Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico of the Mexicans The thunders of the titanic struggle which at present convulses Europe have drowned the echoes of strife which come from far-away Mexico, and in the eyes of many the warringfiof the factions in the American Republic will seem very like the battle of the mice and the frogs. Yet we who are sacrificing everything for an ideal should feel a lively sympathy with the Mexican people, for when all is said they, too, are fighting for idealistic reasons - for the possession and free exercise of that liberty towards which the spirit of man in all climes and ages has so painfully yet so persistently aspired. Of all literature, that is the most useful which is the result of sympathetic and close personal relations. The writer has had the privi lege of travelling a little in Mexico with Dr. Case, particularly in those regions ofgiihughua which were most recently his home, and can give personal testi mony to the intimate friendship existing between Dr. Case and the Mexican people, and to the heroism with which he went on about his accustomed life in Mexico during years when the northern states were overrun with disorganized bands of soldiers and outlaws and life there was full of danger. His book presents a series of views of Mexican life, the veracity of which is apparent to any one who has visited Mexico, and his conclusions with respect to the Mexican people and their future are the thoughts of a man of close powers of observation, sympathetic insight, and long experi ence in analyzing the characters of men of another race and heritage from ourselves. Book Recollections of Mexico Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recollections of Mexico Classic Reprint written by Waddy Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Mexico I Have yielded with a good deal of reluctance to the importunities of many of my friends in consenting to devote the little leisure which is left me from professional and other avocations, to writing the following pages. No thought of such a thing ever occurred to me during my residence in Mexico, or I should have supplied myself, as I had abundant means of doing, with the materials for such a work. The book, therefore, will be found to contain just what its title imports - "Recollections and Desultory Dissertations." The reader must not expect the life and freshness of a finished picture, but mere sketches and outlines - nor that minute exactness of detail on many subjects which may be desirable, although I believe that the sketches will be found to be generally accurate; I can say in the words of an affidavit to an answer in chancery, "that the facts stated as of my own knowledge are true, and those stated on the information of others I believe to be true." I am not sure, however, that a description of the customs, scenes, and peculiarities of a country is not generally the better for being written a year or two after the writer has left it. The want of exactness in minute particulars is compensated by the absence of a sometimes wearisome tediousness of detail, and often of circumstances of interest only to the writer. And it is perhaps also true that the general remembrance - a sort of skeleton map which is left on the mind of the writer will give to the reader a more accurate coup d'aeil of the country and all its peculiarities, physical and social, than a more minute description. Before I went to Mexico I sought in vain for some work which would give me some idea of the society, manners, and customs of that unique, and, in a great degree, primitive people. This want has been since supplied. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Near Side of the Mexican Question Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Near Side of the Mexican Question Classic Reprint written by Jay S. Stowell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Near Side of the Mexican Question There are two sides to nearly every matter and the ever-present Mexican question offers no exception to this general rule. The side of this question of which we hear least is that lying north of the international line, yet this aspect of the situation is of Vital concern to every citizen in the United States. The future of our country is unalterably and inextricably bound up with the future of Mexico and the Mexicans. Every passing year but adds emphasis to this fact. The multitude of Mexicans, who have found refuge within our borders during the last decade, added to the not inconsiderable spanish-american element resident for a much longer period here, forms a group which has become well-nigh indispensable to our national life and one with which we must reckon in the days to come. It is to help the reader understand something of the intimacy of our relationship to Mexico and the large contribution which Mexicans and spanish-americans are already making to our national life that this book is written. If it helps at all toward a sympathetic ap proach to the common problems which Mexicans and Americans must work out side by side in the days ahead, it will have accomplished its purpose. Book The Mexican People

Download or read book The Mexican People written by Gutierrez De Lara and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mexican People: Their Struggle for Freedom This book is deliberately given the title of "The Mexican People: Their Struggle for Freedom." We know that to the average mind Mexico and freedom seem almost antithetical terms; that is why we wrote this book. The Mexican people have democratic traditions as grand, pure, and sane as those of any race in the world. Like all peoples, they have suffered bitter oppression at the hands of their own master class, but unlike the majority of peoples their weakness has made of them the peculiar prey of the foreign exploiter as well. For a hundred years they have maintained the bloodiest, most heroically abandoned fight for their liberties, not only against their own master class but against that master class leagued with Spain, with the United States, with France, and with England. We have long wished to tell of this struggle. It constitutes one of the most exalted dramas of the social process. If by this book, wrought out amidst many difficulties, we shall awaken the spirit of brotherhood and understanding in the hearts of some, for the battling proletariat of Mexico, our work will not have been without reward. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexican Problems The recent triumph of the Liberal or Popular Party in Mexico, after almost 4 years of struggle, presents a unique opportunity for the carrying of certain economic changes which will destroy forever the dangerous political power of those egotistical groups composed of big landowners, who up to now have maintained the working classes in a state of slavery and ignorance. It is only recently that the conspiracy of si lence in regard to the monopoly of the land, - the censurable policy of Porfirio Diaz and; of Huerta - was broken; and as there are still many educated people in the Mexican Federation who are not acquainted with the facts in the case, 1 shall dedicate this chapter to the his tory of the land. Download or read book Mexico As It Was and As It Is Classic Reprint written by Brantz Mayer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mexico as It Was and as It Is Since the year 1843, several revolts against the existing government have taken place in Mexico, and the diplomatic intercourse between us has been of increasing importance, not only on account of the Texan dis pute, but in consequence of a growing anxiety as to what is likely to be hereafter our Southern boundary, and along what parallel of latitude it is to run westwardly towards the Pacific. These considerations have induced me to revise a work, which, three years ago, I prepared for the press in the brief space of thirty days; and, - whilst I crave pardon for that act Of indiscretion, and am thankful for the favor with which it, nevertheless, was welcomed - I must frankly declare that I have found no cause to alter the statement of a single fact or Opinion. My aim was to present an unprejudiced picture of Mexico, andl hope I may be permitted to declare without vanity, that I'have the satisfaction to know from Mexicans whose good esteem is worthy Of all respect, that my views of their country and their character were received as the most just and favorable that had been published. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings From Modern Mexican Authors I hesitate at my final remark, because it will sound like a lame excuse for failure. It is not such. In these translations I have not aimed at a finished English form. I have, intentionally, made them extremely literal; I have sometimes selected an uncouth English word if it exactly translates the author, have frequently followed the Mexican form and order of words, and have even allowed my punctuation to be affected by the original. To the English critic the result will be unpleasing, but to those who wish to know Mexico and Mexican thought, it will be a gain. And it is for these that my little book is written. Of books on Mexico published in English during the present generation the most were written by hasty travelers or conventional compilers, whose views and portraitures are inevitably immature, partial, or exaggerated. Their more important and characteristic qualities, gifts, and aims, lie too deeply in the nature of the Mexican people to be clearly discerned and duly appreciated by the passing tour ist or the nonresident compiler. The richest treas ures Of information, too, regarding their traditions and history, their struggles, conflicts, and achieve ments, are tomes in Spanish, Italian, or other lan guages not Often either accessible or intelligible to such writers.
