MDO not propose to give a detailed account of the Dog family, even were it in my power; because this family is most numerous, whilst its varieties are almost endless. I merely intend to touch lightly upon the virtues and vices of Dogs in general, giving a few stories illustrative of them. No animal is more susceptible of education in certain matters from the hand of man than the Dog--the elephant not excepted--and there is no animal more docile, affectionate, obedient, and useful when trained. From what source our domestic Dog has sprung is not known, nor do I care to treat on it in these few pages. The original stock is supposed by some people to be the Dingo or the Wild Dog of Australia; but, as no proofs have as yet been produced, we may let the matter rest until they are, I suppose the memory exhibited by the Dog is perhaps second to no other quadruped. Once, when quartered with my regiment at the Gurragh of Kildare, in the year 1868, a brother officer of mine owned a Bull-dog that was christened Tom-Tom; this Dog being of a naturally quarrelsome disposition, was consequently always involving itself in some fight. In one of these fights he got his eye torn nearly out of his head, in fact, so that it hung merely by a bit of skin on his cheek. When his master perceived this he did not know what to do at first, so he got two or three brother officers together, myself included, and asked our advice. After a little deliberation we inspected the Dog's eye, and finally decided it should be taken out altogether. Now rose the question: Who was to undertake the operation, as the Dog's master said that he had not the heart to operate? At last we went to an officer of another regiment, who dabbled a little in veterinary surgery, and asked him to...
