Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Handbook of Palestine The Handbook of Palestine has been written and printed during a period of transition in the administration of the country. While the book. Was in the press the Council of the League of Nations formally approved the conferment on Great Britain of the Mandate for Palestine; and, consequent upon this act, a new constitution is to come into force, the nominated Advisory Council will be succeeded by a partly elected Legislative Council, and other changes in the direction of greater self-government, which had awaited 'the ratification of the Mandate, are becoming operative. Again, on the 1st July, 1922, the adminis trative divisions of the country were reorganized. The editors of the Handbook have endeavoured, to the best of their ability, to keep pace with these changes and to make the work as up-to-date as possible; but, in view of the difficulties with which they have been faced in this con nexion, they ask the indulgence of their readers if, at times, events have moved faster than the printer. Book With Our Army in Palestine Classic Reprint

Download or read book With Our Army in Palestine Classic Reprint written by Antony Bluett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Our Army in Palestine This was a more serious matter, for the Senussi were the largest native tribe in Egypt, and Turkish and German officers had been very busy amongst them. Some account of the operations against them has already been published, but I believe it concerns mainly the Duke of Westminster's spirited dash with his armoured cars to rescue the ship wrecked survivors of the Tara, who were grossly ill-treated by the Senussi. Yet right up to the end of 1917 they were a source of trouble, and in 1915 the situation became so serious that a strong puni tive force had to be sent to Mersa Matruh, on the Western Frontier of Egypt, to cope with it. Here, I think, is where we must make our bow, for we had some small place in these operations; it was, in fact, our introduction to actual fighting, though we had already spent many torrid weeks on the Suez Canal. And no better mise en sce'ne could we have than the old Missa, for the story of the campaign would be incomplete without mention of her; she was unique. Besides, every body in Egypt knows the M issa. Those who had the misfortune to know her intimately speak of her with revilings and cast slurs upon her parentage. Book Palestine During the War

Download or read book Palestine During the War written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Palestine During the War: Being a Record of the Preservation of the Jewish Settlements in Palestine There was also a continuous increase in the number of persons of means who brought their belongings here in order to settle or to invest their capital. Some of these went into the professions, others contributed to the expansion of the export trade, while others again, settling in the towns of Jaffa and Haifa, acquired property and plantations, Opened workshops, built houses, and laid the foundations of a new commercial life. It was these settlers who did most for the expansion of Tel Aviv, and who began to found there a new commercial organisation which exercised a strong influence on the whole of the Yishub. The progress of this section was displayed most conspicuously in the increase of land purchase and of the sums devoted to this purpose. This class also furthered the development of the colonies, where they acquired property, built houses, laid out plantations, promoted commerce, and took an active part in the public life which was ripening there. A special class of immigrants was formed by the school children, who were either sent by their parents alone to Palestine in order to receive there a national education, or for whose sakes the parents themselves came over. The best testimony to the attraction of Palestine for the studious youth of Jewry is afforded by the rapid growth of the Hebrew Gymnasium in Jaffa, alongside of which should be mentioned the Modern School in Haifa, the Hebrew High School in Jerusalem, and the Bezalel Arts and Crafts school in Jerusalem, as in these also there were a number of pupils from abroad. The Jaffa Gymnasium had in 1914, the eighth year of its existence, 750 pupils, who brought francs monthly into the country. The yearly expenditure of the Gymnasium, three-quarters of which was defrayed from the fees of the children from abroad, amounted to francs. The financial importance of this immigration is further shown by the fact that in addition to the fees about francs came into the country from abroad for the maintenance of these children. Book The Jewish National Fund Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Jewish National Fund Classic Reprint written by Adolf Bohm and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jewish National Fund The first edition Of this; pamphlet was intended to give an instructive survey of the nature and aims Of the Jewish National Fund, and thus to direct the attention Of the Jewish public to this important and beneficent institution, which owes its existence to the movement for the revival Of Jewish national life. The Jewish National Fund had then just begun to develop a systematic colonising activity in Palestine, and hence it was necessary to discuss at length the general principles that determined the tendency of that activity. Since then this practical work in Palestine has constantly expanded, and in its course not only have many valuable experiences been gathered, but new problems have arisen that demand for their solution a corresponding development of the National Fund. In the present second edition Of this pamphlet, therefore, the parts dealing with the aims and activity of the National Fund have had' to be altered in accordance Wit-h the changed situation. In its amended form this pamphlet gives a survey Of the works hitherto carried out, and shows that they do not - as it might appear to a superficial Observer - merely represent a number Of varied and even valuable, but disconnected achievements, but' that they are all closely connected manifestations Of one and the same strict fundamental principle Of the National F und - jewz'sh labour upou jewzish soil. It is necessary to emphasise this, because, owing to the constant willingness displayed by the National Fund, the disposition has. Lately prevailed Of invoking its aid in every question Of Palestinian colonisation that arises. But however gratifying the growth of the resources Of this Fund may be, it cannot do everything, but must maintain an attitude Of reserve to wards many claims made upon it, if it is not to run the danger of being overwhelmed by countless tasks, Of allowing its forces to become dissipated, and Of being diverted from its principal aim. The work that the Fund accomplishes must, therefore, always be regarded and presented in the light of its basic principles and as against the simple and prevalent View, that the National Fund' works in Palestine, it must be constantly shown what work it has to do there, and why it has to do it. Book Queer Palestine and the Empire of Critique

Download or read book Queer Palestine and the Empire of Critique written by Sa'ed Atshan and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-26 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Ramallah to New York, Tel Aviv to Porto Alegre, people around the world celebrate a formidable, transnational Palestinian LGBTQ social movement. Solidarity with Palestinians has become a salient domain of global queer politics. Yet LGBTQ Palestinians, even as they fight patriarchy and imperialism, are themselves subjected to an "empire of critique" from Israeli and Palestinian institutions, Western academics, journalists and filmmakers, and even fellow activists. Such global criticism has limited growth and led to an emphasis within the movement on anti-imperialism over the struggle against homophobia. With this book, Sa'ed Atshan asks how transnational progressive social movements can balance struggles for liberation along more than one axis. He explores critical junctures in the history of Palestinian LGBTQ activism, revealing the queer Palestinian spirit of agency, defiance, and creativity, in the face of daunting pressures and forces working to constrict it. Queer Palestine and the Empire of Critique explores the necessity of connecting the struggles for Palestinian freedom with the struggle against homophobia.

Book Palestine Israel in the Print News Media

Download or read book Palestine Israel in the Print News Media written by Luke Peterson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel-Palestine in the Print News Media: Contending Discourses is concerned with conceptions of language, knowledge, and thought about political conflict in the Middle East in two national news media communities: the United States and the United Kingdom. Arguing for the existence of national perspectives which are constructed, distributed, and reinforced in the print news media, this study provides a detailed linguistic analysis of print news media coverage of four recent events in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in order to examine ideological patterns present in print news media coverage. The two news communities are compared for lexical choices in news stories about the conflict, attribution of agency in the discussion of conflict events, the inclusion or exclusion of historical context in explanations of the conflict, and reliance upon essentialist elements during and within print representations of Palestine-Israel. The book also devotes space to first-hand testimony from journalists with extensive experience covering the conflict from within both news media institutions. Unifying various avenues of academic enquiry reflecting upon the acquisition of information and the development of knowledge, this book will be of interest to those seeking a new approach to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Book The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine

Download or read book The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine written by Ilan Pappe and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book that is providing a storm of controversy, from ‘Israel’s bravest historian’ (John Pilger) Renowned Israeli historian, Ilan Pappe's groundbreaking work on the formation of the State of Israel. 'Along with the late Edward Said, Ilan Pappe is the most eloquent writer of Palestinian history.' NEW STATESMAN Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint. Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called 'ethnic cleansing'. Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel’s founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. Indispensable for anyone interested in the current crisis in the Middle East. *** 'Ilan Pappe is Israel's bravest, most principled, most incisive historian.' JOHN PILGER 'Pappe has opened up an important new line of inquiry into the vast and fateful subject of the Palestinian refugees. His book is rewarding in other ways. It has at times an elegiac, even sentimental, character, recalling the lost, obliterated life of the Palestinian Arabs and imagining or regretting what Pappe believes could have been a better land of Palestine.' TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT 'A major intervention in an argument that will, and must, continue. There's no hope of lasting Middle East peace while the ghosts of 1948 still walk.' INDEPENDENT

Book The Language of Palestine

Download or read book The Language of Palestine written by John Courtenay James and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Language of Palestine: And Adjacent Regions The following work is the result of many years' study, which has been conducted amid the multitudinous duties of a busy pastorate. I am not aware of any treatment of the subject along quite the same lines. The material on the historical side is considerable, and is becoming more homogeneous with the progress of archaeological research. On the linguistic side the material is also abundant, but less definite and serviceable. The inscriptions, papyri and other literature, supply no connected chain of evidence. So many dialects are found, so many idioms, and so many exceptions to anything like a general rule, that the construction of a complete grammar and syntax is quite impossible. No doubt more will be achieved in this respect when Hittite and other obscure writings have been clearly read and interpreted. This work is not a history of the ancient races of western Asia, nor a grammar of their languages. But history is introduced to show the causes which led t]o the rise of one language and the supersession of another, and to indicate the changes in tribal and national fortunes which resulted in dialectic variations. Grammar and syntax, too, are brought under contribution, to illustrate the types of language which successively triumphed in the regions named, and to show, at least in some general principles, how one language differed from another. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home of Fadeless Splendour: Or Palestine of to-Day IT had been a sunny blue day and the scenery was glorious. We were ordered at 8 pm. To start creeping up the hill, a dozen miles north-west of Jerusalem and almost overlooking the city. The night was very dark; in places the boulders were almost insurmountable. We advanced less than half a mile in an hour. The men were very cheery, for they knew little of what lay ahead; only the officers knew, and I for one was quite satisfied that the enterprise was desperate beyond words. The summit of the hill was but half a mile away, though about four hundred and fifty feet above us in actual height. We lay down and waited for the rising of the moon. Waiting under such circumstances was not pleasant. The silence was broken only by the cry of jackals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
