Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Total Christianity When these addresses were given in the First Congregational Church of Oakland, California, the three hymns sung at each service were selected from hymn writers belonging to the particular denomination to be considered that evening. It is an interesting and significant fact for the cause of Christian unity that these many hymns, written by members of these different communions, were all contained in the "Plymouth Hymnal" in use in the church where the addresses were given - as indeed they would be found in almost any standard hymnal. Doctrinal discussions may divide us, but we all come together in prayer and in praise. The list of these various hymns may be of interest to those who read this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christianity of Christ But, alas, the roots of the tree penetrated to the fountain, and the whole was tainted, and now the spring is neglected and its waters forsaken. So men have often spoiled the truth as it is in Jesus by attempting to improve it. Instead of accepting it as it is in all its native plainness, undoctored and un alloyed, they have sought to subtract from it here and add to it there, and thus have either robbed it of its strength and glory, or turned thirsty souls from it altogether. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Christian Classics, Vol. 1 of 4: Readings From the Best Divines, With Notices Biographical and Critical True, our excursions in these old paths must be very short; and it is not unlikely that treasures over which we have rejoiced as those that find great spoil may be regarded by others as great rubbish. It is even too possible that, on returning to well-remembered wonders, we may find the spell broken - the beryl converted into bottle-glass - the hoard of coins replaced by fairy money. But, like him whose Childhood's home was beside some storied ruin, and who still finds a pleasure in revisit ing the ancient nooks and crannies of'what once was half his world - in screwing up the vertiginous stairs - in basking on the mossy pavement of the roofless hall - and in rousing up the echo which gave back the shouts of himself and his brothers a long, long time ago 3 a benevolent fellow-traveller will forgive the enthusiasm with which he cannot entirely sympathise. But two fears come over us. Our first, dear reader, is a fear that you will not have patience for our introductory number. And doubtless it is dry. But to make our survey of English theology anywise complete, there Is need for these origines sacrce. The narrow keep or little sanctuary, which has sub sequently expanded into a baronial castle or lofty minster, may be insignificant in itself, but it has an interest of its own. The lays and. Legends which formed the favourite lore of early English churchmen may not have much intrinsic importance; but every one will regard with mingled curiosity and affection the nucleus round which has arisen the mightiest fabric of Christian literature which any modern nation has produced. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resurrection of Christ a Part of Christianity We drop the form of address to unbelievers, to say, in conclusion, that we would not be understood to disparage the existing documentary evidence of Christ's resurrec tion. Any one who takes it up in the right spirit will be struck with its abundance, its clearness, and naturalness, and beauty. We believe that it will be to the end of time, an independent source of belief in the resurrection, and through this in all the supernatural of Christianity. It were all that is necessary if it contained but one sentence declaring unequivocally that Jesus rose. But without even that, we have tried to show that the continued exist ence of Christianity would carry, with it a belief in the resurrection. Now when we see and feel that this fact is built into the very framework of our faith, just as a con stitutional article is incorporated into the framework of a government, then we can go back to those early testi190 T he Resurrection of Christ. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus, Concerning the Christian Life He was right. Some men do not give religion any place in their lives. They think they can do without it. They have other aims which they consider higher, or to which they give more care ful attention. Others seek religion and hold it in esteem, but they do not make it the principal thing. They think more of something else. Religion has a place in their lives, as they suppose, but it is a low place, an Obscure corner. It does not come to the front. But those who give religion no place or a low place in their lives not only act contrary to their own reason and higher impulses, but they violate the Whole spirit of revelation, and especially the definite and repeated teachings and commands and expostula tions of Jesus. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in the New Age "It is no small prudence to keep silence in an evil time," says Thomas a Kempis; and though the dark night is past and the day of victory has come, silence still commends itself as a counsel of discretion. For this is a time of obscure and tangled issues, of the seething turmoil of new and dying tendencies and the blind struggle of unborn and half-born impulses. What we took to be an ordered map has resolved itself into a chaos of crossing lines, and the only thing to be asserted with confidence about a complex of life and thought so full of intricacy and contradiction is its utter impredicability. Book The Spread of Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spread of Christianity Classic Reprint written by Paul Hutchinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spread of Christianity OF the making of church histories there seems to be no end, nor of the discovery of new facts that have a bearing on the story. The only reason for a new text, in view of the adequate volumes that already exist, is the hope of winning the interest of a new group - in this case, pupils in the eleventh grade of the American school. In writing for this group (which is generally found in the sophomore or junior years of the high school) no effort has been made to mention all the facts, or even all the names, that must be included in any complete record of the Christian enterprise. It is conceivable that some church historians, chancing on this book, might be overwhelmed by its omissions. To any such it can only be said that the omissions have been deliberate. The attempt has been to throw into bold relief the significant developments in Christian history since the days of Constantine. Christianity as a growing power is the theme, with the hope that young Christians may find some pride in belonging to a body that, with all its long traditions, lives ever on the move. Likewise, the Spread of Christianity has been presented, not as some unique phenomenon in a water-tight compartment of its own, but as an integral part of the movement of all history. The repetition of much that is included in the usual school course seems justified if this branch of history is to be seen in its proper frame. Book The Doctrine of the Ages Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Doctrine of the Ages Classic Reprint written by Robert Cameron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Ages The substance of this book, in all of its essen tial features, was carefully read by the late Dr. A. J. Gordon, in manuscript. He urged its immediate publication, and consented to write an introduction to its pages. Before the closing chapters were completed he had passed away from his useful life. On this account his name has no connection with the book, further than this grateful acknowledgment of his encouraging words. The learned Dr. Harnack, in his History of Dogma, when speaking of the Christian's faith in God as the father of Jesus Christ, makes the following comprehensive statement: So far as this God is believed to be the omnipotent Lord of heaven and earth, the Christian religion includes a knowledge of God, of the world, and of the purpose of created things. These three spheres, then, are the proper objects of our contemplation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Early Days of Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Early Days of Christianity Classic Reprint written by Frederick C. Grant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Days of Christianity The world in which Christianity arose was almost entirely under the dominion of the Roman Empire. From about the middle of the third century before Christ, as a result of the wars with Carthage, the Roman rule had been gradually extended beyond the borders of Italy until the whole Mediterranean coast was under its control. At the death of the Emperor Augustus (14 A. D.) this vast empire, divided into provinces, stretched from the Atlantic Ocean on the west to the Euphrates River, the Arabian Desert, and the shores of the Red Sea on the east: and from the English Channel, the Rhine and the Danube Rivers and the Black Sea on the north to the Sahara Desert and the first cataract of the Nile on the South. The rest of the known world was made up of the uncivilized or savage tribes living north of the Rhine and the Danube, the nomads of the deserts south and east, the fierce and turbulent Parthians beyond the Euphrates, the inde pendent kingdom oi Armenia, and the remote and little-known lands of Ethiopia, India, and China. Thus the world in which Christianity arose - the known and civilized world of the west - was almost completely under Roman dominion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of Christianity This course of lectures, delivered on Sunday even ings in the Meeting House of the Society for Ethical Culture during the winter of 1914, is a continuation of the series given in the preceding year and subse quently published under the title, The Life of Jesus in the Light of the Higher Criticism. The purpose of this sequel is to carry the story of the origin of Christianity on from the death of Jesus to the birth of the new religion, noting the precise part played in this process by the genius of Paul and the unique contribution made by the author of the Fourth Gospel in supplementing the Christology of the Apostle to the Gentiles with an account of the historic Jesus in terms they could understand. The first two lec tures relate to preliminary questions touching the formation of the New Testament as a collection of sacred books and the reliability of the record as a source of information on the development of religious thought and organization during the period under eon Sideration. We shall then see how, after the cruci fixion, the bereaved and despondent disciples came to themselves and under the inspiration of a great con viction concerning the immortality of their Master.
