Book excerpt: This newest edition about Pleasant Lake, located in the southwest section of West Bloomfield Township, engages the reader in the creation, habitation, development, and current status of the lake and its surroundings. It includes memoirs, with enough information and anecdotes to well inform interested readers. The history of this area reflects the development of greater West Bloomfield. The book reveals the rich history of Pleasant Lake starting with the lake and land, habitation by Indigenous people, then European descendants with farms. The book shares the history of the opening of the first West Bloomfield store, a 1922 subdivision plat for Detroiters as an affordable summer resort, and a 1940s association of summer cottages with communal property for private owners. It also includes a small factory, riding stables in the area, plus a 1989 condominium development. The project of a book about Pleasant Lake began in conjunction with Pleasant Lake Highlands subdivision's 75th anniversary in 1997, founded in 1922. Interest in local history resulted in the first edition of the book. The spiral-bound book contained 28 pages, 47 black/white photos, with 125 copies printed. The first edition sold out! Book Hoosiers and the American Story

Download or read book Hoosiers and the American Story written by Madison, James H. and published by Indiana Historical Society. This book was released on 2014-10 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can public schools in America be saved? This book considers theory, current practice, and the common school ideal through a historical lens to arrive at practical suggestions for reforming contemporary public education. Despite dramatic, sweeping changes in recent decades, a strong case can be made for guiding the reformation of contemporary public education in the United States on common school ideology of the nineteenth century. The author argues that the common school remains a public institution capable of preparing America's youth to contribute to the community in a positive manner, and that education must be treated at a public good where all children—regardless of social class—have a right to a quality education. The work includes a thorough overview of Horace Mann's writings on K–12 public education that support the common school ideal—concepts that are over 150 years old, yet still highly relevant today.
