Book Cultural Heritage Possibilities for Land Centered Societal Development

Download or read book Cultural Heritage Possibilities for Land Centered Societal Development written by Józef Hernik and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book includes multi-national research studies (social and natural science research, as well as more directly practical university-based knowledge) about cultural heritage, land, and societal development in varied countries. The book is particularly about land use (as a fundamental aspect of the environment) and its role in development (especially sustainable development). Many of the studies are about topics concerning the transition from more rural to more urbanized land areas. However, some studies concern other types of changes. This includes general attention to globalization and nation-state dimensions of change. Nonetheless, there are interpretations communicated of unique histories at differing scales in the researches here. There is often a focus on more uniquely local and regional territories (including attention to smaller-scale land use) and an interest in future possibilities that conserve positive features of past terrain.

Book Living Our Cultures Sharing Our Heritage

Download or read book Living Our Cultures Sharing Our Heritage written by Aron A. Crowell and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living Our Cultures, Sharing Our Heritage: The First Peoples of Alaska features more than 200 objects representing the masterful artistry and design traditions of twenty Alaska Native peoples. Based on a collaborative exhibition created by Alaska Native communities, the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, and the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center, this richly illustrated volume celebrates both the long-awaited return of ancestral treasures to their native homeland and the diverse cultures in which they were created. Despite the North's transformation through globalizing change, the objects shown in these pages are interpretable within ongoing cultural frames, articulated in languges still spoken. They were made for a way of life on the land that is carried on today throughout Alaska. Dialogue with the region's First Peoples evokes past meanings but focuses equally on contemporary values, practices, and identities. Objects and narratives show how each Alaska Native nation is unique—and how all are connected. After introductions to the history of the land and its people, universal themes of “Sea, Land, Rivers,” “Family and Community,” and “Ceremony and Celebration” are explored referencing exquisite masks, parkas, beaded garments, basketry, weapons, and carvings that embody the diverse environments and practices of their makers. Accompanied by traditional stories and personal accounts by Alaska Native elders, artists, and scholars, each piece featured in Living Our Cultures, Sharing Our Heritage evokes both historical and contemporary meaning, and breathes the life of its people.

Book Our Heritage in the Land Vol 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Heritage in the Land Vol 5 Classic Reprint written by Harold E. Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Heritage in the Land, Vol. 5 I have frequently been asked to arrange for the issue of a revised and cheap edition of Back to the Land. It is more than twelve years ago since that book was published During that period much has been done in the direction of carrying out many of the proposals therein made, but it has not been possible for me to find sufficient spare time for the investigation and research as to the results attained, which would be necessary for a new edition. The questions considered in that book on which recent information was mainly desired were as to (a) the use of land for the relief of the unemployed, and (b) the method by which hand husbandry could be extended in England. I have found it possible to prepare this volume, treating of these questions, by using parts of three chapters of Back to the Land, and adding thereto much further information as the result of consideration of recent experience on the subject. To secure profitable work on the land for those who have already left the country is far more difficult than to provide land under conditions which will tend to enable those now in the country to remain. I would, therefore, specially direct attention to the portion of Chapter IV., from page 112, being the part of the book treating of this particular question. Book excerpt: Douglas Brinkley’s The Wilderness Warrior celebrated Theodore Roosevelt’s spirit of outdoor exploration and bold vision to protect 234 million acres of wild America. Now, in Rightful Heritage, Brinkley turns his attention to another indefatigable environmental leader—Theodore’s distant cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt—chronicling his essential yet undersung legacy as the founder of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and the premier protector of America’s public lands. FDR built state park systems and scenic roadways from scratch. Through his leadership, pristine landscapes such as the Great Smokies, the Everglades, Joshua Tree, the Olympics, Big Bend, and the Channel Islands were forever saved. Rightful Heritage is essential reading for everyone interested in our treasured landscapes and historic sites as American birthrights.

Download or read book Rooted in the Earth written by Dianne D. Glave and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a basis in environmental history, this groundbreaking study challenges the idea that a meaningful attachment to nature and the outdoors is contrary to the black experience. The discussion shows that contemporary African American culture is usually seen as an urban culture, one that arose out of the Great Migration and has contributed to international trends in fashion, music, and the arts ever since. However, because of this urban focus, many African Americans are not at peace with their rich but tangled agrarian legacy. On one hand, the book shows, nature and violence are connected in black memory, especially in disturbing images such as slave ships on the ocean, exhaustion in the fields, dogs in the woods, and dead bodies hanging from trees. In contrast, though, there is also a competing tradition of African American stewardship of the land that should be better known. Emphasizing the tradition of black environmentalism and using storytelling techniques to dramatize the work of black naturalists, this account corrects the record and urges interested urban dwellers to get back to the land.

Book Grazing Communities

Download or read book Grazing Communities written by Letizia Bindi and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2022-05-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoralism is a diffused and ancient form of human subsistence and probably one of the most studied by anthropologists at the crossroads between continuities and transformations. The present critical discourse on sustainable and responsible development implies a change of practices, a huge socio-economic transformation, and the return of new shepherds and herders in different European regions. Transhumance and extensive breeding are revitalized as a potential resource for inner and rural areas of Europe against depopulation and as an efficient form of farming deeply influencing landscape and functioning as a perfect eco-system service. This book is an occasion to reconsider grazing communities’ frictions in the new global heritage scenario.
