of God fell upon the place. I witnessed unbelievable miracles of healing; some happened in my own family. These experiences caused a longing to know God more intensely. I wanted to be used by Him and obey His every command, no matter how out of the ordinary His directions might be. Each chapter of this book is filled with life lessons to help build your faith and encourage you to do what God asks of you. As you do, watch Him open supernatural doors that men cannot open or close. Travel with me to a hospital room where a young man lies in a coma on his deathbed. Watch God bring him back to life. Leaving pride behind, stand up with me in a busy restaurant and get the attention of all present. Speak a word of encouragement to a military troupe about to leave for war. Follow my footsteps through the sands of Egypt and see what Joseph saw. Stand in awe as you explore the ancient archeological ruins of Petra in southern Jordan. Travel with me to the land of biblical Israel and walk where Jesus walked. Go with me to Italy and stroll through the frozen city of Pompeii, buried under the volcanic ashes of Vesuvius. Experience the magnificence of France, England, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and many more. Let's go to the busy streets of New York City, home of Lady Liberty. Dine with me and with the rich and famous in Hollywood. In every place, God is always present with a lesson to be learned. I have lived a colorful life, to say the least. Each chapter of my life is filled with events, which I hope will inspire you and build your faith as you travel down life's highways.

In this, the first anthology of nonfiction prose to explore this issue in depth, editor Steven Shepherd has collected a diverse and invariably compelling group of narratives about sons and their fathers. "Fourteen excellent essays by some of our best writers," says Anne Morris of the Austin American-Statesman. Among the contributors: James Baldwin, who reflects in his classic "Notes of a Native Son," on the father he barely knew, "partly because we shared, in our different fashions, the vice of stubborn pride." The brothers Geoffrey and Tobias Wolff, who write of their father from dramatically different perspectives. A second-generation undertaker, Thomas Lynch, who writes lovingly of burying his father. And the acclaimed scholar of African-American culture, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., who grew up with a father who "was not a race man," yet their arguments were vital to the son's education.

The details are too lengthy, but essentially I had a crisis of faith. It was hard and frightening, but I thank God I wasn’t swallowed up by the storm. During a storm, it is natural to panic. The natural response to the storms of life is doubt and fear but Jesus tells us the response to storms should be trust, because He is there to still the waves. With this book in your hand, you will learn about fifteen principles to traverse through and triumph the storms of life and certain factors that can cause one to stay in a prolonged storm and God’s role in causing these storms.

Download or read book The Eye of the Leopard written by Henning Mankell and published by New Press/ORIM. This book was released on 2011-07-26 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the acclaimed Kurt Wallander series: A thrilling story set in Sweden and Zambia told with “heart-stopping tension” (Entertainment Weekly). Interweaving past and present, The Eye of the Leopard draws on bestselling author Henning Mankell’s deep understanding of both Scandinavia and post-colonial Africa. Hans Olofson arrives in Zambia in the 1970s, at the start of its independence. There, he hopes to fulfill the missionary dream of a boyhood friend who was unable to make the journey. But he is also there to flee the traumas of his motherless childhood in provincial Sweden: his father’s alcoholism, his best friend’s terrible accident, his fear of an ordinary and stifled fate. Africa is a terrible shock, yet he stays and makes it his home. In all his years as a mzungu, a wealthy white man among native blacks, he never comes to fully understand his adoptive home, or his precarious place in it. Rumors of an underground army of revolutionaries wearing leopard skins warn him that the fragile truce between blacks and whites is in danger of rupturing. Alternating between Hans’s years in Africa and those of his youth in Sweden, The Eye of the Leopard is a bravura achievement and a study in contrasts—black and white, poor and wealthy, Africa and Europe—both sinister and elegiac. “Mankell’s novels are a joy.” —USA Today “A fascinating novel . . . [the] prose is powerful, and the narrative of The Eye of the Leopard is profound.” —Bookreporter.com “A thought-provoking, multilayered novel whose themes will challenge and linger.” —The Courier Mail “Mankell is a master of atmosphere and suspense.” —Los Angeles Times “Mankell’s novels are the best Swedish export since flatpack furniture.” —The Guardian “Beautiful, heartbreaking, yet ultimately hopeful . . . A powerful exploration of the stresses and challenges of freedom.” —Booklist, starred review

This book was released on 2013-04-05 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories were written for intelligent middle school children, who have a sense of sophisticated humor and who like adventure. There are elements of surprise and adventure with much scientific materials, some of which is true and some not true. The reader should be motivated to find out for themselves. For example, (1) there was certainly a massive eruption in Krakatoa (the survival of the Viven beetle is entirely fictitious) and (2) there is a Yucca plant pollinated by a moth.

Download or read book Diva Delaney Mysteries Bundle 1 Books 1 3 written by Anni Jayde and published by Seize The Night Publishing Agency. This book was released on with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bundle contains books 1 - 3 of the Diva Delaney Mysteries. Is Murder By Candlestick Still A Thing?: Diva Delaney is the only normal living among a family of witches in Hollowood Grove. Although ‘normal’ can hardly be applied to a psychic medium. As if her life as the only non-magical person in the Delaney Coven isn’t hard enough, she’s the prime suspect in Edward Creighton’s murder. Disliked by most, the only people who will miss the grumpy old warlock are the members of the Creighton Coven. Their hot local sheriff, Drew McTavish, is Diva’s ex, sort of. They dated three times a couple of years ago before the mysterious curse someone put on her kicked in and punished him for kissing her. He doesn’t believe in the mystical and he’s just waiting to find proof of her involvement in the murder so he can lock her away. The Creighton Coven want justice for the death of one of their own. Haydn, Edward’s great-nephew, has returned from England to take over running the Creighton Bookstore. Wickedly handsome and powerfully dangerous, he has his sights set on Diva and not in a good way. If she doesn’t find the real killer, she could end up paying the price for a murder she didn’t commit. Not even her four ghostly friends will be able to save her if the warlock decides she’s guilty. Voodoo Hoodoo Is Complete Doodoo: Diva Delaney finds herself embroiled in a new mystery when she is asked to search for a missing witch. She is a psychic medium, not a private investigator, but she agrees as a favor to her Aunt Isabel. She soon discovers that more than one witch has been kidnapped from the nearby town of Verity Falls. With the aid of some local ghosts, Diva needs to get to the bottom of this latest puzzle. She will need to call on magical assistance from her cousins and even one of her enemies. Haydn Creighton has been her secret obsession since she was a kid. Even though he’s engaged to a snooty and slightly unstable British witch, Diva can’t get him out of her mind. She already owes him a favor for accepting his help. After this latest mess, she could be digging herself in too deep to extricate herself. Just to complicate things, Diva’s cousin, Courtney, has decided she wants to marry Drew McTavish. The sheriff has no idea the lengths magical folk will go to in order to get what they want. He still firmly believes the supernatural isn’t real and he isn’t at all prepared for what will soon be coming. Upsetting A Poltergeist Never Ends Well: Framed for another murder that she didn’t commit, Diva Delaney once again finds herself neck deep in trouble. This time, she knows who is behind the crime, but proving it isn’t going to be easy when the evidence against her is so overwhelming. She will have to rely on the father of her high school nemesis to get her out of jail. Luckily, Roger Mayhew owes her one, thanks to Haydn Creighton’s blackmailing skills. As if Diva doesn’t already have enough problems, Nina Rivers warns her that she’s in danger. The witch might only have moderate power, but one thing she excels at is hunches. Her intuition is never wrong and she senses Diva is in extreme peril. Someone out there means her harm, but she doesn’t know who it is, or when they’ll strike. Personally, Diva suspects the danger will most likely come from Gillian Farque. Haydn’s fiancé already has it in for her. Thanks to the damage Diva did to her sports car, she’s going to make her pay big time. Diva’s cousins, Eve and Courtney are having problems of their own. Eve’s is a direct result of accompanying Diva on one of her jobs. Courtney’s is self-inflicted. Her decision to attempt to force the handsome sheriff to fall for her has repercussions she didn’t plan on. There’s a reason why conjurers are forbidden from casting magic on normals. Doing so often backfires on the caster horribly. cozy paranormal mystery, cozy mystery, witches wizards warlocks, supernatural occult paranormal, female sleuth, spells magic, ghosts spirits phantoms poltergeist

Book Chasing a God You Don t Want to Catch

Download or read book Chasing a God You Don t Want to Catch written by Darren Wilson and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We Are So Quick to Say We Want “More” of God, but Is That Really True? As strange as it may sound, the most misunderstood, misrepresented, and potentially the most feared person in Christianity may very well be God Himself. Even seasoned Christians often view God as frightening, untrustworthy, and distant. But nothing could be further from the truth. Author and filmmaker Darren Wilson takes a funny yet poignant romp through Scripture, revealing a long-time Christian’s hang-ups and fears of a God he was supposed to love. Wilson looks at questions such as: Is God selfish, silent, distant, and constantly disappointed in you? How do you love someone you can’t see and who has the power to punish you at any moment? How can a loving God throw people into hell simply for not believing in Him? Wilson encourages readers to be honest with themselves and with God. He challenges us to face the things many Christians struggle with but are too afraid to talk about because everyone else seems to have this faith thing figured out. He believes God isn’t afraid of our questions, doubts, fears, or even our anger. The secret to peace and friendship with God lies in understanding who He really is.
