Book Forward March

Download or read book Forward March written by Joe Ross and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-04-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born 1930 in the heart of the depression, Joe Ross was the sixth of seven children. His father died when he was three years old, leaving his mother with seven children, no insurance, and no means of support. The sole source of income came from his mother taking washing and ironing jobs for white families. The first of the family to graduate from high school, Joe was valedictorian of his senior class. He enlisted into a segregated US Army three days after graduation. Joe submitted numerous applications to attend military schools. He was denied these opportunities when a company commander said black soldiers didnt have the mental capacity to learn technical skills. After integration of the armed forces he re-applied for those technical schools and was accepted. The crowning moment came when Joe became an instructor at the United States Military Academy at West Point NY. He served honorably in the military with a 21-year career. Duty assignments included many stateside posts and overseas duties in Korea, Vietnam, Germany, Hawaii, and the Dominican Republic. His many military medals and awards include: Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and American Presidential Distinguished Unit Citation and the Purple Heart for a combat wound during the Korean War. After retirement, Joe was employed as Chief Cartographer for E.S. Preston Associates Inc. Columbus, Ohio. After one year, he became a member of the firms board of directors. Three years later, he was recruited and employed by the Keuffel and Esser Engineering Manufacturing Company. He held positions as Mapping Sales Engineer and Micrographics Systems Specialist for fourteen years and retired again in 1985. Joe was constantly involved in community and local civic activities. He served as a School Board of Education Vice President. In addition Joe was a Red Cross First Aid Instructor, Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad member, American Legion Baseball Coach, Little League Football Coach, and Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts of America. A father of seven children, Joe has been married to his wife Verlean for over fifty years. A portion of his memoirs from his Korean War experiences is on record at the Museum of African American History in Detroit, Michigan.

Book excerpt: Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger's election as Pope Benedict XVI brought a world-class biblical theologian to the papacy. There is an intensely biblical quality to his pastoral teaching and he has demonstrated a keen concern for the authentic interpretation of sacred Scripture. Here a foremost interpreter of Catholic thought and life offers a probing look at Benedict's biblical theology and provides a clear and concise introduction to his life and work. Bestselling author and theologian Scott Hahn argues that the heart of Benedict's theology is salvation history and the Bible and shows how Benedict accepts historical criticism but recognizes its limits. The author also explains how Benedict reads the overall narrative of Scripture and how he puts it to work in theology, liturgy, and Christian discipleship.

Book Forward March

Book excerpt: What’s worse? Someone using your face for catfishing or realizing you actually do have a crush on the catfished girl? Harper “Band Geek” McKinley just wants to make it through her senior year of marching band—and her Republican father’s presidential campaign. That was a tall order to start, but everything was going well enough until someone made a fake gay dating profile posing as Harper. The real Harper can’t afford for anyone to find out about the Tinder profile for three very important reasons: 1. Her mom is the school dean and dating profiles for students are strictly forbidden. 2. Harper doesn't even know if she likes anyone like that—let alone if she likes other girls. 3. If this secret gets out, her father could lose the election, one she's not sure she even wants him to win. But upon meeting Margot Blanchard, the drumline leader who swiped right, Harper thinks it might be worth the trouble to let Margot get to know the real her. With her dad’s campaign on the line, Harper’s relationship with her family at stake, and no idea who made that fake dating profile, Harper has to decide what’s more important to her: living her truth or becoming the First Daughter of America.

What he finds is a world as completely different from ours, as ours is different from when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. He encounters several new intelligent peoples whom he names: "The Amphibians," "The Killers," and "The Dwellers." THE AMPHIBIANS tied for 7th on the Arkham Survey of "Basic Science Fiction Titles" in 1949. It ranked 28th on the 1952 Astounding All-Time Poll for books. Although clearly influence by H.G. Wells' THE TIME MACHINE, it remains an intriguing and highly imaginative work. Originally published in 1925. This edition takes its text from the revised 1951 edition.

Book excerpt: In a unique world of seven nations, beautifully united by a common language but jealously separated by ideological rivalries, a powerful emperor uses diplomacy to overturn an age-old cultural legislation that bars inter-state marriage, to pave the way for his daughter to marry a handsome poor young man from an enemy state. While the scrapping of the cultural taboo is being resisted with intense protestations throughout the region, especially in Voberia, the emperor's own kingdom, a beautiful lady elsewhere, lies in wait to steal away the heart of the fine-looking poor man from the flamboyant princess. However, in the midst of the protestations, a world-shaking historical discovery changes the hearts of the Voberians and sways them to support the marriage, and even own it. What is this crucial historical discovery? And how does it change the socio-cultural topology of the entire region? Each and every plot in this hilarious, nail-biting politico-romantic thriller opens the eyes of the human heart, and sends you on a sentimental journey to discover the propelling forces of pure love.

Book excerpt: The China Relief Expedition, an eight-nation military effort, was organized to rescue foreign nationals in the country during the Boxer Uprising (1899–1901). In Thirteen Months in China, Thakur Gadadhar Singh, a British Indian soldier of the 7th Rajput Regiment, recounts his experiences as he set sail along with his men for Beijing in the summer of 1900. Written shortly after his return to India in 1901, he details several aspects of China and its people he met over the course of thirteen months. Part travelogue, part history, Singh’s eyewitness account offers a first-hand view of the tumultuous events of the Boxer Uprising and its aftermath, as also of Chinese society, culture, politics, religion, and art and architecture, often in a comparative perspective. It is a rare historical source of an Indian subaltern’s outlook on the history of China, and its customs and practices.
