Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Mutual Friend, Vol. 3 of 3 Here was no sleep for Bradley Headstone on that night when Eugene Wrayburn turned so easily in his bed; there was no sleep for little Miss Peccher. Bradley consumed the lonely hours, and consumed himself, in haunting the spot where his careless rival lay a-dreaming; little Miss Peccher wore them away in listening for the return home of the master of her heart, and in sorrowfiilly presag ing that much was amiss with him. Yet more was amiss with him than Miss Peecher's simply arranged little work-box of thoughts, fitted with no gloomy and dark recesses, could hold. For, the state of the man was murderous. Inheriting his father's wealth was contingent only upon behaving himself and arriving at the opportune time to marry the young and lovely, Bella Wilfer. Away from England he receives terrible news, his father is dead. John made to rush home but on his route home he disappears, and many consider him to be a drowned body found nearby, dead and gone as well. The fortune passes to an elderly and loyal ex retainer of the family and he sets up to live quietly, but all was not destined to last. Charles Dickens' wrote 'Our Mutual Friend' last of all his novels after thirteen previous novels in his prolific career. Unappreciated at the time, it has come to be regarded as one of the best of Dickens' life. His similes hum with life and his characters are peculiar in a way that makes them somehow more real. Unlike hearing from a narrator, we wait with the characters to hear the next development on the grapevine. The energy and desire to express something meaningful about our shared human experience came through in every installment as it came out. With a new illustrator and a new way of publishing, more accessible to the masses, the story focuses on the problems that come with the greed and moral decadence that wealth can bring. A controversial message in a society which viewed wealth as just and the unfortunates of the world as a natural reality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Mutual Friend, Vol. 1 of 2 This romance was published in monthly numbers, extending from May, 1864, to November, Dickens had con ceived some of the characters and incidents of the story as far back as 1861. The feeling of improbability, which the least critical reader experiences in following the course of the narra tive, is partly accounted for by the way in which the author picked up its materials. Almost everything in it is excep tional; but it may be said that portions which shock even the eager and ready credulity of the ordinary novel reader were founded on facts. In his wanderings by the banks of the Thames, he had seen hand-bills posted up, indicating that fishing for the bodies of persons drowned in the river was a regular business of some degraded watermen; and his ready imagination suggested the characters of Hexam and Rogue Riderhood. At Chatham, while once walking With Leech, the artist, both were struck and amused by observing a father and son together, the uneducated father in fustian and the educated boy in spectacles. Charley Hexam was the exten sion of the educated boy Marcus Stone, the illustrator of Our Mutual Friend, had discovered a queer character engaged in a strange trade, and carried Dickens to see him; and the result was the introduction into the story of Mr. Venus, preserver of animals and birds, and articulator of human bones. Mr. Riah, the patriarchal and benevolent old J ew, was made quite a prominent character in the book, be cause a J ewish lady, whom Dickens highly esteemed, consid ered that Fagin, in Oliver Twist, was calculated to bring reproach on the J ewish religion as well as on the J ewish race. Animate London, with smarting eyes and irritated lungs, was blinking, wheezing, and choking inanimate London was a sooty spectre, divided in purpose between being visible and invisible, and so being wholly neither. Gas-lights flared in the Shops with a haggard and unblessed air, as knowing themselves to be night creatures that had no business abroad under the sun; while the sun itself, when it was for a few moments dimly indicated through circling eddies of fog, showed as if it had gone out, and were collapsing flat and cold. Even in the surrounding country it was a foggy day, but there the fog was grey, whereas in London it was, at about the boundary-line, dark yellow, and a little within it brown, and then browner, and then browner, until at the heart of the City - which call St. Mary Axe - it was rusty black. From any point of the high ridge of land northward, it might have been discerned that the loftiest buildings made an occasional struggle to get.
