This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide for tomorrow’s urban practitioner systematically explains fifteen best practices across three continents; it explores questions of broad interest for designing and planning the future of cities and regions. Key questions addressed are: Is simulation useful to explore the effects of different design, policy and planning strategies? Which approach will help manage the uncertainties of metropolitan areas both today and tomorrow ? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the different simulation practices for city leadership, public and private partnership, and citizen involvement? The book reviews computer models and media, socio-political initiatives, professional practices which help communicating the future effects of different design, political and planning strategies with a wide range of aims: from information, through consultation, towards active participation. These world best practices are considered according to four leading issues for urban and regional development, respectively Simulation, Scenario and Visioning, Government and Governance, and Scale. The book examines the approaches adopted technically and procedurally. The selected knowledge and the innovative tools used in each case study are among the most advanced and up-to-date in the professional and research fields. This volume successfully illustrates these innovative practices and methodologies in a straightforward and accessible way.

Book The Future of the Gulf Region

Download or read book The Future of the Gulf Region written by Arno Tausch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-09 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies values and attitudes in the Gulf region. In light of global power shifts, the threatening collapse of internal security in the West, and uncertainty about the current leadership vacuum in world society, this book explores a future leading role of the Gulf countries in such institutions as the G-20 and the OECD. Based on rigorous analysis of macro-level data and opinion surveys with relevance for the Gulf region, it analyzes the global macro-factors shaping the Gulf's future at a time of the global COVID-19 crisis and depression and rising global tensions. Starting with an empirical time series analysis of the long cycles of global politics and economics, it highlights the implications for the Gulf region. Offering a multivariate analysis of civil society values in the Gulf, the author analyzes value changes and attitudes on antisemitism, political Islam, internal security, democracy, and other issues of Arab politics. The partially optimistic conclusions of the study testify to the underestimated and incipient maturity of the Gulf’s civil society and strongly suggest that the Gulf's future is rather with the free societies of the West and not with a Neo-Ottoman Empire in whatever form. "Exceptional in scope and right up-to-the-minute in coverage" Brian M Pollins, Associate, Professor Emeritus, The Ohio State University. "An outstanding and topical book by an astute scholar of the MENA region" Professor Hussein Solomon, Academic Head of Department, Political Studies and Governance, University of the Free State, South Africa. "The most comprehensive and insightful study on the subject to date" Manfred B. Steger, Professor of Sociology, University of Hawai'i at Manoa and Global Professorial Fellow, Western Sydney University.

Book excerpt: This book presents some of the most important contributions made during the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR) 22nd Annual Conference, titled ’The Future of the Region: Oil Price Challenges’. It seeks to outline strategies to ensure stability in Arab countries by identifying some of the key security issues, set against the context of oil price challenges. Chapter 1 examines the concept of stability, as well as the factors that have caused instability in the region, and suggests strategies to ensure peace and security, which is vital for the region’s advancement. Chapter 2 reviews the role of the GCC countries in maintaining regional stability, with a focus on the Gulf states’ emerging prominence as perhaps the only Arab power able to withstand the turmoil that has struck the region following the decline of the traditional Arab powers. Chapter 3 looks at shifting alliances in the region and suggests strategies for avoiding conflict within a new geo-political reality. Within this context, GCC countries should draw on their considerable capabilities to achieve and sustain security in the Arabian Gulf region, working to create a regional power base able to maintain military and economic balance. Chapter 4 sheds light on the policies and interests of the major powers in relation to the region. The significant decline in oil prices, consequences of the so-called Arab Spring, the crisis in Yemen, emergence of Da’esh and increased Iranian hostilities have had a major impact, raising the concerns of countries all over the world. Ultimately, partnership with major powers, such as the US, can help Gulf countries ensure the region’s stability and advancement. Chapter 5 considers how American views toward political Islam and religious extremism were shaped during Donald Trump’s presidential election campaign. It raises serious concerns over the campaign’s rhetoric, which can be viewed as having politicized Islamic extremism in the US, contributing to polarization and confusion over the issue, with implications for American relations with Gulf nations. Chapter 6 focuses on the economic policies of oil-producing states, which are in urgent need of major modification. In order to adapt to falling oil prices, two main mechanisms are identified; the use of sovereign wealth funds and a decrease in government spending. Finally, Chapter 7 continues the discussion of oil price challenges, reviewing the key issues in international oil markets, upon which the policies of oil-producing countries are based. Direct competition between oil producers in the region and American producers of shale oil is anticipated, especially during Trump’s tenure. The chapter’s conclusion is that for the foreseeable future, as GCC states diversify their economies, the oil sector will continue to play an essential role.

Book The Belt and Road Initiative and the Future of Regional Order in the Indo Pacific

Download or read book The Belt and Road Initiative and the Future of Regional Order in the Indo Pacific written by Michael Clarke and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is emerging as a vital lynch-pin in China's efforts to establish a maritime and continental zone of influence in the Indo-Pacific region. The Belt and Road Initiative and the Future of Regional Order in the Indo-Pacific interrogates to what extent BRI represents an achievable vision of a China-centric order in Asia and explores its major security implications for the region. The contributions to this volume provide up-to-date analysis of the effect of BRI on the region's foreign policy and alliance patterns, its connection to geo-economics and domestic Chinese politics, and the policy responses of key Indo-Pacific actors. While acknowledging that BRI remains prey to a variety of internal and exogenous shocks, the contributors conclude that at the very least BRI will continue to disrupt the existing alignments of economic and strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific and that on this minimal basis BRI will likely be judged a success by China. For regional actors, however, the BRI simultaneously enhances choice while presenting strategic and economic risks of greater dependency on China - a dilemma intensified by the disruptive effects of the Trump administration on regional confidence in the longevity of American commitments and leadership.
