Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following is a brief summary of the prophecies which have lead many people to believe that the British and the Anglo-Saxon race are the descendants of the Ten Tribes of Israel which were carried away captive in the years 743 and 721 B.C. Importance of the Subject. It has often been asked - Of what value to the Christian, even if true, is the identity of the British with Israel? It has this importance, that whereas the apparent non-fulfilment of the promises to Israel is one of the strongest arguments of the infidel against the inspiration of the Bible, the evidence of their exact fulfilment in the British race has, in numerous cases, led unbelievers to believe in the truth of the Bible, and has thrown a new light on, and created a deep interest in, the predictions of the prophets which, previously, appeared to be of no significance or practical importance. This, of itself, ought to be of the greatest interest to every true Christian. May not indeed the recognition of this truth be one of the means for restoring the rapidly growing unbelief in the Bible which is undermining the moral character and rectitude of the nation and which is the certain forerunner of judgement? Secondly, the belief in their common origin and future fate could not fail to be a strong bond of union between the different portions of the nation, and this must be of the greatest importance in view of the attempts which are now being made to set class against class and to disintegrate the nation by separating certain portions from the remainder. (This would be the effect of giving Home Rule, as urged by some, to Scotland and Wales as if they were distinct peoples to the English.)

Book Christian Persecution Martyrdom and Orthodoxy

Download or read book Christian Persecution Martyrdom and Orthodoxy written by Geoffrey de Ste. Croix and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-09-28 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together seven seminal papers by the great radical historian Geoffrey de Ste. Croix, who died in 2000, on early Christian topics, with an especial focus on persecution and martyrdom. Christian martyrdom is a topic which conjures up ready images of inhumane persecutors confronted by Christian heroes who perish for the instant but win the long-term battle for reputation. In five of these essays Ste. Croix scrutinizes the evidence to reveal the significant role of Christian themselves, first as volunteer martyrs and later, after the triumph of Christianity in the early fourth century, as organizers of much more effective persecutions. A sixth essay pursues the question of the control of Christianity through a comprehensive study of the context for one of the Church's most important and divisive doctrinal decisions, at the Council of Chalcedon (AD 451); the key role of the emperor and his senior secular officials is revealed, contrary to the prevailing interpretation of Church historians. Finally the attitudes of the early Church towards property and slavery are reviewed, to show the divide between the Gospel message and actual practice.

Book A Testimony of Jesus Christ Volume 2

Download or read book A Testimony of Jesus Christ Volume 2 written by Anthony Charles Garland and published by SpiritAndTruth.org. This book was released on 2007 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Commentary on the Book of Revelation - Volume 2 The author presents a detailed study of the Book of Revelation emphasizing prophetic themes from the rest of the Bible which find their fulfillment in Revelation. To understand this controversial book, the author explores the many connections between the visions seen by the Apostle John and previous prophetic revelation given to Old Testament prophets such as Daniel, Ezekiel, and others. It is the author's conviction that an understanding of related passages elsewhere in the Bible is the most important key to unlocking the bewildering variety of interpretations which often accompany the study of the last book of the Bible. The commentary can be used in conjunction with a free companion internet course providing an additional 70 hours of audio instruction linked to almost 1,000 slides.
