Download or read book Our Lord s Resurrection Classic Reprint written by W. J. Sparrow Simpson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Lord's Resurrection The object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theology is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen, who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theologian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to trans late the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of everyday practical religion; and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title The Christian Religion, that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. The Editors, while not holding themselves precluded from suggesting criticisms, have regarded their proper task as that of editing, and accordingly they have not interfered with the responsibility of each writer for his treatment of his own subject. Book The Resurrection of Our Lord Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Resurrection of Our Lord Classic Reprint written by John Dover Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resurrection of Our Lord The manuscript, here printed for the first time, is a thin folio, measuring 11 x inches, bound in contemporary sheep skin. It is a Resurrection drama, divided into parts or plays' to be performed on different days. Of the entire production only four fragments survive, two belonging to 'the first dayes playe' and two to 'the seconde dayes playe The pagination of these fragments runs: 17 - 28, 37 - 38, 43 - 58, 63 - 66. Thus eight leaves are lost at the beginning, four between pages 28 and 37, two between pages 38 and 43, another two between pages 58 and 6 3, and an unknown quantity at the end, the last remaining leaf being loose. Each page is ruled in black ink, so that the text is enclosed within a rectangular frame, leaving a margin at the top for headline and page number, another at the foot for the catchword, a narrow column on the inside, and a double column on the outside, within which last are generally found stage-directions, Biblical references, and other marginalia. The manuscript is the work of a single scribe, though a few altera tions, indicated in the editorial footnotes, have been made by what are apparently other hands. The handwriting is neat and very legible; but it is clearly that of a copyist, who has found it difficult in many places to follow the sense of his original. This is proved by the presence of several passages which are obviously corrupt, by frequent interlineations, and by the curious use of the query which, though sometimes employed in the normal way and sometimes standing for an exclamation-mark, is more often simply an indication of the scribe's perplexity. The question-mark at the end of the muddle in line 736 is an almost pathetic instance of this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resurrection of Jesus There is scarcely another fact' in the Christian Faith that has caused so much difficulty to the belief of the modern man as that of the Resurrection of Jesus. The advance of science in our days seems to leave no room for miracle, especially for such a miracle as the resurrection of the dead to a new bodily life. And yet the question here is not of a miracle which could be put aside as unhistorical, without essential deduction from the apostolic Gospel. The church has always considered the resurrection of Jesus as a principal part of her message. The apostle Paul occasionally describes Christian saving faith in the words: Thou believest in thine heart that God hath raised Jesus from the dead (rom. 10. 9) and he also says directly: If Christ be not risen then is our preaching vain ye are yet in 3 your Sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished (1 Cor. 15. I4, 17, In like manner among all other New Testament writers, the resurrec. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Paul on the road to Damascus. Book The Revelation of the Risen Lord Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Revelation of the Risen Lord Classic Reprint written by Brooke Foss Westcott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revelation of the Risen Lord At the same time a patient endeavour to enter into the meaning of the several recorded incidents brings out the absolute originality and the prevailing power Of the Truth which they combine to make known. The idea Of the Resur rection was a new thing; and it is seen to pro duce the effects of a new force. The Fact Of the Resurrection as thus set before us explains the Life Of the Church; and the Fact itself, or the belief in the Fact, is not explicable by any antecedent conditions apart from its truth. A careful study Of the evan gelio records shews that there were no elements present in the society of the believers to produce such an idea as they slowly realised. There was no enthusiastic hope to create visions; still less to create visions which involved the sacrifice Of cherished expectations. Everywhere it appears that a new thought is kindled by the successive manifestations Of the Lord, for which earlier be lief Offered a sufficient foundation but no more. In this connexion the remarkable limitation Of the manifestations Of the Risen Lord must be noticed. When'the lesson of the new Life wasonce given it was not repeated. The revelation to St Paul, the revelation of 'jesus' as 'the Son Of God', completes the whole series. The visions Of St Stephen and St John were Of a different order.
