Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human intelligence isn’t just located in the brain. Our bodies are marvelously sophisticated and complex, with a variety of autonomic systems that help maintain our health without us ever having to think about them. But how exactly do all these physiological structures actually work? In Our Intelligent Bodies, physiology professor Gary F. Merrill takes you on a guided tour through the human body. You’ll learn how our eyes are designed to detect unimaginably small bursts of light and how our ears contain bundles of tiny hairs, each one attuned to different sound frequencies. You’ll also discover how our hearts are smart enough to compensate for skipped beats and irregular rhythms and how our pulmonary system adjusts for low oxygen levels. You’ll even find out why the gut is sometimes called the “second brain,” its reflexes controlled by millions of neurons. Written in a fun, easy-to-comprehend style and filled with illuminating analogies, Our Intelligent Bodies also brings readers up to date on cutting-edge research into the wonders of human physiology. It will give you a new appreciation for the smart decisions our bodies are making when our brains aren’t paying attention.

Book The Intelligent Body Reversing Chronic Fatigue and Pain From the Inside Out

Download or read book The Intelligent Body Reversing Chronic Fatigue and Pain From the Inside Out written by Kyle L. Davies and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exercises and strategies for long-term emotional well-being in the face of physical difficulties. Why are we seeing growing numbers of people suffering from debilitating chronic symptoms of pain, fatigue, inflammation and cognitive impairment that medicine is failing to resolve? A new paradigm is needed where we understand the mind and body as an interconnected flowing system. This paradigm embraces the self-healing, self-correcting, and self-creating natures of our connected mind-body system. Physical symptoms are simply a sign of disharmony and energetic imbalance, a “tap on the shoulder” from our intelligent body that is trying to get our attention. This “tap” on the shoulder can become debilitating symptoms over time. When we pay attention, and understand this communication, we can take the steps to facilitate our own self-healing. This book explains the origins of chronic symptoms and outlines the road to recovery. Readers are offered life-changing principles and practices to regain harmony in their lives and bodies, whether they suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, adrenal fatigue, trauma, depression, or anxiety. It explains how we can learn to heal ourselves from the inside out by reconceptualizing the relationships among our bodies, minds, and emotions, embracing the full importance of the mind-body connection, and tapping our natural restorative capacities. Here, readers will find ways to maximize the connections between optimum health, peace of mind, and fulfilling life experiences, all emerging when we are aligned with our “true self.”

Book How the Body Shapes the Way We Think

Download or read book How the Body Shapes the Way We Think written by Rolf Pfeifer and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006-10-27 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of embodied intelligence and its implications points toward a theory of intelligence in general; with case studies of intelligent systems in ubiquitous computing, business and management, human memory, and robotics. How could the body influence our thinking when it seems obvious that the brain controls the body? In How the Body Shapes the Way We Think, Rolf Pfeifer and Josh Bongard demonstrate that thought is not independent of the body but is tightly constrained, and at the same time enabled, by it. They argue that the kinds of thoughts we are capable of have their foundation in our embodiment—in our morphology and the material properties of our bodies. This crucial notion of embodiment underlies fundamental changes in the field of artificial intelligence over the past two decades, and Pfeifer and Bongard use the basic methodology of artificial intelligence—"understanding by building"—to describe their insights. If we understand how to design and build intelligent systems, they reason, we will better understand intelligence in general. In accessible, nontechnical language, and using many examples, they introduce the basic concepts by building on recent developments in robotics, biology, neuroscience, and psychology to outline a possible theory of intelligence. They illustrate applications of such a theory in ubiquitous computing, business and management, and the psychology of human memory. Embodied intelligence, as described by Pfeifer and Bongard, has important implications for our understanding of both natural and artificial intelligence.

Book Intelligence in the Flesh

    Book Details:
  • Author : Guy Claxton
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2015-08-25
  • ISBN : 0300215975
  • Pages : 343 pages

Download or read book Intelligence in the Flesh written by Guy Claxton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you think that intelligence emanates from the mind and that reasoning necessitates the suppression of emotion, you’d better think again—or rather not “think” at all. In his provocative new book, Guy Claxton draws on the latest findings in neuroscience and psychology to reveal how our bodies—long dismissed as mere conveyances—actually constitute the core of our intelligent life. From the endocrinal means by which our organs communicate to the instantaneous decision-making prompted by external phenomena, our bodies are able to perform intelligent computations that we either overlook or wrongly attribute to our brains. Embodied intelligence is one of the most exciting areas in contemporary philosophy and neuropsychology, and Claxton shows how the privilege given to cerebral thinking has taken a toll on modern society, resulting in too much screen time, the diminishment of skilled craftsmanship, and an overvaluing of white-collar over blue-collar labor. Discussing techniques that will help us reconnect with our bodies, Claxton shows how an appreciation of the body’s intelligence will enrich all our lives.

Book excerpt: Elon Musk named Our Final Invention one of five books everyone should read about the future—a Huffington Post Definitive Tech Book of 2013. Artificial Intelligence helps choose what books you buy, what movies you see, and even who you date. It puts the “smart” in your smartphone and soon it will drive your car. It makes most of the trades on Wall Street, and controls vital energy, water, and transportation infrastructure. But Artificial Intelligence can also threaten our existence. In as little as a decade, AI could match and then surpass human intelligence. Corporations and government agencies are pouring billions into achieving AI’s Holy Grail—human-level intelligence. Once AI has attained it, scientists argue, it will have survival drives much like our own. We may be forced to compete with a rival more cunning, more powerful, and more alien than we can imagine. Through profiles of tech visionaries, industry watchdogs, and groundbreaking AI systems, Our Final Invention explores the perils of the heedless pursuit of advanced AI. Until now, human intelligence has had no rival. Can we coexist with beings whose intelligence dwarfs our own? And will they allow us to? “If you read just one book that makes you confront scary high-tech realities that we’ll soon have no choice but to address, make it this one.” —The Washington Post “Science fiction has long explored the implications of humanlike machines (think of Asimov’s I, Robot), but Barrat’s thoughtful treatment adds a dose of reality.” —Science News “A dark new book . . . lays out a strong case for why we should be at least a little worried.” —The New Yorker

Book Morphological Intelligence

Download or read book Morphological Intelligence written by Keyan Ghazi-Zahedi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-04 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligence results from the interaction of the brain, body and environment. The question addressed in this book is, can we measure the contribution of the body and its' interaction with the environment? To answer this, we first present a comprehensive overview of the various ways in which a body reduces the amount of computation that the brain has to perform to solve a task. This chapter will broaden your understanding of how important inconspicuously appearing physical processes and physical properties of the body are with respect to our cognitive abilities. This form of contribution to intelligence is called Morphological Intelligence. The main contribution of this book to the field is a detailed discussion of how Morphological Intelligence can be measured from observations alone. The required mathematical framework is provided so that readers unfamiliar with information theory will be able to understand and apply the measures. Case studies from biomechanics and soft robotics illustrate how the presented quantifications can, for example, be used to measure the contribution of muscle physics to jumping and optimise the shape of a soft robotic hand. To summarise, this monograph presents various examples of how the physical properties of the body and the body’s interaction with the environment contribute to intelligence. Furthermore, it treats theoretical and practical aspects of Morphological Intelligence and demonstrates the value in two case studies.
