Book Our Old Actors Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Old Actors Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Henry Barton Baker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Old Actors, Vol. 1 of 2 Although a portion of the material of these volumes has appeared in the pages of "Temple Bar," this work claims to be much more than a mere reprint. Detached Essays have been linked together so as to form a chronological history of actors and acting from Shakespeare to Macready. Some of the Essays which have appeared have been considerably expanded, others have been relieved of irrelevant matter, and a number of new sketches have been introduced. As it was necessary to draw the line somewhere, however arbitrarily, I have omitted, with very few exceptions, the names of all actors whose stage career extended beyond Macready's. Many admirable actors are thus unmentioned who well deserve a place in every history of their profession; but besides want of space I have no desire to enter the arena of contemporary criticism. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Old Actors Closing of the theatres by the Puritans - Persecution of the players. IN England, as in France, plays founded upon Scriptural stories or on the lives of the saints were the earliest forms of dramatic representation. These were generally performed in the churches by monks and parish clerks. About the time of Henry VI. A new sort of entertainment came into vogue called The Morality, ' an allegory of the passions, the principal personage of which, The Vice, ' a witty attendant of the Devil, was afterwards developed into that indispensable character of the Elizabethan drama, the clown. In consequence of the profanity and indecency of these exhibitions, Bishop Bonner in 1542 issued a mandate in which he forbade any ecclesiastic henceforth appearing upon the public stage. Where Regent Street now stands, we passed through wretchedly-constructed shops, covered with tarpaulin, and barely habitable; while off the pavement, and nearly to the middle of the street, hawkers carried on a brisk trade. In fact, small markets existed where stalls, laden with meat, vegetables, fried fish, pastry, and other edibles, rendered the roadway, on foot or in vehicle, almost impassable. The steady march of im provement swept away these rat-holes, and few that pass in these days Holborn Bars - the Strand, near Northumberland House then now non-existent have any idea of what its appearance was in those times. Book Famous American Actors of To Day Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Famous American Actors of To Day Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Frederic Edward McKay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-26 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous American Actors of to-Day, Vol. 2 Thorne's education had been obtained, with others of the young members of the family, at the Cathedral School in Montreal, and for a while at St. John's Col lege in New York. His schooling, therefore was not very extensive, yet he showed no lack in after years of that information and accuracy that belong to the adequately trained man. In point of fact, he was fond of discussing questions of moment in literature, his tory, the drama, and the like. Being a man of inde pendence, he naturally had views of his own, views that were marked at least with vigor. He loved to gather about him, at his home and his table, men of thought, and in this way formed intimacies with Robert Inger soll and others. It is worth while noting that he was so strong in his likes and dislikes that there was no concealment of either with him. He was absolute and peremptory in this respect, and had no compromise with people that did not please him. It may be a tri ing detail to record, but it was one of the curious points in his character that he was easily bored; and yet, like the severe Edwin Forrest in his intimacy with the minstrel Christy, he would find diversion at times with ordinary but volatile people. It must have been, indeed, an unaccustomed Spirit that could lift him above the ground with cheerful thoughts at such a moment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nine Years of an Actor's Life There are circumstances, in my Early Days, which led perhaps to the Nine Years of an Actor's Life, and I therefore trust I shall be excused, and endured, if I introduce them as a Prologue to the right merry Comedy of my thespian career; for this advantage may be derived from the detail - it will show how, from a school recitation, I was led on, step by step, until at last I became a (mama man and I hope the aspiring young hero will be warned by my experience, to hold fast by whatever occupation he may be engaged in, rather than venture on a theatrical life, in which honesty is a starving quality, and virtue a thing of no repute. If so, there is much in a name. The reputation of an author, doubtless, adds to the promise given in the chosen title, and if the expected work be the biography of a person eminent during his life, popular from the possession of talents, exerted in pleasing or astonishing such of his fellow-beings as came within his sphere of action, then public attention may be reasonably expected to be excited at its advent, and its mission for good or ill established by critics competent to judge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forty Years on the Stage: Others (Principally) And Myself I think I hear the reader say, What another actor's reminiscences and I am fain to admit that there has been a plentiful crop of them in the last few years. Let me hasten to give my reason and ask excuse for adding mine to the list. In some articles I wrote on stage matters in the Nineteenth Century a few years ago, I was able to say with perfect truth, I have never been interviewed. Ihave neverinspireda paragraph. Ihave never made speeches, and I may add I have never been photographed except at the request of my manager at the time. I was taught, in my early days on the stage, that the actor's duty was behind the proscenium, and that his best and most telling pronouncements were those made when the curtain was up. In that faith I have lived and worked earnestly and sincerely. It is an old-fashioned and out-oi - date creed in these self asserting days, but in the autumn of one's career it is too late to change, and it follows as a matter of course that I am not one of those who consider their lives, their doings or their thoughts of general or public interest. But in my forty-odd years on the stage I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Actor Series Happy the biographer whose privilege it is to recount the life of one distinguished for genius and intellect, and at the same time for nobility of life and character. Such is my good fortune in writing of Charlotte Cushman. Her dramatic career will be the subject of this volume, and no space will be found for the picturing of her pri vate life. There is, however, no regret felt on this account, since all that relates to Charlotte Cushman as a woman and as a friend belongs more especially to those who were near and dear to her, and all that concerns the outside world in this regard has been told by her chosen 'friend and biographer far more suitably than another could hope to tell it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of an Actor Dear Sir, Disinterested friendship is my motto upon the present occasion; flattery is out of the question, and talent my only object in view. Dedications, too often, are little else but inflated pieces of adulation of the persons to whom they are addressed. I have no necessity to adopt such a line of conduct, my course is clear; the voice of the public, from one end of the kingdom to the other, has long since decided upon your merits as a performer of unrivalled eminence; therefore any addition of mine on that head would be out of place, if not superfluous. With more freedom than politeness, sir (ceremony is not my forte), the Life of an Actor, with all its faults, is presented to your notice.
