Book excerpt: From the author of the acclaimed Simply Christian and Surprised by Hope comes a book that addresses the question that has plagued humans for centuries—what is our purpose? As Christians, what are we to do with that ambiguous time between baptism and the funeral? It's easy to become preoccupied with who gets into heaven; the real challenge is how we are going to live in the here and now. Wright dispels the common misconception that Christian living is nothing more than a checklist of dos and don'ts. Nor is it a prescription to "follow your heart" wherever it may lead. Instead, After You Believe reveals the Bible's call for a revolution—a transformation of character that takes us beyond our earthly pursuit of money, sex, and power into a virtuous state of living that allows us to reflect God and live more worshipful, fulfilling lives. We are all spiritual seekers, intuitively knowing there is more to life than we suspect. This is a book for anyone who is hoping there is something more while we're here on Earth. There is. We are being called to join the revolution, and Wright insightfully encourages readers to find new purpose and clarity by taking us on an eye-opening journey through key biblical passages that promise to radically alter the work of the church and the direction of our lives.

Book The Pentagon s Battle for the American Mind

Download or read book The Pentagon s Battle for the American Mind written by Lori L. Bogle and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-12 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has historically believed itself to be the institution best suited to develop the character, spiritual values, and patriotism of American youth. In Strategy for Survival, Lori Bogle investigates how the armed forces assigned itself the role of guardian and interpreter of national values and why it sought to create “ideologically sound Americans capable of defeating communism and assuring the victory of democracy at home and abroad.” Bogle shows that a tendency by some in the armed forces to diffuse their view of America’s civil religion among the general population predated tension with the Soviet Union. Bogle traces this trend from the Progressive Era though the early Cold War, when the Truman and Eisenhower administrations took seriously the battle of ideologies of that era and formulated plans that promised not only to meet the armed forces’ manpower needs but also to prepare the American public morally and spiritually for confrontation with the evils of communism. Both Truman’s plan for Universal Military Training and Eisenhower’s psychological warfare programs promoted an evangelical democracy and sought to inculcate a secular civil-military religion in the general public. During the early 1960s, joint military-civilian anticommunist conferences, organized by the authority of the Department of Defense, were exploited by ultra-conservative civilians advancing their own political and religious agendas. Bogle’s analysis suggests that cooperation among evangelicals, the military, and government was considered both necessary and normal. The Boy Scouts pushed a narrow vision of American democracy, and Joe McCarthy’s chauvinism was less an aberration than a particularly noxious manifestation of a widespread attitude. To combat communism, American society and its armed forces embraced brainwashing—narrow moral education that attacked everyone and everything not consonant with their view of the world and how it ought to be ordered. Exposure of this alliance ultimately dissolved it. However, the cult of toughness and the blinkered view of reality that characterized the armed forces and American society during the Cold War are still valued by many, and are thus still worthy of consideration.

Book The Spiritual Child

Download or read book The Spiritual Child written by Dr. Lisa Miller and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Spiritual Child, psychologist Lisa Miller presents the next big idea in psychology: the science and the power of spirituality. She explains the clear, scientific link between spirituality and health and shows that children who have a positive, active relationship to spirituality: * are 40% less likely to use and abuse substances * are 60% less likely to be depressed as teenagers * are 80% less likely to have dangerous or unprotected sex * have significantly more positive markers for thriving including an increased sense of meaning and purpose, and high levels of academic success. Combining cutting-edge research with broad anecdotal evidence from her work as a clinical psychologist to illustrate just how invaluable spirituality is to a child's mental and physical health, Miller translates these findings into practical advice for parents, giving them concrete ways to develop and encourage their children's—as well as their own—well-being. In this provocative, conversation-starting book, Dr. Miller presents us with a pioneering new way to think about parenting our modern youth.

Book The Woman the Hour and the Garden

Download or read book The Woman the Hour and the Garden written by Addison Hodges Hart and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was Jesus ever married? Yes, indeed, says Addison Hodges Hart -- but not in the way that recent sensationalist writers have claimed. In this book Hart opens an illuminating window into John's Gospel as he explores its rich, poetic imagery, particularly the metaphorical significance of "the Woman." Inspired by the writings of early church fathers and medieval theologians, Hart presents the Gospel of John as an incarnational, sacramental text and shows that it is primarily a revelation of salvation, deeply mystical and intended to lead its readers into a living relationship with the one who is the Bridegroom of his people.

Book Motivation in Organisations

Download or read book Motivation in Organisations written by Manuel Guillen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motivation in Organisations: Searching for a Meaningful Work-Life Balance extends the current motivation models in business education to include motives of human behaviour that have been neglected for decades. It debunks some of the myths about human motivation (self-interest as the dominant factor, amorality and non-spirituality) and explains why this approach to teaching business is erroneous and leads to wrong and harmful practices in many organisations. In a very personal and engaging style, the author presents a "map of motivations", based on a humanistic approach to management. This includes the latest findings of Abraham H. Maslow supported by sound philosophical reflections and modern research. He also presents specific ways of putting the framework into practice, sharing stories from students and professionals of how this framework has helped them better understand their own motivations and look at their daily work in a much more meaningful way. The book is highly relevant to students and researchers in humanistic management, people management, organisational behaviour, business ethics, corporate social responsibility and sustainability. In short, this text will be truly inspiring to anyone who wants to reflect on motivations in organisations and how to achieve a better work-life balance.

Download or read book Jesus Spiritual Laws written by Isabel Anders and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven steps to spiritual life ... ten principles for business success ... twelve ways to fulfill your destiny. We see the promises and principles everywhere we turn—and our hearts leap. Is there really a list of foolproof actions or attitudes—or a combination of the above—that can turn our life around, bring us joy and fulfillment and personal acclaim ... fill up the empty places inside us and guarantee better relationships with the people around us? When Jesus taught these eight spiritual laws in his Sermon on the Mount in Matthew chapter 5, he was giving timeless descriptions of the good, moral, and ethical life, which, when sincerely practiced, will bring incalculable joy. Each of these laws can be accessible to us in our spiritual lives as naturally as breathing comes to our physical lives. These laws or blessings are actually a series of exclamations—or "Congratulations!"—appropriate for those who are already existing in a state of happiness. Love—fulfillment—is all around us already. All that is required is that we learn how to enter in to the joy and peace that is God’s kingdom among us here and now.

Book excerpt: This sesquicentennial project of Presbyterian College tells the stories of thirteen individuals, chosen from among its graduates, faculty and benefactors, whose still voices represent in unique ways the history and influence of the college over the past 150 years. Each chapter presents a biography, a sermon, address, letter or report, followed by a commentary showing how this still voice spoke to the issues of the time and why it still should be heard. The themes remind us of the college's continuing mission to provide the Church with strong and visionary leaders. The book concludes with useful lists of Presbyterian College's students, scholars, supporters and societies down through the years.
