Book Daily Life and Work in India Classic Reprint

Download or read book Daily Life and Work in India Classic Reprint written by William Joseph Wilkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Daily Life and Work in India Tms book owes its origin to the suggestion of some good friends of Missions who thought that a work describing the ordinary life of people in India, and the different forms of Mission work as it is carried on amongst them, could not fail to interest both young and old. In carrying out this suggestion, I have given a series of sketches of the city of Calcutta and the district, with its Euro pean and native population. I have described the homes, schools, manners and customs of the people, their religious faiths and practices; and spoken too of some of their temples and other holy places. I have also attempted to show how the mission aries work and travel as they seek to unfold before the myriads of Hindus the unsearchable riches of Christ. The writing of this work has given me intense pleasure, as it has compelled me to live over again some of the happiest years of my life, and brought back to view scenes and people that had almost faded from memory. I can only wish that my readers may have as great delight in forming the acquaintance of some of these, as I have hadin recalling them to mind. If, in addition to this, it awakens their sympathies on behalf of India's millions who sit in darkness and in the region and shadow of death, and leads them to pray and work for their enlightenment, I shall be truly thankful that it was undertaken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in India, Vol. 2 of 2 IN the course of the preparation of a work of so diver sified and complex a character as this, it is almost certain to be the case that, even up to the last moment before publication, matter bearing upon the subject comes to hand. The present occasion, so far from forming an exception to the rule, exemplifies it in a very remarkable degree. The subjects upon which additional information has been acquired during the progress of the printing of these volumes are many; but there are some in particular which deserve special notice, to which it may therefore be well to call attention here. Book Six Months in India Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Six Months in India Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by Mary Carpenter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Months in India, Vol. 1 of 2 IT was not MY intention, when I went to India, to write an account of my travels: my visit was purely one of friendly sympathy. Circumstances recorded in the following narrative, led me to modify my original intention, and greatly extended my sphere of observa tion. The light afl'orded me by my past experience, as well as the sympathy in my work of the Supreme Go vernment and that of each Presidency, and the friendly confidence of the native inhabitants, enabled me, in my brief visit, to see and learn much which does not usually come under the notice of travellers. Every thing, invested with the charm of novelty, produced a very vivid impression on my mind; and though I had no time while in the country to record in writing many of these impressions, yet I had peculiar opportunities of comparing them with those of official gentlemen, and of experienced residents in the country, and thus of correcting or strengthening them. Such an account is supplied by the present Notes and Reminiscences of Thomas Twining (son of Richard Twining of the Strand, London), who, born in 1776 and educated at Rugby, went out to India in 1792, to take a position in the service of the East India Company. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 780 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jungle Life in India, or the Journeys and Journals of an Indian Geologist Although accounts of shooting and sport frequently occur in these pages, I wish it to be understood that I do not profess to write as a sportsman. Such sport as I have had, though it has been of a most varied kind, has been rather incidental to my every-day life than pursued merely for its own sake. The successful pursuit of sport requires, as a general rule, one's undivided attention, and the claims of my work in the wildest and most likely places - where, camp supplies being scarce, frequent moving had to be the order of the day - Often prevented me from availing myself of opportunities for making large bags. For. Those sportsmen who care for something more than numbering the head of game killed - and they constitute, I believe, the majority in India these pages will not, I trust, prove devoid of interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Incidents and Life in India: The Information Contained in This Volume Has Been Collected by Personal Research and Extensive Travel in India and by Compilation From Authentic Sources India, by a long series of remarkable events, has become a land of great interest, not only to the philosopher and states man, but to the general reader. The inhabitants of no other country can boast of antiquity more remote, of historic inci dents more important, or of warriors, statesmen, and poets more renowned. The modern scholar and antiquarian can revel in the abundance of the literary works of India written thousands of years ago, in a language which excels all others in perfection and refinement. Among these are poems con taining four hundred thousand lines, while the longest poem in the English language contains less than eleven thousand. Book Six Weeks Trip Through India

Download or read book Six Weeks Trip Through India written by J. Ferguson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Weeks' Trip Through India: Being Notes by the Way The following pages contain nothing more than is professed in the title, namely, "Notes by the Way," penned, as opportunity offered, for the benefit of the readers of a daily newspaper, and without any thought of publication in a connected form. They have been reproduced in deference to the wishes expressed in several and divers quarters, in some cases by readers in Europe who were good enough to say that seeing India through the eyes of an old tropical resident gave a new interest to much of what was narrated. Therein must be found our apology for this booklet and for any novelty connected with it, namely that the writer, though over forty years resident in "Lanka" - "the Pearl-drop on the brow of India" of the Hindoos - and, although he had twice travelled round the world in different directions, - had never before landed on the Continent of India. It is so often the case that an inspection of what is nearest at hand is put off to the last. Our sincere wish now is that all who may follow in our footsteps may have as much pleasure and profit from their trip as we did in our six weeks' tour during November-December 1901.
