This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Presidents and Their Office, Including Parallel Lives of the Presidents of the People, of the United States and of Several Contemporaries, and a History of the Presidency No man ever excelled Lord Bacon in expressing a great thought in a few words: he says, "History makes men wise." In addition to making men wise, history contributes largely to their pleasure; and the study of history, like the practice of charity, should begin at home. To us, George Washington is of more importance than all the Old World Captains together from Nimrod to Kitchener. Thomas Jefferson more nearly concerns us than all transatlantic statesmen from Lycurgus to Lloyd-George. Whether we voted for him or not, William Howard Taft, our President, is of more interest to us than all the crowned heads of earth. Sensible men will welcome "Our Presidents and Their Office" as a timely and valuable contribution to our literature. The Presidency of this Republic is the greatest political office known among men. Whether merit or geographical location, whether luck or accident has elevated them to that exalted office - and in the elections of most of them there was something of each and all - they and their careers are well worth study. Book Presidents and Presidencies in American History 4 volumes

Download or read book Presidents and Presidencies in American History 4 volumes written by Jolyon P. Girard and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 1495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative encyclopedia explores the life and times of America's forty-five presidents—from the first administration to that of Donald Trump. Forty-five men have served as President of the United States since George Washington swore the oath of office in 1789 in New York City. Some have proved exceptional leaders, and others have not. Some have faced serious crises, both foreign and domestic. Franklin Roosevelt was elected to four terms, leading the country through a major economic depression and a world war, while one held the office for only a single month. Each, however, played a key role in the evolution of United States history. Each of their histories therefore remains a critical civics lesson to consider. This four-volume encyclopedia provides an expansive analysis of the life and times of each United States president in chronological order from George Washington to Donald Trump. Each chapter includes a timeline, a biographical sketch, a historical overview, and an analytical essay concerning the president and his presidency. Each also includes a substantial selection of related primary documents presenting important presidential speeches and correspondence. A suggested reading list for further study of each president rounds out each entry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Our Presidents: Complete Biographies of All the Presidents of the United States, From the Formation of the Government to the Present Time, Incidentally Embracing a History of the Country for More Than One Hundred Years In presenting to the public, in this work, the lives of the Presidents of the United States, the author has been actuated not only by the ordinary motives of the biographer and his torian, but also by an earnest desire to present to the youth of the land for their admiration, ambition and emulation the noblest examples of self-made manhood the world ever saw. Human history fails to present, since governments began, a. Succession of rulers who have so generally risen from humble positions, and, by the inherent and cultivated elements of true and noble manhood, reached such sublime heights in the records of individual achievement and greatness. In all those qualities through which they have improved their own condi tion and that of their fellow men, they outrank the noblest Roman patrician and the sublimest Grecian philosopher. Book Lives of the Presidents of the United States of America

Download or read book Lives of the Presidents of the United States of America written by John S. C. Abbott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Presidents of the United States of America: From Washington to the Present Time, Containing a Narrative of the Most Interesting Events in the Career of Each President; Thus Constituting a Graphic History of the United States There are few persons who can read this record of the Lives of the Presidents of the United States without the conviction, that there is no other nation which can present a consecutive series of seventeen rulers of equal excellence of character and administrative ability. Probably the least worthy of all our presidents would rank among the best of the kings whom the accident of birth has placed upon hereditary thrones; and not an individual has popular sufrage elevated to the presidential chair, whom one would think of ranking with those many royal monsters who have in turn disgraced all the courts of Europe. This record settles the question, that popular suffrage, in the choice of rulers, is a far safer reliance than hereditary descent. With us, the freedom of the press is so unlimited, and political partisanship so intense, that few persons have been able to take really an impartial view of the characters of those who have been by one party so inordinately lauded, and by the other so in temperately assailed. But, as we now dispassionately review the past, most readers will probably find many old prejudices dispelled. In writing these sketches, the author has endeavored to be thoroughly impartial, and to place himself in the position which the subject of the sketch occupied, so as to look from his stand-point upon the great questions which he was called to consider. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson were in political antagonism; but no man can read a true record of their lives, and not be convinced that both were inspired with the noblest zeal to promote the best interests of their country and of the human race. The writer has not thought that impartiality requires that he should refrain from a frank expression of his own views. Book excerpt: Now an epic documentary event on the HISTORY Channel! The illuminating, bestselling exploration on leadership from Pulitzer Prize–winning author and presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, and also the inspiration for the HISTORY Channel multipart series Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. “After five decades of magisterial output, Doris Kearns Goodwin leads the league of presidential historians” (USA TODAY). In her “inspiring” (The Christian Science Monitor) Leadership, Doris Kearns Goodwin draws upon the four presidents she has studied most closely—Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson (in civil rights)—to show how they recognized leadership qualities within themselves and were recognized as leaders by others. By looking back to their first entries into public life, we encounter them at a time when their paths were filled with confusion, fear, and hope. Leadership tells the story of how they all collided with dramatic reversals that disrupted their lives and threatened to shatter forever their ambitions. Nonetheless, they all emerged fitted to confront the contours and dilemmas of their times. At their best, all four were guided by a sense of moral purpose. At moments of great challenge, they were able to summon their talents to enlarge the opportunities and lives of others. Does the leader make the times or do the times make the leader? “If ever our nation needed a short course on presidential leadership, it is now” (The Seattle Times). This seminal work provides an accessible and essential road map for aspiring and established leaders in every field. In today’s polarized world, these stories of authentic leadership in times of apprehension and fracture take on a singular urgency. “Goodwin’s volume deserves much praise—it is insightful, readable, compelling: Her book arrives just in time” (The Boston Globe).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of the Present Candidates for President and Vice-President of the United States, Containing a Condensed and Impartial History of the Lives, Public Acts, and Political Views of the Present Candidates IN 1826, Mr. Bell, who had accumulated a moderate for tune, was induced to come forward from his retirement, as a candidate for Congress, in opposition to Felix Grundy, a n that was high in the annals of Kentucky and Tennessee, and is still referred to as one of the great names of the period in which he lived. He was an ardent friend of General Jackson, whose memorable canvass for the Presidency against John Quincy Adams was then progressing. He had long stood at the head of the bar as a profound jurist. He was recognized as an eminent statesman. The odds were greatly in his favor, for, in addition to his own vast reputation, he had the prestige of General Jackson's popularity to aid him. The canvass was protracted throughout the year, and was full of excitement; but Mr. Bell, then in the prime of life, full of energy, buoyant with hope, calm, deliberate, and determined, pursued it with untiring energy and the most marked vigor. In the face ofilre odds against him, in 1827, then in his 30th year, he was elected by a thousand majority, in a district where it had been thought there was no possi bility of his success. His course in Congress was so manly, so conservative, so consistent with the wishes of his constit neuts, and he had so firmly riveted himself in their affections, that for seven Congresses, or fourteen years, he continued to be re - elected.
