  • Publisher : UCL Press

  • Pages : 335 pages

Download or read book Self Build Homes written by Michaela Benson and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-Build Homes connects the burgeoning interdisciplinary research on self-build with commentary from leading international figures in the self-build and wider housing sector. Through their focus on community, dwelling, home and identity, the chapters explore the various meanings of self-build housing, encouraging new directions for discussions about self-building and calling for the recognition of the social dimensions of this process, from consideration of the structures, policies and practices that shape it, through to the lived experience of individuals and households.Divided into four parts – Discourse, Rationale, Meaning; Values, Lifestyles, Imaginaries; Community and Identity; and Perspectives from Practice – the volume comes at a time of renewed focus from policy managers and practitioners, as well as prospective builders themselves, on self-build as a means for producing homes that are more stylised, affordable and appropriate for the specific needs of households. It responds to recent advances in housing and planning policy, while also bringing this into conversation with interdisciplinary perspectives from across the social sciences on housing, home and homemaking. In this way, the book seeks to update understandings of self-build and to account for housing as a distinctly social process.

Book Population Progress Ethics

Download or read book Population Progress Ethics written by Stephen McKevitt and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population, Progress, Ethics addresses a number of critical problems America currently faces. First, and most importantly, this book tackles the huge issue of human overpopulation, a crisis now affecting everyone on our planet. The worlds human population has tripled in the authors lifetime, to more than 7.5 billion, creating significant challenges around the globe. The book next examines the changing conditions that our present-day environmental difficulties are posing to society. More broadly, the author reviews the current economic and social troubles currently ailing the United States, but not in a strict economics textbook manner. His book posits that the routine rhetoric and stance of those on both the left and the right of the political spectrum are often reflexes, and of limited usefulness in the face of the grave issues facing the nation and the rest of the globe. On a positive note, Stephen McKevitt crafts a reasoned, passionate argument for communities and professionals to unite in solving these problems. The author comes up with a to-do list for his readers, offering a number of possible and reasonable steps that the citizens of our nation can take to better the lives of us all, and the rest of the world, too, as we head into the future.

Book Gender and Modern Irish Drama

Download or read book Gender and Modern Irish Drama written by Susan Cannon Harris and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2002-09-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender and Modern Irish Drama argues that the representations of sacrificial violence central to the work of the Abbey playwrights are intimately linked with constructions of gender and sexuality. Susan Cannon Harris goes beyond an examination of the relationship between Irish national drama and Irish nationalist politics to the larger question of the way national identity and gender identity are constructed through each other. Radically redefining the context in which the Abbey plays were performed, Harris documents the material and discursive forces that produced Irish conceptions of gender. She looks at cultural constructions of the human body and their influence on nationalist rhetoric, linking the production and reception of the plays to conversations about public health, popular culture, economic policy, and racial identity that were taking place inside and outside the nationalist community. The book is both a crucial intervention in Irish studies and an important contribution to the ongoing feminist project of theorizing the production of gender and the body.
