Book Finding Our Place in the Universe

Download or read book Finding Our Place in the Universe written by Helene Courtois and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An astrophysicist recounts how her team of researchers surfed the cosmos to map our local universe—and discovered the Laniakea supercluster, home of the Milky Way. You are here: on Earth, which is part of the solar system, which is in the Milky Way galaxy, which itself is within the extragalactic supercluster Laniakea. And how can we pinpoint our location so precisely? For 20 years, astrophysicist Hélène Courtois surfed the cosmos with international teams of researchers, working to map our local universe. In this book, Courtois describes this quest and the discovery of our home supercluster. Courtois explains that Laniakea (which means “immense heaven” in Hawaiian) is the largest galaxy structure known to which we belong; it is huge, almost too large to comprehend—about 500 million light-years in diameter. It contains about 100,000 large galaxies like our own, and a million smaller ones. Writing accessibly for nonspecialists, Courtois describes the visualization and analysis that allowed her team to map such large structures of the universe. She highlights the work of individual researchers, including portraits of several exceptional women astrophysicists—presenting another side of astronomy. Key ideas are highlighted in text insets; illustrations accompany the main text. The French edition of this book was named the Best Astronomy Book of 2017 by the astronomy magazine Ciel et espace. For this MIT Press English-language edition, Courtois has added descriptions of discoveries made after Laniakea: the cosmic velocity web and the Dipole and Cold Spot repellers. An engaging account of one of the most important discoveries in astrophysics in recent years, her story is a tribute to teamwork and international collaboration.

Book Our Place in the Universe

Download or read book Our Place in the Universe written by Sun Kwok and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-22 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have ever wanted to understand the basic principles of astronomy and celestial movements, you should read this book. Using pictures of the sky observed from different places on Earth, as well as drawings of ancient astronomical methods and tools, Prof. Sun Kwok tells this story in an entertaining and fascinating way. Since the beginning of human civilization, people have wondered about the structure of the cosmos and our place in the Universe. More than 2,000 years ago, our ancestors knew that the seasons were unequal, the Earth was an unattached object floating in space, and stars existed that they could not see. From celestial observations, they concluded that the Earth was round. Using simple tools and mathematics, ancient astronomers accurately determined the sizes of the Earth and Moon, the distance to the Moon, and the lengths of the months and year. With a clever device called the armillary sphere, Greek astronomers could predict the times of sunrise and sunset on any day of the year, at any place on Earth. They developed sophisticated mathematical models to forecast Mars’ motions hundreds of years into the future. Find out how ancient observers achieved these remarkable feats. With minimal use of mathematics, this book retraces the footsteps of our ancestors, explains their intellectual journeys in simple terms, and explores the philosophical implications of these discoveries.

Book Our Place in the Universe II

Download or read book Our Place in the Universe II written by Sun Kwok and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting from Newton’s times this follow-up to the author’s Springer book “Our Place in the Universe - Understanding Fundamental Astronomy from Ancient Discoveries” addresses the question of “our place in the Universe” from astronomical, physical, chemical, biological, philosophical and social perspectives. Using the history of astronomy to illustrate the process of discovery, the emphasis is on the description of the process of how we learned and on the exploration of the impacts of discoveries rather than on the presentation of facts. Thus readers are informed of the influence of science on a broad scale. Unlike the traditional way of teaching science, in this book, the author begins by describing the observations and then discusses various attempts to find answers (including unsuccessful ones). The goal is to help students develop a better appreciation of the scientific process and learn from this process to tackle real-life problems.

Book Reformed Humanism

  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Reformed Humanism written by David Fergusson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume comprises a collection of essays ordered in three parts, each of which describes broadly the sub-fields of theology to which these belong. The essays tackle core themes in Christian doctrine, the longstanding relationship of theology to philosophy, and a series of challenges facing churches today. While the volume represents a Reformed theological approach often with a historical focus, it self-consciously reflects an ecumenical and critical perspective. The term 'humanism' reflects an openness to insight, understanding and correction from different fields of knowledge, while its 'Reformed' designation positions the work within a recognized theological tradition though seeking to avoid imprisonment by it. A further feature of the collection is its attempt to overcome the curricular divisions between systematic theology, Christian ethics, and practical theology. The third section in particular deal with issues in social ethics, theological aesthetics, the place of the church in a secular culture, and the role of theology in the university.

Book The Philosophy of Outer Space

Download or read book The Philosophy of Outer Space written by Mirko Daniel Garasic and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-24 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a rigorous philosophical investigation of the rationales, challenges, and promises of the coming Space Age. Over the past decade, space exploration has made significant and accelerating progress, and its potential has attracted growing attention from science, states, businesses, innovators, as well as the media and society more generally. Yet philosophical theorizing concerning the premises, values, meanings, and impacts of space exploration is still in its infancy, and this potentially immense field of study is far from mainstream yet. This book advances outer space philosophy by integrating key scientific and societal debates sparked by recent developments in space research and activities with conceptual, existential, ethical, aesthetic, and political themes and concerns. It maps various regions of philosophical exploration, reflection, and speculation regarding humanity’s present and future emanations into outer space, to promote a broad, rich, and nuanced societal debate regarding this transformative enterprise, which is as stimulating as it can be disorienting. This book will be a fascinating read for academics, researchers, and students interested in philosophy, space studies, science and technology studies, future studies, and sustainability.

Book The Power of Kindness

Download or read book The Power of Kindness written by Piero Ferrucci and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-10-04 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A book after my own heart!"—His Holiness The Dalai Lama The Power of Kindness is a stirring examination of a simple but profound concept. Piero Ferrucci, one of the world's most respected transpersonal psychologists, explores the many surprising facets of kindness and argues that it is this trait that will not only lead to our own individual happiness and the happiness of those around us, but will guide us in a world that has become cold, anxious, difficult, and frightening. Piero Ferrucci warns against the dangers of "global cooling." As the pace of living grows faster and the impact of new technologies more insistent, communications become hurried and impersonal. The drive for profit overrides the heart. Warmth and genuine presence fade. In eighteen interlocking chapters, Dr. Ferrucci reveals that the kindest people are the most likely to thrive, to enable others to thrive, and to slowly but steadily turn our world away from violence, self-centeredness, and narcissism- and toward love. Writing with a rare combination of sensitivity and intellectual depth, Dr. Ferrucci shows that, ultimately, kindness is not a luxury in our world but rather a necessity for us all.

Book Root Connections in the Torah

Download or read book Root Connections in the Torah written by Rabbi Tzvi Matisyahu Abrahams and published by Mosaica Press. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lashon hakodesh is not just any language, it is the language with which Hashem created reality. The 22 letters of the aleph beis are the building blocks of the world. Each dibur (utterence) created devarim (things). Furthermore, a word in lashon hakodesh describes the essence of the thing. Each letter has its own innate meaning. Roots are formed through the combination of letters, and they teach us depths we often don't realize exist. What is the connection between Shalach (send) and Shulchan (table)? Dibur (speech) and Midbar (desert)? Or Boker (morning) and Bikur Cholim (visiting the sick)? Beginning with simple questions like these, we learn deep wisdom. This is the language of G-d, the Holy Tongue. It is the bridge which He uses to communicate to us His inner world - the world of His mind and thoughts, so to speak. When understood, Hebrew roots describe the essence of the ideas being discussed - and the essence of life. This original and impressive work explores Hebrew, and takes the reader on an absorbing journey by examining the inter-relationships between family roots, comparing words and unearthing their deeper meanings. In understanding these words, we come to understand ourselves.
