Book Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area

Download or read book Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area written by Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New for 2016, a completely updated guide to the Heritage Sites of the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area Traveling down the Hudson River, named by Native Americans the river that flows both ways, you discover people, places, and events that made American history. The cultural, historic, and scenic resources of the Hudson Valley are so numerous, so varied, and so compelling that it’s no wonder Congress recognized the Hudson River Valley as a National Heritage Area in 1996. The National Park Service called the region the “landscape that defined America” and characterized the valley as “an exceptionally scenic landscape that has provided the setting and inspiration for new currents of American thought, art, and history.” Its political importance was demonstrated early in our history when the river played a critical role in the Revolutionary War. The many streams and waterfalls of the tributaries of the Hudson River powered early sawmills and gristmills. The river and its landscapes inspired the Hudson River school of painters. Sublime and picturesque paintings by Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and Asher Durand depicted this unique American landscape for the world to witness. Industrialists and commercial leaders like William and John D. Rockefeller, Frederick Vanderbilt, J. P. Morgan, and Ogden Mills built their great estates along the Hudson River. The second edition includes completely updated user-friendly design and vibrant photography; heritage site pages that include brief descriptions, contact information, and accessibility site characteristics; and National Park Service Passport Stamp locations with new cancellation stamp pages for your collection. Heritage sites in this guidebook are associated with areas of interest and categorized as must see, best bet, or special interest to make it easy to explore the stories of the Hudson River Valley. Heritage sites are also organized by geography and proximity to make it easy to find heritage sites nearby.

Book Reminiscing Our Heritage

Download or read book Reminiscing Our Heritage written by Danny Walsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to be used by anybody working with older adults in residential, nursing and day care facilities. It provides a wealth of reminiscence material which can be used in a number of ways to rekindle memories and provide stimulating activity such as quizzes and discussion. Each year covered in the book is divided into the sections 'Major events', 'On the home front', 'Music', 'Television', 'Screen and page', 'Sport' and 'Do you remember?'. Many sections can be easily turned into quizzes and it would be simple to form a quiz from each year's material. One cannot cover all that happened in these years nor highlight all the associations each event or fact triggers, so the material is intended to be expanded on by the memories it triggers in clients during discussion. So, for example, where a film title is mentioned ask if people can recall the stars of the film, its plot and how it ended. The 'Major events' section will trigger lots of opinions too as it covers the political events of the decades so try to get the groups to discuss the ethical and moral dilemmas these posed at the time. The book is intended for use with individuals and groups but you will discover that in a group one persons memories will trigger another's and so what seems like a small topic can last for the whole session as we all try to tell our personal tales. While the content has a UK bias, it also covers the major world events of the decades but I have included a blank page for each year for you to record your own personal landmarks and achievements and also those of your local town or community.specialising in older adults mental health to a deeper level.

Book Our Time at Foxhollow Farm

Download or read book Our Time at Foxhollow Farm written by David Byars and published by Excelsior Editions. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Time at Foxhollow Farm is a remarkable pictorial history of an eminent Hudson Valley family in the early decades of the twentieth century. Illustrated with the family's extensive collection of personal albums compiled during the nascent years of photography, it provides a fascinating insight into the regional, social, and architectural history of the era. In 1903 Tracy Dows, the son of a successful grain merchant from Manhattan, married Alice Townsend Olin, whose Livingston forebears had settled in the Rhinebeck, New York, area in the late 1600s. Dows purchased and combined several existing farms to establish his estate, Foxhollow Farm, next to Alice's ancestral home. He commissioned Harrie T. Lindeberg, a sought-after architect trained under Stanford White, to design the family home and other buildings on the property, and the Olmsted Brothers to landscape its rolling hills. The Dowses raised their three children on the estate, and led a busy social life of tennis tournaments, weddings, dinners, and dances with such friends and neighbors as the Roosevelts and the Astors. Tracy Dows devoted himself largely to the pursuit of agricultural and civic affairs at home and in the Rhinebeck community. Olin Dows, Tracy and Alice's son, became a notable painter active in President Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration. Our Time at Foxhollow Farm follows the Dows family from 1903 through the 1930s, documenting their life at home, social activities, and travels in America and Europe. An enthusiastic amateur photographer, Tracy Dows took many of this book's photographs himself, offering a vivid and warmly intimate perspective on privileged early twentieth-century American life.

  • ISBN : 1317700724
  • Pages : 361 pages

Download or read book Heritage Planning written by Harold Kalman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heritage Planning: Principles and Process provides a comprehensive overview of heritage planning as an area of professional practice. The book first addresses the context and principles of heritage planning, including land-use law, planning practice, and international heritage doctrine, all set within the framework of larger societal issues such as sustainability and ethics. The book then takes readers through the pragmatic processes of heritage practice including collecting data, identifying community opinion, determining heritage significance, the best practices and methods of creating a conservation plan, and managing change. Heritage Planning recognizes changing approaches to heritage conservation, particularly the shift from the conservation of physical fabric to the present emphasis on retaining values, associations and stories that historic places hold for their communities. The transition has affected the practice of heritage planning and is important for those in the field. It is essential reading for both professionals that manage change within the built environment and students of heritage conservation and historic preservation.
